2002 - Div. 4 League
Division 4 League Title
Ballyskenagh 1-8 ...... Killavilla 1-6 Ballyskenagh captured the Division 4 League title at the expense of Killavilla in Shinrone on Sunday 17th November. A good first half perfomance saw 'Skenagh build up a 1-5 to 0-2 lead by half time, but Killavilla fought back in the second half and scored three points without reply in the opening five minutes (two from frees) to narrow the gap to just three points. With five minutes to go, the gap was again five points, but a Killavilla goal at the end of normal time ensured an exciting finish, with 'Skenagh holding on to win by 1-8 to 1-6. Accepting the Shield from County Board Vice Chairman, Mick Murphy, Captain Denis Egan thanked all involved with the success before giving three cheers to Killavilla. Team and Scorers: Denis Egan (Capt); Olly Ryan, Philip Shanahan, Brian Keeshan; Alan Middleton, Pat Donnelly, Timmy Hennessy; Ronan Middleton, Derek Middleton; Tadgh Maher (0-1), Joey Murphy, Eoghan Franks (0-3); Padraic Kennedy, John Dooley, Kenny Franks (1-4 1-2 frees).

SIXTH ANNUAL BSA LECTURE - BUILDING SOCIETIES
URGED TO "RETURN TO RADICALISM " EXTRACT FROM SPEECH BY PHILIP MIDDLETON
Delivering the sixth annual Building Societies Association Lecture Philip Middleton, Head of Retail Banking at Ernst and Young, said that conditions were ideal for a resurgence of the strengths of mutually owned financial institutions in delivering "first class financial services rooted in social value rather than profit maximisation." However, the ability of the UK's 65 building societies to capitalise on the potential of one of the most exciting periods in their history could be hamstrung by a combination of inherent conservatism and over zealous regulation. Regulation The future of many smaller societies could be under threat under the weight of intensifying competition, narrowing margins and the growing impact of risk based regulation. It is clear that the regulatory burden is increasing. Mr Middleton said "regulators - not just the FSA, but also the Banking Code Standards Board and the Financial Ombudsman Service (in so far as it has a regulatory role) - will need to have regard to their commitment to proportionate regulation if the costs and complexity of regulation are not to prove untenable for many smaller building societies." Addressing 120 senior executives of mutually owned financial institutions, Mr Middleton said that research to be published by Ernst & Young in November would confirm that conditions in UK financial services markets were fertile ground for the success of institutions founded on ideals of fairness, transparency, membership value and the supremacy of community over shareholder interests. "The debate about whether mutual financial instutions have a role - which raged in the mid nineties - has largely been won" he asserted, whilst noting that there would still be a need to fend off the attentions of mercenary carpetbaggers. There is a significant role for building societies and other mutuals in such fields as community-based financial services, long-term savings, charitable work and tackling financial exclusion, as well as in providing a dynamic and competitive alternative to proprietary institutions.

Philip Massinger Although Philip Massinger will never be estimated above the second rank of Elizabethan playwrights, he is becoming more and more admired by modern readers and critics because of his qualities of simplicity, saneness, and dramatic (rather than lyrical) effectiveness. He belongs to the third and last generation of Elizabethan writers for the stage, since he was born in 1584, established his contacts with the theater just as Shakespeare was beginning to bring his work to an end and as Beaumont and Fletcher were producing their most famous plays, and died in 1640, just before the closing of the theaters by the Puritans. Massinger's birth into a family of education, his early patronage by the Pembrokes, and his partial education at Oxford, all started his career under favourable auspices. When he left college for London without a degree, probably about 1606, he seems to have gradually won for himself the confidence of such men as Field, Tourneur, Dekker , and Fletcher, with all of whom he eventually collaborated. His work with Fletcher from 1613 to 1623 for the King's Men has given his own friends and contemporaries, such as Sir Aston Cockayne, as well as many later scholars, plenty of opportunities to claim for him large portions of plays generally attributed to the more famous member of the intimate partnership which succeeded that of Beaumont and Fletcher on the retirement and death of the former. With the exception of 1623 to 1625, when for some unknown reason Massinger transferred his talents to the Queen's Men, his characters were created for the King's Men during the remaining years of his life. But, although he wrote many plays, both alone and in collaboration with other dramatists, he was never prosperous, and is known to have borrowed money at least once from old Philip Henslowe.

Mark David Middleton, 20, known by friends and family as David, died Thursday in a car accident in Evanston. Mr. Middleton was preparing to attend Columbia College in Chicago in February to study writing, said his mother, Susan Hydrick Middleton. She said her son recently had considered a career as a journalist. Middleton said her son loved music and movies and had played a role in a community performance of "the Music Man" in 1966. Mr. Middleton played four years on the Evanston Township High School football team before graduating in 1996. He often sailed with his father. Mr. Middleton, who lived in Evanston, was active in his community as an altar boy and Sunday school teacher at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. He also was a lifeguard at Evanston beaches and a Boy Scout camp counselor. "He was just a really good kid," his mother said. "He had a really good sense of humor. He is going to be really missed." In addition to his mother, survivors of Mr. Middleton include his father Mark; two brothers, Christopher and Philip; his stepmother, Paula A. Massey; and his grandparents, Dr. Robert and Mary Hydrick, and Glenn and Lois Middleton.

    Listen to
    the interview with Philip Middleton
Dresdner Bank, Germany's third biggest, yet again has failed to pull off a merger with one of its local competitors. The four-week-old merger talks with the country's fourth biggest bank, Commerbank, have been abandoned, barely months after Dresdner and Deutschebank called of merger talks. The failure leaves a bad taste with European bankers. Germany is notoriously over-banked and senior bankers have been trying to do something about it, such as the attempted deal between Commerzbank and Dresdner. Our reporter Rodney Smith discussed this with the European head of financial services strategy at accountants KPMG, Philip Middleton: "There never seemed to be a great deal of enthusiasm behind this purported merger, and indeed it looked as though there were two unwilling individuals being dragged to the alter with a shot gun in their back, so no real great surprise that it has fallen apart."

    Danny Middleton
Danny Middleton is the Children's Librarian from Broadwalk Library in Salford. Danny has been nominated as a Reading Champion by Wendy Hilton from the library, and also by Amelia Foster from the National Literacy Trust.
Wendy writes: "Danny is always extremely enthusiastic and full of innovative ideas. He has transformed the image and ethos of children's library work in this difficult inner city area."
Amelia writes: " Danny runs a very successful All Books For Children scheme, helping to promote reading to local pre-school children and their families, and works very hard to make the library a place in which local children and teenagers feel comfortable. He knows all the children and teenagers by name, and is an excellent role model." Q: What do you get out of helping children with their reading?
A: "I work in a regeneration area in Salford. The main challenge has been to change children's views of the library and what it has to offer. It is now busy most evenings." Q: How did you get involved with helping children with their reading?
