Walter de la Mare
Sir Walter John de la Mare was born on April 25, 1873, in Charlton, Kent, England. He wrote numerous novels, essays, plays, poems and stories, and also worked as a critic and editor. He is today mostly remembered for his stories and a single novel dealing with the supernatural. His first book, Songs of Childhood , was written under the pseudonym of Walter Ramal and published in 1902, while he was employed by an oil company. He was quite successful as an author while he lived, but apart from a few poems and his supernatural fiction, he is not often reprinted today. One of his most popular novels, Memoirs of a Midget , details the often bizarre experiences of a freak named Fanny Bowater; his supernatural collections include, among others, The Connoiseur and Other Stories On the Edge The Riddle and Other Tales , and the novel The Return . He died on June 22, 1956, and lies buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. Upon his death, the noted fantasy author Lord Dunsany wrote a poem reproduced below. It was read by the Dean of St. Paul's at de la Mare's burial on Thursday, June 28, 1956. "In St. Paul's Cathedral", by Lord Dunsany.

de la Mare, Walter
25 April 1873 - 22 June 1956
English writer of plays, stories, novels, essays, poems, and criticism, De La Mare is remembered today primarily for his supernaturalist works, although he doesn't seem to be much remembered, or much read, even in that regard. Some of that may be due to two factors: (1) De La Mare can be hard to read. Although a fairly gifted prose stylist, his style is, to put it mildly, elliptical at times, and he relies rather heavily on words and phrases, many of them colloquial, that will not be familiar to most readers today, esp. American readers. (2) Even once you've figured out what he's saying, De La Mare can be hard to make sense of. His works are often thematically indirect; he comes out and directly says very little; there is much abiguity and (deliberate) vagueness, leaving much of the "theme" up to the reader to determine. This demand placed upon the reader makes him unlikely to be widely read. Occasional pseudonym Walter Ramal.

Walter de la Mare
The Listeners
Knocking on the moonlit door;
And a bird flew up out of the turret,
And he smote upon the door again a second time;
But no one descended to the Traveller;
No head from the leaf-fringed sill
But only a host of phantom listeners
That dwelt in the lone house then
Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight
To that voice from the world of men:
Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair,
That goes down to the empty hall, And he felt in his heart their strangeness, Their stillness answering his cry, While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf, For he suddenly smote on the door, even Never the least stir made the listeners, Though every word he spake Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house From the one man left awake: Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup, And the sound of iron on stone, And how the silence surged softly backward, When the plunging hoofs were gone.
