Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. 6 vols. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887-1889 was the "most-quoted" biographical source for 19th and early 20th America. Appleton's, due to its age, reflects the bias and prejudice of late 19th Century America. It is also estimated that 100 to 200 of the 35,000 biographies are entirely fictitious. Additionally, the OCR technology used to transfer the text to the web was, at best, only a 99% accurate. We Buy Books Search Forms Gallery Newsletter In Praise of Older Women by Kathleen Hudson The flashy explosion of women mystery writers and fictional female detectives in the '80s and '90s tends to obscure the fact that they are not new. Women have written mysteries since the beginning of the genre, and female detectives have existed almost as long. Anna Katharine Green
Anna Katharine Green, an American woman, was among the first mystery writers. She graduated from college (un usual for a woman of the time) in 1866, and returned home to Buffalo, New York, to write. Her father, a lawyer, helped arrange an interview with George Putnam after she finished her book The Leavenworth Case. Putnam's decided to publish it in 1878. It sold over a million copies and wore out three sets of plates. Putnam's has published mysteries ever since.
Not only did her mysteries require familiarity with firearms, ballistics and anatomy, but she also created the first series sleuth. Ebenezer Gryce was a policeman, a "portly, comfortable person with an eye that never pierced." When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle made an American tour, he stopped to pay his respects to Anna Katharine Green, who created her detective a decade before Sherlock Holmes appeared.
Although Ebenezer Gryce was Anna Katharine Green's main sleuth, she extended her writing to include a few female detectives. Amelia Butterworth had no series of her own, but she appeared in several of the Gryce series books. She was a Manhattan spinster, an older "woman of inborn principles and strict Presbyterian training" with considerable social status. She provides assistance to Gryce in understanding his female suspects. As she says, "I am as sly as he." Though Gryce is a police officer, and Butterworth only a talented amateur sleuth, they are true partners, whose talents and strengths compliment one another.

ANNA KATHARINE GREEN 1846-1935
Described as diminuitive, shy, and introverted and earning more than her husband throughout their marriage, Green held traditional values, preferring Victorian-style clothing and opposing the actions of the women sufferagists. She was strongly religious and a concern for moral strength and respect for divine providence permeate her work. Throughout her career she worked daily on her writing while also tending the garden, the house, and participating actively in church and community affairs. Her knowledge of the law and forensic police procedure came from her father, James Wilson Green, who was the well-known trial lawyer and his friends who were criminal attorneys, judges, and chiefs of police. As a child Green was often in their company as they discussed cases. Green enjoyed almost 25 years as a bestselling author. Her popularity began to decline in the early twentieth century when language became more less formal and more colloquial and direct. The most comprehensive work on Anna Katharine Green is Patricial D. Maida's
