Like many of Lowry's publications, the novel is highly autobiographical. Lowry spent his post- Volcano years drinking and planning a cycle of novels built around his masterwork. He lived from 1940 until 1954 in a primitive cabin in Dollarton, British Columbia, and from 1954 until his death in Italy and then England. I wrote: in the dark cavern of our birth. The printer had it tavern, which seems better: But herein lies the subject of our mirth, Since on the next page death appears and dearth. So it may be that God's word was distraction, Which to our strange type appears destruction, Which is bitter. His grandfather from his mother's side was a Norwegian sea captain. Like his three brothers, he attended public boarding schools. Lowry was educated at Caldicote School, Hertfordshire, and at the Leys school, Cambridge. At the age of fifteen he won a championship in golf in junior series. Rebelling against his bourgeois upbringing, Lowry interrupted his academic studies. He went to sea to work as a deckhand on a freighter bound for China and on a ship sailing to Oslo. One of Lowry's affairs in Norway was to meet the writer

Malcolm Lowry Biography , Works Lowry was born on July 28, 1909 in Chesire, England. From 1915-1923 Malcolm went to Braeside School and Caldocote School. From 1923-1927 he went to the Leys School in Cambridge. From May to October he sailed to the Far East as a cabin boy aboard the S.S. Pyrrhus From April to September of 1929 Malcolm studied under the American poet and novelist, Conrad Aiken, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He entered St. Catherine's College, Cambridge University, in England. In 1930 he traveled to Norway to meet novelist Nordahl Grieg. In 1932 he graduated from Cambridge with a B.A. in English. In 1933 Jonathan Cape published Lowry's first novel, Ultramarine In 1935 he spent ten days in the psychiatric wing of Bellevue Hospital in New York. In November of 1936 in Cuernavaca, Mexico, Malcolm began writing Under the Volcano. Jan Gabrial, his wife, left him at this time as well. In 1939 he met Margerie Bonner. He went to Vancouver and British Columbia where he was joined by Margerie. In August of 1940 Lowry and Margerie moved to a squatter's shack in Dollarton near Vancouver. His divorce from Jan was finalized and he married Margerie on December 2nd.
