King Stephen (1135-54 AD)
Born: c.1096
Died: Parents: Stephen, Count of Blois, and Adela (daughter of William the Conqueror) Significant Siblings: Henry (Bishop of Winchester) Spouse: Matilda of Boulogne Significant Offspring: Eustace, Mary, William Contemporaries: Matilda (daughter of Henry I); Robert, Earl of Gloucester (illegitimate son of Henry I); Geoffrey of Anjou Stephen was the grandson of William the Conqueror and about half-dozen years older than his cousin and rival for the throne, Matilda (daughter of Henry I). After his father's death in 1102, Stephen was raised by his uncle, Henry I. Henry was genuinely fond of Stephen, and granted his nephew estates on both sides of the English Channel. By 1130, Stephen was the richest man in England and Normandy. Stephen's reign was one of the darkest chapters in English history. He was basically a good man - well respected by the barons and closely tied to the church - but possessed a conciliatory character and limited scope of kingship. Stephen had promised to recognize his cousin Matilda as lawful heir, but like many of the English/Norman nobles, was unwilling to yield the crown to a woman. He received recognition as king by the papacy through the machinations of his brother Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, and gathered support from the barons. Matilda was in Anjou at the time of Henry's death and Stephen, in a rare exhibition of resolve, crossed the Channel and was crowned king by the citizens of London on December 22, 1135.

Author Extraordinaire Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947, the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his parents separated, Stephen and his older brother, David, were raised by their mother. Part of his childhood was spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family lived at the time, and then in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, he went to Durham, Maine, to live with his mother. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, with a B.S. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. King met his future wife, Tabitha Spruce, at the Fogler Library where they both worked. They were married in January of 1971. Stephen made his first short story sale to a mass market men's magazine shortly after his graduation from the University. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many of these were later gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies. Carrie for publication. A major paperback sale was soon to provide him with the means to leave teaching and write full-time. Stephen moved his family to southern Maine at the end of the summer of 1973. That winter, he wrote his next hit

Your child could be the next Stephen King.
Before you laugh, shake your head and move on to this week's reviews, think about how Stephen King got to be Stephen King. It wasn't easy.
So, we have Stephen, whose multitalented abilities and work ethic have resulted in his being a genre unto himself. And this was not a case of random lightning striking. Brother David is quite the genius in his own right, as well, to the extent that in some circles - small, but technologically important - he is known as David King, who has a younger brother who writes books or something. What do these guys have in common? Their mother, who, though no doubt uncertain about what the next month or day would bring, though no doubt tired from working drudge-like hours at drudge-like jobs, decided that she was going to make a difference. One person. And she did.

However, when Henry died in December 1135, Stephen broke his promise and quickly had himself crowned king of England.

(Saint and Founder of the Hungarian State) Stephen the first Hungarian King and founder of the Hungarian state was born in Esztergom in around 975, the son of Prince Géza and Sarolta. He became a prince in 997 and was crowned King in 1001. His wife was the Bavarian princess Gizella. She bore Stephen five children (Imre, Ottó, Bernát, Ágota and Hedvig). Stephen ruled for 41 years and died on August 15th 1038. He was buried in Székesfehérvár. His pagan name was Vajk (a word of Turkish origin meaning "hero") and his Christian name Stephen ("István" in Hungarian) was taken from the name of the martyr and protector of the church of Passau. An important role in Stephen's upbringing was played by the German priests who were, invited to come to Hungary by Prince Géza. Little is known with certainty about the future King's youth. In 995 accompanied by a magnificent retinue Stephen travelled to Bavaria and married Gizella, the daughter of Henry Prince of Bavaria.

King Stephen and Queen Matilda
- An Annotated Bibliography
Appleby, John T.. The Troubled Reign of King Stephen . London. G. Bell and Sons, Ltd.. 1969
Basic introduction to the reign of King Stephen. Talks about Matilda's death and her effect on Stephen on page 191 and 199. Cronne, H.A.. The Reign of Stephen 1135-1154: Anarchy in England . London. Weidenfeld and Nicolson. 1970
As above. Talks about Matilda's death and its effects on Stephen on page 64, and assesses her more generally on page 205. Cook, Petronelle. Queen Consorts of England: The Power Behind the Throne . New York. Facts on File, Inc.. 1993
Her assessment of Matilda is overly romanticized and not completely accurate (the date of her death is incorrect.) This book contains many inaccuracies and should not be used as an academic source. Davis, R.H.C.. King Stephen: 1135-1154 . New York. Longman Inc.. 1990 (Third Edition)
Authoritative biography of King Stephen. Davis deals more with the polics etc., but does mention Matilda's role in peacemaking (pp. 45-46) and when referring to her death he does so in a manner indicating Stephen was deeply affected by it (p. 114) William of Malmsbury's Chronicle of the Kings of England . London. Henry G. Bohn. 1847
Chroncile from the period in translation. Though Malmsbury's Chronicles ends with his death in 1142, he is a good source for the White Ship disaster (pp. 454-57), assesses Stelphen's character (p. 491) and is admiring of Matilda's behaviour in 1141 (pp. 521, 523, 528)

18. The Life Of St. Stefan Of Decani
The Life of St. king stephen of Decani. St. king stephen of Decaniis one of the best known Saints of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
http://www.kosovo.com/svkrlj.html
The Life of St. King Stephen of Decani St. King Stephen of Decani is one of the best known Saints of the
Serbian Orthodox Church. Through his holy and incorruptible relics God has performed numerous miracles.
Today, as the Serbian people suffer through another turbulent chapter in their history, they would do well to bring to mind the exemplary character of their martyred King Stephen Uros III (Decanski). He was born the eldest son of the saintly King Milutin (Stephen Uros II) and his wife Elizabeth, a Hungarian princess. Living at the court of his parents, the heir-apparent received a good education, his mind exercised by study of the language and writings of his people, and his heart strengthened by study of the Holy Scripture and the teachings of the Orthodox Faith.
The good fruit of his upbringing proved itself when King Milutin was forced to send him as hostage to the Tartar chief Nogyi. In spite of the potential dangers, Stephen was obedient to his father's will and did not resist, trusting his life to the Lord. And his hope was not in vain. He eventually made friends with one of the Tartar nobles, who succeeded in assisting his safe return home.
When Stephen came of age, his parents arranged that he marry the daughter of the Bulgarian King Smilatz, and the young couple were given the land of Zeta, where they settled until such a time as Stephen would be called to succeed his father to the throne. Meanwhile, King Milutin had remarried, and his second wife, Simonide, plotted in order that their son Constantine inherit the throne. She convinced Milutin that Stephen wanted to seize the throne prematurely, and the deceived Milutin ordered that his son be captured, that he be blinded to ensure that he never again entertain such treachery, and that he be sent as a prisoner to Constantinople.
