Lewis, Wyndham: The Caliph's Design. Architects! Where is your Vortex?. London:The Egoist Ltd. 1919 (Santa Barbara:Black Sparrow Press 1986). Lewis Design:1919 THE PARABLE OF THE CALIPH'S DESIGN Mahmud and Hasan bent over the design, and, noticing that their lord's eye was dancing, they indulged in a few hurried guffaws, scraping their feet and pushing each other. The Caliph then said, "Oh, Mahmud and Hasan, that is a very funny design. But it is my will that such a street should rise beneath the windows of my palace, work starting on it at ten o'clock to-morrow morning. It is your unpleasant duty to invent the shapes and conditions that would make it possible to realise my design. You have till ten to-morrow morning in which to produce the requisite plans and instructions for such a work. Should you fail to do so your heads will fall as soon as I have been informed of your failure, that is to say, between ten and eleven to-morrow. Good-right, oh Mahmud and Hasan." Those two tremendously able men burst into a cold sweat. Their eyes protruded from their intelligent faces. They clicked their tongues, shrugged their shoulders, and shuffled out with gestures of despair. After a halfhour of complete paralysis of their brilliant faculties, they pulled themselves together, and by ten o'clock next morning a series of the most beautiful plans that had yet been made in Baghdad (retaining with an exact fidelity the masses and directions of the potentate's design) were ready for their master. And within a month a strange street transfigured the heart of that cultivated city.

Chapter One
Inferior Religions
`A primitive soul, trying to get back to his element'
Like the other Modernists, Lewis was something of an outsider to British cultural traditions when he returned to London in late 1908, but through his quasi-discipleship to Augustus John and William Rothenstein, and through friendship with Spencer Gore and Harold Gilman, he was positioned at the centre of artistic innovation in pre-war London. Through Thomas Sturge Moore and a circle of British Museum scholars such as Laurence Binyon and R. A. Streatfeild, he was given an understanding of Oriental art and the English Romantic tradition deriving from Blake. He was introduced to Yeats, but modelled his own poetic style on Samuel Butler (Streatfeild was Butler's literary executor, and edited The Way of All Flesh for publication). Moore thought Lewis showed promise as a poet, on the strength of the impenetrably abstract and convoluted sonnets in which the young man attempted to expound the metaphysical paradoxes behind life:

Doubt's Universal empire doth but show God fears a certain Anarchy of Woe. (RA 129)

    Who's Who: Percy Wyndham Lewis
Updated - Sunday, 21 July, 2002 Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) served as an official British artist during the First World War in addition to serving as a battery officer. Born in Nova Scotia in 1882 Lewis was educated in England at the renowned Rugby School. Thereafter accepted into Slade School of Art in 1898 Lewis graduated in 1901 and embarked upon a tour of Europe, eventually returning to England in 1909. Lewis established a reputation as a man of parts: aside from his undoubted talent as an artist he published essays, plays and novels, and came to be regarded as a satirist. In 1912 Lewis founded Vorticism, a new literary and artistic movement of sharp angles and bold lines which went out of its way to reject the 'irrelevant' romanticism of the nineteenth century, instead stressing qualities such as violence and energy together with the increasing importance of mechanical machines in the modern world. Supporters of his group included another artist who would serve in an official capacity during wartime, Christopher Nevinson Lewis's First World War service included two years spent on the Western Front as a battery officer from 1916-18. In 1937 he published his wartime memoirs as
