Post-Colonial Themes in David Malouf's Remembering Babylon
This page last revised 27 May 1997 NOTE: Much of the material used on this page is taken from a conversation with David Malouf in Dublin, 19 April 1997. It is interesting to note that, although in the context of this MA course we are studying Malouf's novel in terms of a post-colonial response, the author himself has expressed the opinion that it is not, strictly speaking, a post-colonial text. Most would agree with Malouf in that it is certainly not an example of resistance or response from a member of a colonised community in the same vein as, for example, Chinua Achebe or some Native Canadian authors. Rather, it can be seen as an examination of the colonial project by a descendant of the original colonisers. Nevertheless, there are several themes running through the novel which constitute elements of post-colonial discourse, and this page intends to briefly examine some of them. There is a pervasive sense of colonial guilt throughout Remembering Babylon , an awareness of the suspect morality of the colonial process. Like

DAVID MALOUF Do not shoot...I'm a B-b-british object!

QUILL: Queensland Branch's Newsletter
The Gateway: David Malouf at Thuringowa Library
Following an approach by Random House Australia in late February, Thuringowa Library was delighted to host one of a number of tours to regional centres by David Malouf, considered to be a writer of international as well as national stature. We decided to make the evening as accessible as possible and so made no charge at the door. Thuringowa Council provided the promotion, space and refreshments for this very important event. What an evening for the more than 130 people who squeezed into Pinnacles Gallery! Dr Elizabeth Perkins, adjunct professor at James Cook University provided a brief overview of David's writing career, during which time she has interviewed him for some distinguished journals. David then read from some of his work, including 12 Edmonstone Street , and Dream Stuff , the short story collection which was the object and subject of this tour. Malouf's strengths include his wonderful ability to evoke a time, a place, a consciousness which is peculiarly Queensland in character he mentioned in a radio interview on ABC 4QN that he considered Queensland quite "exotic" with a history and character which was sometimes subsumed under the 'conservative' label. David's evocations of childhoods past, and in particular his reading of

David Malouf. Dream Stuff Vintage, 2000. Dream Stuff is a collection of nine new short stories by Queensland's finest literary export David Malouf. In his lengthy writing career, Malouf has turned his hand to short stories, poetry, novels and three opera libretti. This short story collection contains more of what he does so well: tender portraits of people, depictions of the subtle nuances of affection and distances between them, and the wistful nostalgia that is his trademark. Although these stories largely explore domestic and personal realms, the reader is always made conscious of his characters' connection to some deeper, universal current of existence.
The title of the collection comes from a story of the same name and refers to the marijuana ('the green stuff, the dream stuff') harvested in remote bushland in a story written within this story by the main character, a writer. Most of the stories contain a dream of some sort, sometimes a dream for the future, more often the nocturnal variety. This is risky, as reading about the dreams of fictional people can often be as dull as listening to those of people you know, but Malouf always handles this device with dexterity, the result being that the dreams of these characters are closer to the reader's own in their impact.

'At Schindler's is not the only story with parallels to his novels. Malouf has said that many of the stories in this collection were begun as long as fifteen years ago, and several draw on the same imaginative landscape as his novels. The story 'Blacksoil Country', which looks at race relations in the early days of colonialism, has echoes of the Booker Prize shortlisted Remembering Babylon . A white farmer mistakenly murders an Aboriginal man who had been bringing him a gift, and the local Aboriginal people retaliate by killing his twelve-year-old son. Unusually, the boy is the narrator, and he continues to tell the story of his father's brutal revenge on the local Aboriginal people after his death. It appears that we are being spoken to not by a child, as we had been led to believe, but by a 150-year-old ghost. Given the stark realism of most of Malouf's writing in this volume, this device is unusual, but all the more interesting for that.
