The reading is free, and neither tickets nor reservations are required. The Witter Bynner Fellowships are funded by the Witter Bynner Foundation and given under the auspieces of the Library of Congress to support the writing of poetry. The fellows are chosen by the incumbent Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, and are asked to organize a local poetry reading in their communities, which they did last spring, and participate in a poetry reading at the Library of Congress, which is the October 16 event. Ms. Muske and Mr. Phillips last year became the first poets to receive the first Witter Bynner Fellowships to be conferred by the Library of Congress's Poetry and Literature Center. Ms. Muske is a poet, novelist, critic and professor at the University of Southern California. She is the author of six collections of poetry, including An Octave Above Thunder (1997), Red Trousseau (1993), Applause (1989) and Camouflage (1975); and two novels, Saving St. Germ (1989) and Dear Digby (1993). The recipient of fellowships and prizes from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Massachusetts Artists Foundation and the Academy of American Poets, Mr. Phillips is associate professor of English and of African and Afro-American Studies at Washington University, St. Louis, where he also directs the creative writing program. The Poetry and Literature Center, which administers the poetry series, is also the home of the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, a position that has existed since 1936, when the late philanthropist Archer M. Huntington endowed the Chair of Poetry at the Library of Congress. Archibald MacLeish, who was Librarian from 1939 to 1944, determined the Consultant in Poetry should be an annual appointment. Since then, many of the nation's most eminent poets have served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress and, after the passage of Public Law 99-194 in 1985, as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. The current Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, Robert Pinsky, is the award-winning translator of The Inferno of Dante and a creative writing professor at Boston University. He suggests authors to read in the literary series, plans other special events during the literary season, and usually introduces the programs. Interpreting services (American Sign Language, Contact Signing, Oral and/or Tactile) will be provided if requested five business days in advance of the event. The poem in my head goes something like this: Sunset and evening star/And one clear call for me! /O Captain my Captain!/Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers/I'm nobody! Who are you?

I spent a bit of last summer reading three anthologies-three collections of selected poems by "young American poets" (that is to say, poets born in 1960 or after), most (though not all) of whom have at least one published book of poems.

ON AUGUST 13, 1981,1 LEFT THE UFFIZI and walked through the crowds surrounding Michelangelo's
David ...
Arriving late to a dinner party a while back, my husband and I approached the dining room, where people were already seated. A woman rose up from her chair, pointed a finger at David and cried, "My God, you're the one who raped Edith Bunker!"...

Red Trousseau
by Carol Muske
Viking Penguin Carol Muske has been called one of the best poets of her generation. The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Carolyn Kizer, commented that her technical dazzle and virtuosity are "one of a kind: Mozartian." The poems in her new collection, Red Trousseau , use Los Angeles as a symbol for the seduction of appearances; in the title poem, reality crosses from the Wallace Stevens notion of the sun "hovering in its guise of impatient tribunal" to a director's reshooting of a tarnished sunset, so that "the scene, infinite, rebegins." In Carol Muske's work, red, blue, and yellow dominate, serving to link such disparate things as a soundstage's fake prie dieu, a precinct station map of gang activity, and a schoolgirl's model of the planets, all of which take on the red of Salem burnings, the self-immolation of a political dissident in Prague, and Eros itself, moving like a red shadow over the body of love. In Memoriam
By Carol Muske
Posted Thursday, August 21, 1997, at 12:30 AM PT
We bought Amish quilts
in Kalona. Or, I bought two.
You hung back, approving, but disinclined by nature to purchase cotton and twill oddments, stars and hexagons. Yet you did. And paid with a rare optimism: a love poem. It turns out I was the one who did not believe. When an ecstatic life is taken apart then re-stitched in increments, it comes to resemble bad faith, a set of troubled assumptions. My daughter sleeps under mine. And you, who are nowhere now but in the charged air, you saw it first, pointed out to me in love the one bright yellow square, uncanny, unfaded in the dim one hundred-year-old field. Carol Muske (Carol Muske Dukes in fiction) has two new books appearing this year Women and Poetry: Truth, Autobiography, and the Shape of the Self ; and An Octave Above Thunder: New and Selected Poems , due in October.

The Queen of Tragedy
—after Catullus
By Carol Muske-Dukes

Listen
to Carol Muske-Dukes reading this poem.
Here she comes, the Queen of Tragedy, dragging her train of black feathers … Grieving publicly, grieving at the great communal well. Tears, tears everywhere! But Catullus' lover lost her pet sparrow and that small moment fit grief perfectly. The Latin: pipiebat —uncanny the precise sound of the tiny bold piping—heard no more. In her lap or at her breast, Her sparrow lifting like that my sorrow cheeping all the time, hopping from one shoulder to another … pipiebat, little incident. Yes, in all the translations, it is a small bird it is a needless act . This is what makes me want to talk to you tonight, Catullus. You, tagging the off-white walls with immortal graffiti—making Lesbia's tears also eternal.

Boyd was just a step away from becoming an obstetrician-gynecologist when her career was derailed by two people: the charming, wealthy, and mercurial Russell and a mother of three who died while intern Boyd performed an abortion. Her death is not BoydÂ’s fault, but it prompts her to abandon her career and marry Russell, with whom she has a daughter, Freddy. Her life would be idyllic, except for the regret and the anger. One night Russell so enrages Boyd that she tells him to die, and he does. Boyd goes into shock: more guilt, another ghost. Meanwhile her elegant mother-in-law has her own transgressions to cope with, and four-year-old Freddy convinces herself that she can liberate her daddy from his underground abode. Boyd finds herself drawn to Will, who gave up his dream of being an architect to run his familyÂ’s St. Paul mortuary and who is also haunted by his dead. These are the parameters within which Muske-Dukes, an astute and poetic novelist, works her magic. As in Saving St. Germ
