I just finished reading Deshpande's 'A Matter of Time' and really enjoyed her writing style. She kept me engaged in the novel until the ending through the use of some very creative techniques - such as speaking to the readers directly in some portions of the novel. Thus, I am opening this thread for others who have read any of Deshpande's works (or 'A Matter of Time') and would like to offer their commentary/opinions/recommendation (of her other works). We can discuss the plot/characters/meaning/use of imagery or symbols in 'A Matter of Time.'

The Short Stories of Shashi Deshpande
by Chandra Holm Deshpande lives in Bangalore, South India. Literature was a common fare at her home from her early childhood as her father Adya Rangacharya, was an eminent playwright, author and scholar of Sanskrit and Kannada languages. She started her literary career in England by writing short pieces on her stay there, moved on to writing short stories which were published in leading Indian magazines. In 1978, The Legacy, the first collection of short stories was published in India. Since then, she has brought out four other collections of short stories, has written six novels, two crime novels, and four books for children. Her work has been translated into various Indian and European languages. Whether she writes short stories or novels, Deshpande writes mainly about "everyday India. A society in which we breathe, a culture to which we belong. Her major concerns emerge from our own environment, from our immediate world, holding up mirrors to our own lives (3)." She does not simplify India but presents India as it is to her readers. Deshpande herself says, "They (my novels) are just about Indian people and the complexities of our lives. (4)" Thus her works, particularly novels, demand undivided attention from the readers, demand that they understand the world that is being presented to them without any embellishment.

The Binding Vine
In her book the Binding Vine the narrator, Urmi, goes to meet her friend, Vanaa, at the local hospital, and finds her caring for a mother and daughter. The daughter has been in an accident - she's unconscious - she has also been violently attacked and raped. But the mother does not want to believe what she is told: "it's not true" Urmi finds herself caught up in the story of the daughter, Kalpana, and the mother's attempts to protect the honour of her family. By writing about rape, Deshpande was breaking the silence on an issue which was rarely discussed - a silence which was intended to protect the honour of the males in the family: "
