One of Linda's fictional characters said, "To successfully survive life on the prairies you've got to have no imagination at all, or one so rich that it takes you away." Linda's imagination, the latter, saved her soul while growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She attained a B.A. from the University of Winnipeg, ran away to see the rest of the world, then came back and received a M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from the University of Manitoba. She taught for a decade. Now she writes full-time for both young adults and adults. She still lives in Winnipeg, still counts on her imagination to take her away, but is a habitual traveller and relies more heavily on airplanes. Selected Publications: Devil's Darning Needle . Erin, Ontario: The Porcupine's Quill, 1999.
Mercy's Birds . Toronto: Tundra Books, 1998.
Promise Song . Toronto: Tundra Books Inc., 1997.

Review by Helen Norrie excerpt:
I was in a particularly bad mood. Just before I left the house my mother had declared, brightly, that we could spend Saturday together reorganizing my closet and dresser drawers. Even new shelf paper. She said it the way I would imagine other mothers announcing a trip to an L.A. film studio to watch the taping of a movie staring Keanu Reeves. I looked at Lauren, sitting there so smug and proud just because of her cousin. I wanted to make her feel as bad as I did. "Well, that can't be true," I said, "because Jessica Jann is my father's daughter from his first marriage and I happen to know that she's going to be in New York taping a special." All three girls leaned forward and stared at me. "Would you repeat that please?" Mara said, her eyes bulging out in an unattractive way. I licked my lips. I couldn't believe I'd said that about Jessica Jann. I couldn't believe I'd said anything...

BOOKS • linda holeman, MERCY'S BIRDS Mercy's life is spinning outof control. Her mother seems to be shrinking as she retreats
http://www.resd.mb.ca/resd_hs/res_pd/au_99/hbooks.html
MERCY'S BIRDS Mercy's life is spinning out of control. Her mother seems to be shrinking as she retreats more and more to the security of her bedroom. Her aunt is growing larger as she retreats into tarot cards and alcohol. While Mercy tries to keep up at school and with her job, she lives in fear of the day that Barry, her aunt's boyfriend, comes back to live with them all. Will help for the family come from an unexpected source? And will it be accepted? PROMISE SONG The year is 1900, and like many thousands of children before them, fourteen-year-old Rosetta and her small sister Flora have been sent across the sea from an English orphanage to make their home in a new country. But when they arrive, their dream of a family vanishes. Instead, Rosetta faces greater hardships than she ever imagined-and greater rewards, as she learns the true meaning of sisterhood. FLYING TO YELLOW The short stories which make up "Flying to Yellow" recreate the small, yet huge world of family relationships – the nuances, the silences, the subtle exchanges between people together for the reasons that make a family – blood ties, love, necessity. They embody the unvoiced emotions that we experience as children, siblings, parents and lovers – the thin web of relationships which bind us together. SAYING GOODBYE Becoming a teenager means saying goodbye to more than just childhood. It can mean abandoning moonstruck notions of romantic love. It can facing the fact that sometimes there are no easy answers in a complicated world. And it can mean saying goodbye to a part of oneself that is lost forever.

Linda, where were you born and raised? I was born in Winnipeg, capital city of the prairie province of Manitoba- right in the centre of Canada. I spent my first ten years in Winnipeg's very colourful and rather historic "north end".This was the area of the city that attracted new immigrants, bringing their cultures and languages and religions. My childhood was very rich with memories of that place. After that we moved to a new suburb, much less colourful and more homogenized, actually rather drab. I felt a keen loss. Education?
