Robert E. Howard
Robert E. Howard is known best as the creator of Conan, a character that has moved beyond his humble origins into film, television, comics, and other media. Though, despite his suicide at the age of thirty, Howard wrote a huge number of stories covering a variety of genres. From the fantasy tales he is most famous for to westerns and boxing stories, whatever subject Howard tackled there was no doubting his enthusiasm, or his ability as an author. Though Conan is his most famous creation, most of his best writing is found in his other tales, amongst them genuinely chilling stories like Worms of the Earth. Howard's obvious knowledge of history added a depth which many of his imitators have lacked, and his descriptions of ancient hideous prehistoric peoples and places generally surpasses that of renowned masters such as Lovecraft. Although occasionally rough-cut and overrunning with testosterone, Howard's writing is still fresh and entertaining. As with much of the pulp fiction of the thirties, female characters have a tendancy to be weak and left on the sidelines (though one memorable exception is Belit the pirate captain from Queen of the Black Coast), but in that these stories are a mirror of their time.

ONE WHO WALKED ALONE ROBERT E. HOWARD: THE FINAL YEARS BY NOVALYNE PRICE ELLIS For the first time, information is available that provides a close observance of Robert E. Howard during his final years. Novalyne Price, the one girl Robert E. Howard dated, kept journals, diaries, and wrote short story-like essays of the conversations she had with Howard and other members of the Cross Plains community. After Howard committed suicide on June 11, 1936 she held onto the old journals, thinking that someday she would write about him. ONE WHO WALKED ALONE is the culmination of that dream. Here is an astounding and remarkable link with the past! Novalyne Price Ellis has written of Robert E. Howard as she knew him. This is not a second hand account. Photographs from Mrs. Ellis's collection are included. This is a new third printing of an eagerly sought after book which was made into a critically acclaimed film by director Dan Ireland from a screenplay by Michael Scott Myers who was one of Mrs. Ellis's English students. Robert E. Howard
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Robert Ervin Howard January 22 June 11 ), writer of fantasy and historical adventure pulp stories in the His most famous creation is the giant barbarian warrior Conan . His other characters include the Atlantean King Kull, the Puritan adventurer Solomon Kane, the Pict Bran Mac Morn and the female warrior Red Sonja Howard's prose is straightforward, colorful, and exciting rather than subtle and literary, attempting to entertain rather than instruct. Howard tells of worlds where violence is usually the best solution to problems, and where gold, jewels, and beautiful women are often the hero's reward. Howard corresponded with other pulp authors of the day, such as

Robert Howard
The Greatest Pulp Fiction Writer in the Whole Wide World
I have lived in the Southwest all my life, yet most of my dreams are laid in cold, giant lands of icy wastes and gloomy skies, and of wild, wind-swept fens and wilderness over which sweep great sea-winds, and which are inhabited by shock-headed savages with light fierce eyes. With the exception of one dream, I am never, in these dreams of ancient times, a civilized man. Always am I the barbarian, the skin-clad, tousle-haired, light-eyed wild man, armed with a rude ax or sword, fighting the elements and wild beasts, or grappling with armored hosts marching with the tread of civilized discipline, from fallow fruitful lands and walled cities. This is reflected in my writings, too, for when I begin a tale of old times, I always find myself instinctively arrayed on the side of the barbarian, against the powers of organized civilization.

Robert Ervin Howard
was born in Peaster , Texas in 1906. The son of one of the southwest's most prominent pioneer physicians, Howard's youth coincided with the last days of Americas frontier culture, a fact that would forever influence him and his stories.
Very early on, Howard steeped himself in the folklore and history of the southwest, the Rio Grande valley. He became fascinated with the legendary virility and strength of the pioneers and delighted in the innate poetry found in the exploration of virgin land.

Robert E. Howard
Now is the time! Robert E. Howard had a short but productive career. Born in 1906, Howard was dead by the middle of 1936. REH, as he has come to be known by his fans was born January 22, 1906 at Peaster, Texas. The family moved to Cross Plains, Texas in 1919, where Howard would live out the remainder of his life. In 1924, at the age of eighteen, REH made his first sale, a story called "Spear and Fang." Although his writing career moved along slowly, by 1930 he was a regular in the magazine Weird Tales . Already he had created such characters as Solomon Kane, Kull and Steve Costigan, and, his writings grew to include fight stories, Oriental stories, historical adventures, and Westerns. His most famous character, Conan, however, was yet to come. Conan first appeared in Weird Tales in December of 1932 and quickly became Howard's most loved character. By 1936, Robert E. Howard was at his height, but his mother's health had been very poor since 1935 and was a constant worry to Howard. She went into a coma in 1936 and when Howard was enformed on June 11th that she would never emerge, he walked to his car, got in and put a bullet into his brain. Although REH was only thirty when he died, he left a legasy of characters and stories that has continually increased his popularity over the decades. His stories are constantly being reprinted and finding their way to new fans.

As printed in Savage Sword of Conan #200
The future creator of Conan, Robert Ervin Howard, was born January 22, 1906, at Peaster, Texas, a tiny hamlet some forty-five miles southwest of Fort Worth. The father, a country physician, moved the little family the length and breadth of Texas over the next several years before finally settling at Cross Plains, a small town in Central Texas, in 1919. While yet in high school, young Robert began submitting short stories to the publications of the time. A chronological list of submissions in a letter to a friend, written circa 1929, indicated the first submission was "Bill Smalley and the Power of the Human Eye," rejected by both Western Story and Adventure in 1921. He finally made his first sale in 1924 when Weird Tales accepted "Spear and Fang," a short tale about Cro-magnon and Neanderthal, for $18, payable on publication. Robert worked at a number of odd jobs after graduating from high school, for his writing brought in only meager income. He worked in a law office as a private secretary, packed a rod for a geologist, wrote up oil field news for various newspapers, as a public stenographer and finally in a drugstore. In the fall of 1926, discouraged with his lack of success at the writing game, he enrolled in a bookkeeping course at Howard Payne College in Brownwood.

Project Pride of Cross Plains Restores the Robert E. Howard Home.
Project Pride is a community organization in Cross Plains, Texas, which bought and restored the Robert E. Howard home (with financial support from REH fans around the world, and from the late Alla Ray Morris, who had inherited the rights to REH's works). They now operate the Home as a museum in REH's memory, and they love to have an opportunity to show it off for visitors. Bob's room is particularly well done. It is not open on a regular basis, so it is best to make arrangements in advance, by writing Project Pride P.O. Box 534 Cross Plains, TX 76443. Each June, Project Pride and the City of Cross Plains sponsor Robert E. Howard Remembrance Day, during which special postal cancellations and commemorative T-shirts are offered, tours of the home are available, and the Cross Plains Library puts on display some of their holdings of REH original manuscripts. It's a great holiday for a Howard fan. While much has been done in the ten years since Project Pride first bought the house, a lot remains, and Cross Plains is not a wealthy community. Any support from REH fans either through joining Project Pride, or through donations earmarked for the Howard Home helps with the ongoing efforts to preserve Howard's memory in his hometown. Project Pride Is a non-profit organization intent on keeping Cross Plains a clean, attractive, and developing community and in preserving and documenting the history and heritage of the area.
