Hanif Kureishi
Writer England Born 5 Dec 1954
Hanif Kureishi was born in Bromley, South London in 1954. His mother is English, his father Pakistani and the rest of his family live in Karachi. He started writing when he was 12, but also hoped to be a professional cricketer. His other abiding interest is jazz. He studied Philosophy at King's College, London.
Hanif Kureishi's career as a playwright first received encouragement from Peter Gill and David Gothard when he was working as a typist at the Riverside Studios. He won the Thames Television Playwright Award in 1980 for his first full-length play 'The Mother Country', and in the following year became writer-in-residence at the Royal Court. His credits in the theatre include 'Birds of Passage' at Hampstead, 'Outskirts' for the RSC, 'Borderline' which was produced at the Royal Court, and adaptations of Kafka for BBC Radio 3 and of Brecht's 'Mother Courage' which starred Judi Dench for the RSC.
Hanif Kureishi's screenplay 'Sammy and Rosie Get Laid' includes his diary's record of the film's making. The diary chronicles the collaboration of writer and director, Stephen Frears, over the production of the film, from which they emerge as a powerful team. 'London Kills Me' is the most recent film written and directed by Kureishi, and was premiered at the 1991 London Film Festival.
Hanif Kureishi's published fiction includes stories in Granta, American Harpers, The London Review of Books and The Atlantic. Hanif Kureishi writes regularly for the New Statesman and Society. His first novel, 'The Buddha of Suburbia', was published in 1990 to wide acclaim and won the Whitbread Best First Novel Award. His television adaptation was broadcast by the BBC in 1993 and received great critical acclaim. Kureishi's second novel, 'The Black Album' was published by Faber and Faber in March 1995. Kureishi co-edited 'The Faber Book of Pop' with Jon Savage in 1995.

A successful screenwriter ( My Beautiful Laundrette ) and the author of the critically acclaimed Buddha of Suburbia (1990), Kureishi offers 10 short stories delineating fractious relationships, often among Pakistani immigrants living in London. Repeatedly reworking the theme of love turned sour, he moves from the slightly surreal (e.g., the insect infestation that ritually occurs during the seventh year of marriage in "The Flies") to the grimly realistic (a cuckolded man gets his revenge by sleeping with the daughter of his wife's lover in "D'accord, Baby"). In "My Son, the Fanatic," it's the relationship between a Pakistani father and his son that turns hostile when the cabdriver father, who's sacrificed everything to send his son to the best schools, discovers that his son has become a religious fanatic. Despite his somewhat cerebral take on these issues, Kureishi manages to work up a great deal of empathy for his characters, as he conjures them in midlife, weighted down with responsibility and struggling with long-term relationships. Joanne Wilkinson (Booklist/November 1, 1997)

HANIF KUREISHI
"The good thing about writing is that you don't have to have a final point of view, that you can try out different ways of seeing, or different selves." Birthplace

Education

Theatre usher
Did you know? He supported himself by writing pornography as Antonia French. Critical verdict It was theatre that launched Kureishi; his early plays The Mother Country and Borderline are well worth seeing. Critically acclaimed for The Buddha of Suburbia (which won a Whitbread), The Black Album, which tackled Islamic fundamentalism and the sense of belonging among young British Asians, was less polished but more ambitious - Kureishi wrote it as a response to the Satanic Verses affair, to find out "why they wanted to kill my friend". His recent work has concentrated on the personal, with Intimacy and Love in a Blue Time focusing on mid-life male selfishness and the 1999 play Sleep With Me exploring the incestuous emotional lives of a group of friends. The perceived closeness of Intimacy to his life, and its uncomfortable subject matter - a bored father and husband turns his back on his family - lost him many cred points, while critics also complained that his brisk, vibrant style was descending into sketchy caricature.

http://www.mardou.de/beat/wkureishi.htm

KUREISHI, HANIF British Director Hanif Kureishi, an Anglo-Pakistani writer, is best known to international audiences as the screenwriter of My Beautiful Laundrette , one of the greatest international successes of British television's Channel Four. Born in London of an English mother and a Pakistani father, Kureishi documents the population of that city's marginsan underclass of disenfranchised youth, immigrants from former British colonies, leftist intellectuals, sexual outlaws (gays, lesbians, and heterosexuals refusing serial monogamy), and those individuals who cross class, ethnic, and sexual boundaries. His stories are often set in the Notting Hill district, a London neighborhood the center of the country's most violent racial unrest. Notting Hill is also the home of film and television director, Stephen Frears, with whom Kureishi collaborated on two projects for Channel Four's Film on Four, Laundrette and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid.
