R. A. MacAvoy (1949- )
R. A. MacAvoy writes wonderful science fiction and fantasy novels. Her stories are full of interesting and original twists and turns (for example, you can't be certain that the main character will not die - several times, in one case...), and she treats her characters with respect. She has written in quite a few different styles, which vary between each series of novels that she's done, but her style is always neat, realistically characterised, and completely enthralling. "I like to write. Language and character interest me. Plot does not, but I understand I'd better have one if anyone's to read my book." From Contemporary Authors, vol 113 Some of R. A. MacAvoy's wonderful books are now back in print with the publisher "E-Rights/E-Reads Ltd" in print and e-format - available through Amazon.com I have set up "Amazon Associate" links to Tea Twisting the Rope , and The Grey Horse from the Bibliography page - if we're really lucky there might be others republished.

Biography:
Roberta Ann MacAvoy lives in Scotts Valley, Northern California. Her surname is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable: MACavoy. I assume that she calls herself Bertie MacAvoy in real life, as that is the appellation I've seen name-dropped around the Internet.

WELCOME JUMP EXPLORE THE POINT ... HOME DAMIANO by R.A. MacAvoy (Review by Jane Beaumont , Cape Town, South Africa) Roberta MacAvoy writes with a Renaissance paintbrush. Take this... "The road slipped east; it rolled up and down. Damiano rode through a silence of trees. In a birch-covered valley the sky above him was filigreed with bare branches. Dead leaves, sodden after the autumn's rains, padded the horse's hooves like cloth wrappings. The sun and the trees wove a pattern of warm lace over Damiano's head. He nodded sleepily with every step, as did Festelligambe. Macchiata had nothing to say; she spent the day in her nose." Damiano is the young son of a great witch, his own powers under-extended as yet; Festelligambe (sticklegs) is his horse; Macchiata (spotty) is his beloved talking dog. Together they traverse the northern Italy of the 15th century on - of course - a quest. But the quest is as unusual as its protagonists and the characters encountered along the way seem to spring from some brightly coloured and lavishly gilded Book of Hours and include not only Satan himself but also his brother Raphael, archangel and lute tutor to Damiano. MacAvoy evokes mood magnificently but she is perhaps best at the spirit of place - the iron harshness of Tuscany in wintertime, Piedmont in perpetual summer bloom, the arid bitterness of Satan's palace. Her characters stay imprinted on the retina long after the book is finished and some, Raphael and Macchiata for me, find a permanent shelf in the memory file.

After slogging through the next thousand pages of from Robert Jordan , it was an intense relief to turn to the latest trilogy by R. A. MacAvoy. Sometimes I get really bored with a lot of magical pyrotechnics-you know, where Our Hero rounds the corner, confidently bearing his Staff of Infinite Smiting, but oh no, it's a three-hundred-foot tall Ballhog wielding the Shield of Endless Dispersal, and his smiting attacks bounce right off! Ho hum. Well, if you want people stories, try R. A. MacAvoy. Technically, they are fantasy, but the fantastic elements are subtle when they show at all. Sometimes living characters will converse with the dead-but ghosts crop up in mainstream fiction, too, and no one banishes those
  • Tea with the Black Dragon was the work that made her name in the field. A sort of hi-tech whodunit in the context of a group of contemporary semi-pro traditional musicians. One of the characters might be a legendary Chinese dragon, but maybe not. Decide for yourself. I also loved the sequel, Twisting the Rope
  • A Trio for Lute is a trilogy that was also published separately as Damiano Damiano's Lute , and Raphael . The period is early Renaissance and the protagonist is a musician from Italy who travels across Europe in the time of the Black Death and encounters other musics from as far away as Ireland. I love the scene where Damiano commits a grievous breach of etiquette by climbing a fence to get into a private yard because he has never heard an Irish harp and just has to meet the player. The emotions and events of this work are so intense that they remind me of the work of

T he novels written by Roberta Ann MacAvoy are simply beautiful. Rather than read them, you fall into them. Like getting into a hot bath at the end of a hard day. The characters she creates are eccentric and well rendered. Her style is heavy on dialogue, but it uses very natural patterns.
With each book she gets better and better. You must read " Tea with a Black Dragon ". It's a wonderful love story. Oh, and don't miss the "Lens of the world" series either. It's a coming of age story that is perfectly shaped for the fantasy world.

Tea with the Black Dragon
by R.A. MacAvoy
Review by Eva Wojcik-Obert This book is available for download at Fictionwise Ahhhhh, who among you knows the sweetness of revisiting a book you’ve read three times, once every four or five years and still find it satisfying each time? We’ve all got our favorites, and R. A. MacAvoy’s Tea with the Black Dragon is mine. It’s not a big, long involved novel with a huge cast. It’s a slight, rather zennish fantasy book about a woman searching for her daughter and a man searching for truth and all the things that are Oolong. Oh and I must warn all you cynics that it’s also a love story. NOT a romance, a love story. Martha Macnamara and Mayland Long are way too classy for a trashy romance novel. By the way, the wonder of computer science in the early nineteen eighties plays a vital role in this gem. So you get some fantasy, some Zen, and some computer science all rolled into a book you can read in one evening. Oh and James Bond has nothing on Mayland Long when it comes to facing off with the bad guys. Mayland doesn’t even need any fancy gadgets for fun just some unusual fingers.

Well thought out tale of time travel to ancient Ireland

Similar in context to the Dragonfly in Amber series, this tale involves time travel from modern Ireland to 10th centery Ireland. Review: Tea with the Black Dragon , R. A. MacAvoy
This lovely, unusual contemporary fantasy is unfortunately out of print. The eponymous dragon is Mayland Long; he has tea with Martha Macnamara, who has just checked into the hotel he lives at. Mr. Long is seeking, "among other things," truth; Martha is seeking her missing daughter Liz, whose urgent phone call summoned her to California. From there follows a love story, ruminations on the nature of humanity, and forays into computer science, all tied together by Liz's mysterious predicament. MacAvoy writes cleverly and compactly, mixing Chinese imperial dragons and speech-controlled toy cars with ease and grace. This is a thoroughly charming and enjoyable book. She wondered what sprite had tempted her to hoof it from the lobby to the seventh floor, where Mayland Long resided. Surely it was not the spirit of physical fitness. Health trailed along in Martha Macnamara's wake; she had never turned to pursue it. She snorted as she recognized her motive. She was visiting a man's rooms alone, and so had unconsciously avoided observation. What an absurd right hemisphere you have, she railed at herself. Nasty half-brain. Sneaky and absurd . . . . Serve it right to climb the rest of the way. She stood at the top. "There," she mumbled to herself. "See what you made me do?"
