Jim Hightower
Jim Hightower's roots are firmly planted in his populist Texan origins and were nurtured by the discussions he heard outside his father's newsstand on Main Street. He worked his way through college to graduate from North Texas University with a degree in government, and he went on to a year of graduate studies in international affairs at Columbia University. In the late 1960's, Jim Hightower moved to Washington, where he served as legislative aide to Senator Ralph Yarborough, worked on rural development issues for the Rural Housing Alliance, then founded and directed the Agribusiness Accountability Project. During this last period - 1970 to 1975 - Jim Hightower investigated the impact of monopolys on farm and food policies. This resulted in articles in national publications and testimonies before congressional committees and ultimately two books, written with his partner, Susan DeMarco: "Eat Your Heart Out" and "Hard Tomatoes, Hard Times." From 1975 to 1976, Jim Hightower was campaign manager for Fred Harris, working for his beliefs and not for pay.

Jim Hightower, the country's most popular populist, is an author, radio commentator and political spark plug who speaks his mind with a hearty dose of humor. This Texan has spent over two decades battling Washington and Wall Street on behalf of consumers, children, working families, environmentalists, small businesses and "just plain folks." At the Taos Media Forum, Hightower will discuss the misconceptions many of us have about our mass media on the eve of our next Presidential election, suggesting some strategies for creating a more responsive and responsible media. He will also sign copies of his latest book, If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote They Would Have Given Us Candidates at the Forum bookstore after the presentation.

Interview with Jim Hightower
A hellraising Texas radio personality fights to stay on the dial.
by Evan Smith Former Texas agriculture commissioner, former editor of the Texas Observer and, now, former radio personality? Jim Hightower hopes not, but even he's not sure what the future holds. Officials of the ABC Radio Networks recently notified the self-described "kick-ass populist" that they were dropping his weekly talk show, "Hightower Radio," which had 1 million listeners across the country. If Hightower can't find a new syndicator, progressives will lose yet another sympathetic voice in the media. On a mild day in early September, shortly after his meeting with ABC Radio, Hightower met with Mother Jones at Las Manitas, Austin's classic Mexican eatery. Over barbacoa tacos, he spokein his distinctive drawlabout his show, Bill Clinton, and the Republicans who would be king. Q So what happened to your show? A : I see the ABC action as the result of what I call the three M's: my message, the merger with Disney, and marketing, or lack thereof. ABC did a terrific job of getting me an initial stable of stationsit's very unusual for someone who's never had radio experience to be able to launch a national show. But in our second year, some of the stations began to balkI believe because of pressure from advertisers. We lost San Diego and St. Paul. At that point, ABC began to get a little antsy about what I was doing. Then came the merger, which, of course, I took on-on the air. The next thing I know I'm hearing ABC is in all kinds of budget meetings. It seems the bean counters were very focused on what was being broadcast. I think somebody higher up began to listen to the show and decided this is not a message for the new Disney/ABC, and that they didn't want to put more money into it.

Jim Hightower battles the right with humor and courage
By MARTY RACINE
He is perpetual motion, a whip of a man in jeans, work shirt, all-seeing glasses and white Stetson. Continuous movement helps spread the word. RESOURCES Photo Gallery His mustache twitches, betraying a chuckle over the absurdity of some injustice or another. Humor guides him through it. Former Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower is moving again, sharpening his wit and rallying the troops on his nationwide Rolling Thunder Downhome Democracy Tour. En route, he's become one of the dynamic populist voices of his era. Equal parts Will Rogers, Franklin Roosevelt and P.T. Barnum, Hightower is the card-carrying comedian of farmer-labor bedrock progressivism. As commentator, columnist and public speaker, he's mad and funny as hell, battling the Powers That Be on behalf of the Powers That Ought to Be: consumers, environmentalists, small-business owners, family farmers. Politically, he's so far to the left that he shares with certain rightists an outsider's moral outrage. Big Government, Big Business: both run amok. The true political spectrum, Hightower says, is top to bottom, and the vast majority are below shouting range of Washington and Wall Street.

Jim Hightower: Radio Populist To Be Muzzled?
By Jeff Cohen and Norman Solomon Media Beat , September 22, 1995 The most distinctive new voice on talk radio is in danger of being silenced. Populist Jim Hightower has built a following on 150 stations nationwide during the last 16 months while breaking most of the rules for talk radio hosts. Instead of shouting, he speaks with a soft Texas twang. He actually lets callers who oppose him be heard. And his barbs are not aimed at women, gays, minorities or the poor but at the rich and powerful. Other talk hosts fulminate about "welfare queens." Hightower dwells on the "welfare kings" the Fortune 500. Hightower has become talk radio's unabashed advocate for blue-collar workers, pensioners, family farmers and middle-class consumers. The real political spectrum, explains Hightower, is not right-to-left: "It's top-to-bottom, and the vast majority of people aren't even in shouting distance of the economic and political powers at the top." Although he's been likened to Will Rogers, Hightower
