I was born on June 11, 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I grew up in a family of 9 kids. At least, that is where I lived when I was young. My mother says I never grew up and still act like I was 6 years old. She may be right, but I figure that I act like a very mature 6 year old. I almost flunked first grade and also the second, third, forth, and fifth; but my younger brother was in the grade behind me and he was a brain and nobody wanted to have me be in the same grade as him, so they kept passing me. I never learned how to spell, graduated from eighth grade counting on my fingers to do simple addition, and in general was not a resounding academic success. I did, however, all through elementary school, write poetry. Funny poems, silly poems, all sorts of poems. Nobody thought that was very important, including me. When I went to high school, I didn't get along with anybody, read lots of books and deciding to be a Catholic Priest. I studied for 7 years to be a Jesuit priest, only to find that I was lousy priest material. [While I was studying with the Jesuits, I got an undergraduate degree in History and a Master's degree in Anthropology. A Master's degree in Anthropology isn't worth much, but that's what they give you when you flunk your orals for your Ph.D]

Robert Munsch
Robert Munsch lives in Guelph, Ontario in Canada. He loves to tell stories and most of his books start out as stories that he makes up to tell children. You can tell by his stories that he loves to make kids laugh. He travels a great deal telling stories to kids as he goes.
Here is his great web site! I love the poems!
Robert Munsch's stories have strong-willed, quick-thinking kids as characters. The stories are also usually based on outrageous ideas. (Like a little a six-year-old lost at the airport who ends up flying an airplane.)
Can you think of a wild and crazy, unbelievable thing for a kid your age to do and then make it into a story? This will take some planning.
It is very cold in Canada with lots of snow. (Hey, I'm from Phoenix and this impresses me!) Several of my favorite Munsch stories involve snow and snowsuits and stuff I've never known. Here are some fun snow sites on the Web.

ROBERT MUNSCH Robert Munsch likes to use kids he meets on his storytelling adventures across Canada and the U.S. in his books. Ribbon Rescue was inspired by Jillian, a Mohawk girl from the Kahnawake reserve outside of Montreal, who went to hear a storytelling wearing a traditional ribbon dress. We Share Everything! is about Amanda and Jeremiah, whom he met in Pontiac, Michigan. Bob and his wife live in Guelph with their three children - each of whom has appeared in various Munsch stories - and their dog, Cinder. Bob spends most of his time writing, and likes to devote his spare time to making school visits and telling stories. His books for Scholastic include Alligator Baby Andrew's Loose Tooth Get Out of Bed!

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MUNSCH Robert Munsch is Canada's best-selling author! With over 27 titles in print, he knows what appeals to kids. "I got it backwards!" is Munsch's reply to questions about how he became a children's author. That's because he makes up most of his stories on the spot, and tells them over and over before he writes them down. Munsch is bursting with ideas though he says it sometimes takes him years to get a good story.
Every year, Munsch receives thousands of letters from young fans. He likes to meet the children who send him mail, which sometimes leads to another story. Of his hectic touring schedule, he says simply, "I love it! One of the nicest things about my job is travelling and meeting all kinds of people."
Robert Munsch studied to be a Jesuit priest, but then decided to work with children instead. For the next five years he taught in a variety of nursery schools and daycare centres while he earned an M.A. in Early Childhood Education.

Autobiographical sketch written for the Eighth Book of Junior Authors and Illustrators, 2000: "I was born on June 11, 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the fourth of nine children. I was in the middle; a very bad position as it meant I was attacked by both the younger coalition and the older coalition. I did badly in elementary schooldaydreamed all the time, never learned how to spell, graduated from eighth grade counting on my fingers to do simple addition. "I did, however, all through elementary school, write poetry. Funny poems, silly poems, all sorts of poems. Nobody thought that was very important. When I went to a Catholic High school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I didn't get along with anybody, read lots of books and decided to be a Catholic priest. "I studied for seven years to be a Jesuit priest and finally gave that up. While I was studying with the Jesuits, I worked part-time at an orphanage to escape from deadly classes in philosophy. So I knew I liked working with kids; and when I left the Jesuits I decided to work in daycare for a year till I figured out what I wanted to do. What I figured out I wanted to do was to work in daycare. "After I had been in daycare for a while I decided to learn something about what I was supposed to be doing, so I went back to school for a year at the Elliot Pearson School of Child Studies at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. It was there that I made up my first story while on a student teaching placement at the Wellesley College Child Studies Preschool. I did it for a circle time. I did not know that it was going to be a book called Mortimer. It took it twelve years to get to be a book.
