"To be or not to be", need not be the question today as in William Shakepeare's, "Hamlet." In those days, some five hundred years ago, people believed that one must rise above his suffering and so be called a noble sufferer. Of course, few were able to rise above anything then. Poverty, physical and mental disease, dirt, toil and sweat of a dreary life brought on an early death for most. Today people have choices. No one need stay stuck because we now realize that all persons have the potential to grow. And we are pleased to be part of the therapeutic process which opens the way for clients to tap into their potential for change and growth. We have been practicing psychotherapists for thirty-five years in Bethesda, MD., Manassas,Va., Durham, NH and Deep Creek Lake, MD. We presently practice in Durango, Colorado with our daughter Penney S. Stahl, MA. We do individual, marital and family and group therapy and and work as a team with our clients. Most of our clients have been referred to us by other clients, Now we have the pleasure of reaching out through this www home page.

JAMES JOYCE GOES TO THE BEACH
Poseidon changed himself into a horse
to mate with Demeter, who turned into a mare
giving birth to Arion, a flying horse
    (horses and wings, an irresistible
    double dose of symbolic power).
    Whether the horse latitudes
    or Chincoteague ponies,
    a beguiling combination of marine
and equine symbols emerges from the surf.
All islands Pitcairn, for example have romantic myths linked to the sea. Sometimes islands are metaphors for imprisonment, a sea-girded confinement from which one must always plan to escape Shark Island, St. Helena, and Alcatraz; even Ireland. But for most, islands are an image of refuge, or even paradise: Hawaii, Tahiti, Bermuda, Monhegan and Ireland. The mythology of islands is dependent on oceanography, and volumes of theology. Walk along an empty beach, feel, know, see, see the sea: a glimpse of horses in waves washing up on shore

    A BAPTISM OF TRAVEL
Homer, is a long bus journey essential to a poet's production? Perhaps
ship or train or plane would do if we agree it should be in the dark in a
narrow tube of thought flying or floating west into the promising night of
raucous catcalls and hints of insight
or I could attach myself firmly to glaucous gull wings and swim through
waves of discovery until at last we catch up with Viking ships that plow
through the slate sea with Churchillian confidence that the edge of light
the line over there will not be the end
of the world at all no not at all but just the beginning of the end the
first chapter of becoming and dying as good stories reveal and conceal as
we always knew and want to hear yet again flap flap breasting gray waves into the curl of birth and the best of the rest.

I am a decendant of Alexander Herbert of Herbert's Corners. I remain most interested in any material which might become available regarding my family. Sincerely, Joseph Herbert (jjherbert@earthlink.net). June 21, 2001: Dear Mr Lewis, I wonder if you could guide me in my inquiry regarding my family, i.e., that of Alexander Herbert. 1. Do you know if the most logical assumption is that he would have been recruited in Ireland as a laborer for the Rideau Canal ? Were laborers recruited from all over Ireland, and how was that done? Do you know of a book which addresses this subject ? Do you know in what year he might have immigrated to Ottawa, and might there be any record of his immigration, or source for further information ? Michael Daley in Osgoode Township knows a lot about the Herberts. He wrote the family history for the Herbert Family (available from the Osgoode Township Historical Society), and is a descendant of Patrick Herbert and Bridget Herbert. You should get your hands on a copy of his work. The Herberts came to Osgoode Township in 1837. I don't know if they were working on the Rideau Canal prior to coming to Osgoode Township. The construction of the Canal covered the period from 1826-1832. Some of the canal workers came directly from Ireland, however, I believe most of them came from the Bytown area - some were part of the 1823 Peter Robinson Settlers, others were connected to the Richmond and Perth military settlements.
