Along with Samuel Richardson, Defoe is considered the founder of the English novel. Before his time stories were usually written as long poems or dramas. He produced some 200 works of nonfiction prose in addition to close 2 000 short essays in periodical publications, several of which he also edited. "One day, about noon, going towards my boat, I was exceedingly surprised with the print of a man's naked foot on the shore, which was very plain to be seen on the sand." (from Robinson Crusoe " In the School of Affliction I have learnt more Philosophy than at the Academy, and more Divinity than from the Pulpit: In Prison I have learnt to know that Liberty does not consist in open Doors, and the free Egress and Regress of Locomotion. I have seen the rough side of the World as well as the smooth, and have in less than half a Year tasted the difference between the Closet of a King, and the Dungeon of Newgate. "

Daniel Defoe, the son of a butcher, was born in London in 1660. He attended Morton's Academy, a school for Dissenters at Newington Green with the intention of becoming a minister, but he changed his mind and became a hosiery merchant instead.
In 1688 Defoe took part in the Monmouth Rebellion and joined William III and his advancing army. Defoe became popular with the king after the publication of his poem, The True Born Englishman (1701). The poem attacked those who were prejudiced against having a king of foreign birth.

Daniel Defoe was born in London in 1660, probably in September, third child and first son of James and Mary Defoe . Daniel received a very good education, as his father hoped he would become a minister , but Daniel wasn't interested. His family were Dissenters, Presbyterians to be precise, and those sects were being persecuted a bit at this time, so maybe Daniel had the right idea. He was always very tolerant of others' religious ideas himself. His mother died when he was ten, and his father sent him to a boarding school, after which he attended Morton's Academy, as he could not graduate from Oxford or Cambridge without taking an oath of loyalty to the Church of England. He was a very good student, and his teacher, the Reverend Mr. Norton himself, would later show up as a character in some of Daniel's fiction. Daniel graduated in 1679, and by then he'd pretty much decided against the ministry, though he wrote and spoke in favor of the Dissenters all his life . Later that year, he joined the army of the rebel Duke of Monmouth, who was attempting to take the throne from James II

Daniel Defoe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Daniel Defoe April 21 ), writer Born " Daniel Foe ", the son of James Foe, a butcher in the Stoke Newington neighborhood of London, England , he would later add the aristocratic sounding "De" to his name as a nom de plume . He was a famous pamphleteer, journalist and novelist, at a time when the novel form was in its infancy in the English language, and can thus fairly be said to be one of its progenitors. Defoe's pamphleting and political activities resulted in his arrest and imprisonment in 1703, principally on account of a pamphlet entitled "The Shortest Way with Dissenters", in which he ruthlessly satirised the High Anglican Tories, purporting to argue for the extermination of dissenters. He was released early in return for his cooperation. He is most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe (1719), about a man's shipwreck on a desert island and his subsequent adventures. It is arguably the first novel written in English. The story may have been based on the true story of the shipwreck of

Etexts: "The Apparition of Mrs. Veal" (22K) [1706] [Jack Lynch, Rutgers] The full title of this work, in characteristic C18 style, is "A True Relation of the Apparition of one Mrs. Veal the Next Day after her Death to one Mrs. Bargrave at Canterbury the 8th of September, 1705." This work has been regarded by some as a literary hoax, a work of fiction trying to pass itself off as journalism, but it is now known that the individuals referred to in this piece, including "Mrs. Veal" (actually "Miss Veal") really existed, and that Defoe reported the events in a manner consistent with other recountings of the same incident. Defoe did, however, embellish the reported events. - another etext here

Daniel Defoe
Biography
The son of a London butcher, Defoe was educated at a dissenting academy. He involved himself with various mercantile activities and was for a few years (1695-9) employed in the Glass Duty Office. He played a role in the Glorious Revolution and was in William's army of 1688. It followed that down through the years Defoe was in favor; but, in 1702, he was to run afoul of the governing authorities on account of his pamphlet, "The Shortest Way with the Dissenters". To hold an office in England, in the days of Defoe, it was necessary by the Test Act of 1673 to attend church, an Anglican church. If a dissenter wished to hold an office, he could get around the Test Act by occasionally attending at the parish church. The Occasional Conformity Bill was proposed to counter the growing practice. The bill was aimed at holders of municipal or national office, who, after qualifying by taking the Anglican Sacrament, afterwards attended a Nonconformist service. There was a provision for fines which went in their entirety to the informer. In 1704, Defoe was pilloried for the writing of his pamphlet. The move however somewhat backfired, as, instead of throwing rotten eggs, the crowd threw flowers. After a short stay in the stocks Defoe was sent to Newgate. Defoe was not apparently imprisoned for long. In 1704, he was released. While in prison he kept up his writing; and, upon his release, he founded The Review, an important event in the history of journalism. "Appearing thrice weekly down to 1713, it aimed at being an organ of commercial interests, but also expressed opinions on all sorts of political and domestic topics ... [it anticipated] the Tatler and the Specator." (Chambers.)
