In which we are introduced to Captains Hawk and Fisher, husband and wife team, and about the only honest Guards in the hell hole town of Haven. They are assigned to bodyguard a politician, Councillor Blackstone, but very soon he is dead. So instead they end up investigating his murder which allows Green to write a fairly classic "locked-room murder mystery" but there's nothing classic about the setting, with magicians, werewolves, vampires, and legendary heroes being stirred into the plot. The prose is fairly pedestrian, but the plot rattles along at a good pace, with all the action set in one night. It's not a particularly convoluted problem I managed to spot most of the clues (except, to my embarrassment, the big one of how the door was locked from the inside), but it makes for a fun detective story set in an exotic locale with the odd sword fight thrown in for good measure.

It's a typical day in Haven: wherever trouble rears its ugly head - be it mortal or supernatural - Captains Hawk and Fisher are there to sort it out.
The Captains, husband and wife, are the only honest cops in the down and dirty city of magic and mayhem, where double dealing, murder and corruption flourish. An invincible team, they've proven their mettle against shapechanging sorcerers, necrofiliac vampires, werewolves and a host of dastardly villains.
And nothing's going to stop them this time; not a Family's monstrous secret; not charges of treason; not even death itself…

Captains Hawk and Fisher are the only honest cops in the down and dirty magical city of Haven. In a place where anything can be bought, stolen or fought for, they've stood up for decency and right; together, they have taken on everything from vampires and werewolves to conniving politicians. But now it's their last case as members of Haven's City Guard, and all hell is breaking loose - because they're not leaving town without doing a little cleaning up first. The bad guys are going down, whatever it takes.
Meanwhile, back in the Forest Kingdom, King Harald has been assassinated and the call has gone out to Prince Rupert and Princess Julia, to return to the Land they once called home, to bring a murderer to justice.
Two legends, two sets of heroes, bound together at last: by a crime that threatens all reality, and by the terrible truth that lies beyond the Blue Moon.

Many fantasy authors see their fan base falling clearly along gender lines. Your work though, attracts male and female readers. What aspects of your work, do you think, account for your widespread popularity?
I like to think my work appeals to male and female readers because I give equal time and attention to my male and female characters. Fisher is just as important to me, and as interesting, as Hawk. And there's always been strong romantic, if not Romantic, elements to everything I write. Action scenes and general weird shit are always fun, but it's the character interactions that bring my work alive.

Deathstalker Legacy
by Simon R Green
Two hundred years after Owen Deathstalker and his superhuman companions saved the Empire of Humanity and inaugurated a Golden Age, life is good. The Empire is bigger than it was, safer and more stable. The deranged Tyrant, Empress Lionstone, is dead, replaced by a benevolent constitutional monarchy under the just and righteous House Campbell, assisted by a business-like parliament. Clones, Espers and Aliens, once despised and hunted, are fellow citizens, and the feared AIs of Shub are now Humanity's helpmeets and dogsbodies. Why, even the gladiators in the Arena, fighting for the amusement of the baying crowds, almost never die any more (Regen technology has come on nicely). Standing at the forefront of the new, enlightened Imperial Society are the Paragons. Fearless law-enforcers, staunch and incorruptible, they spend their time hunting down the few remaining dregs of the former corrupt order: Aristocratic diehards, Anarchist hoodlums, Rogue espers... It's a dirty job, but their problems are a mere pin-prick when compared to past iniquities... First among the Paragons stand Lewis Deathstalker, and Finn Durandel, responsible for peace and security on the Capital world of Logres, two shining knights of Truth and Justice... Well, obviously it's all going to end in tears, isn't it?

Drinking Midnight Wine by Simon R Green
Simon R Green has written some great fun, heroic magical fantasies with a twist - the heroes can be quite twisted themselves or at the very least, they don't usually start off being heroic. Drinking Midnight Wine is no exception. Toby Dexter, by his own admission pretty much a loser, doesn't seem ideal material to save the world. But when, in our ordinary world, known as Veritie, he follows a beautiful woman off a train and finds himself in the parallel magical world of Mysterie, Toby soon realises he's going to have to act decisively or he'll be dead. This book starts off brilliantly. We are drawn quickly and easily into Toby's character and into his fairly boring life. The switch to the magical world of Mysterie is smooth and accomplished. Once in this world, Green launches us into its oddities with some intriguing characters, a suavely evil villain, and a nicely depicted punch-up augmented by supernatural abilities. This is not, however, the sort of fantasy where the hero wields a magical sword and saves the world by fighting. Instead, Toby and his friends have to battle evil partly by having the courage to confront it at all. In a sense, power here is not muscular but moral, and the battleground is choice, free-will and purpose.

Heroes, all. Blue Moon Rising. With those words, acclaimed New YorkTimes bestselling author simon R. green ended Blue Moon Rising.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/beyondthebluemoon.html
Simon R. Green, Beyond The Blue Moon (Roc, 2000) "They set off down the dusty trail that led into the Forest, and so passed out of history and into legend. And wherever they went, and whatever they found, Rupert, Julia, the unicorn, and the dragon faced it all together. Heroes, all." Blue Moon Rising With those words, acclaimed New York Times best-selling author Simon R. Green ende d Blue Moon Rising . The Demon Prince had been banished, the threat of the Blue Moon ended, the long night over, and the Forest Land devastated but not defeated. His father dead and his older brother Harald on the throne, Rupert and his ladylove, the Princess Julia, saw no point in staying. With a sackful of jewels liberated from the Treasury, and their friends the dragon and the unicorn at their sides, they vanished from the Forest, leaving behind Arthur-like legends that they'd return someday when the need was greatest. It's fifteen years later, and again the Forest Land is thrown into chaos. King Harald is dead, the killer unknown. The Blue Moon is again on the rise, threatening to awake the Wild Magic and consume the world in chaos. Dangerous political factions clash in the court, and only two people have any chance of finding the King's killer and once again saving the day. Rupert and Julia. However, they no longer exist. In their place are Hawk and Isobel Fisher, partners, lovers, honest cops in a corrupt and dangerous city-state ironically named Haven. The best of the best, murder mysteries and world-saving are their specialty. But the better part of a decade spent in the worst part of a hellhole, fighting battles in a war they can't win, has taken its toll. That's why, when a messenger from the Forest Kingdom finds them and begs their help, they ultimately decide that it's time to move on. Settling a few old scores in Haven in their usual manner, Hawk and Fisher (once Prince Rupert and Princess Julia) journey home to face the greatest challenge of their lives.

ancient creature will rise from his earthen prison, and all will be decided, in DrinkingMidnight Wine, the new novel from bestselling author simon R. green.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/drinking.midnight.wine.html
Simon R. Green, Drinking Midnight Wine (Gollancz, 2001; Roc, 2001) What value can one ordinary man have in a magical world? What can a mortal bring to the affairs of immortals? When Toby Dexter impulsively follows a strange woman off the train and through a door that shouldn't exist, he begins the final sequence of events aimed towards destroying all that is, and all that could be, and upsetting the delicate balance between the mundane and the magical. It all starts out of love, and it'll end in hatred and vengeance, unless Toby's able to make the right choices in a very difficult world. Gone is the safe mortal world he once knew. Overnight, he's become a key player, a legendary "focal point" in the supernatural world of Mysterie, which exists alongside the real world of Veritie. And everyone seems to know much more than he does. For love of the dismissive, capricious, enigmatic Gayle, Toby will do just about anything. He'll challenge trolls, venture into the realms of the dead, spit in the eye of a demi-god, face off against the Serpent's Son, and alter the course of destiny. Something terrible and strange and catastrophic is about to go down in Mysterie. Why else would Nicholas Hob, also known as the Serpent's Son, and Heaven's fallen stormtrooper, Angel, be in town? Why would the Reality Express be delivering a frantic load of refugees from Mysterie to Veritie? Why would the immortal riddle known as the Waking Beauty have put Jimmy Thunder, God for Hire and last descendant of Thor, on the case? Why would the beautiful but tragically addled Luna stir from her exile? And just who or what is Gayle? There's a lot of questions, and the answers won't please anyone.

Despite repeated rejections from publishers early in his career, he continued writing - and actually had six novels waiting to go when he got his first book deal! Those books became the "Hawk and Fisher" series, which followed the escapades of a husband-and-wife pair of cops who battle the evils of Haven. Also popular are his Owen Deathstalker novels, a series of swashbuckling space operas which have been compared to Star Wars. Order this book Taking some time out from the series space opera and fantasy of his popular Deathstalker and Hawk and Fisher books, Simon R. Green returns to the quirky urban fantasy mode of his less-well-known standalone Shadows Fall with this dual world adventure.
Toby Dexter is an ordinary guy, with a deadend job at a bookstore and an aimless, totally predictable existence. He has always longed for something different, something better, but having reached his thirties without any sign of different or better coming along, he has pretty much given up. There's just one not-quite-ordinary thing in his life: he has fallen in love with a woman who shares his daily commute. He doesn't know a thing about herin fact, he has never actually spoken to herbut still he can't get her out of his mind.
One day, in the train station where both Toby and his mystery woman both finish their commute, Toby watches the woman walk through a door he's positive was never there before. On impulse, he follows...and everything changes.
Toby has passed into Mysterie, the world of magic that lies behind the real world of Veritie. Unfortunately, denizens of Veritie aren't really supposed to enter Mysterie, and by doing so Toby has made himself a focal point, a pivot around which great events revolve, and from whom great resolutions, or great disasters, may stem. And great disaster may be in the offing, for something evil is afoot in Mysterie, something that may threaten the existence of both the worlds. Toby very definitely doesn't want to play the hero. But as he and his mystery womanwhose name is Gayle, and whose human aspect is only the smallest part of her true natureset out to discover what's going on, he begins to realize (much to his dismay) that he may have no choice.
