O Caroline Cooney was born in 1947 and grew up in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. An excellent student and ambitious youth, she loved school and was involved in many different activities. By the time she was in tenth grade, Cooney played the piano for musical productions, directed a choir, and had a job as a church organist. Always an avid reader, Cooney often read series books such as THE HARDY BOYS and CHERRY AMES. These characters had a big influence on her life and in fact, she says "CHERRY AMES, STUDENT NURSE, was my reason to go to nursing school in Boston later in life." Cooney graduated from Greenwich High School in 1965 and attended various colleges, where she studied music, art, and English. It was in college that she began writing, and discovered a talent and joy in what would become an award-winning writing career. Cooney professes, "I love writing and do not know why it is considered such a difficult, agonizing profession. I love all of it, thinking up the plots, getting to know the kids in the story, their parents, backyards, pizza toppings."

Caroline Cooney I had a wonderful sixth grade teacher. His name was Mr. Albert. All the girls wanted to grow up and marry him, and all the boys wanted to be just like him. Every Friday, he made us write a short story. He had a stack of covers from New Yorker magazines detailed and brightly colored, like cartoons. He'd pass them out and we'd have to write a short story to match the picture we got. I was the one in the class who never stopped.
I love to write. I love to make things up. I'm in a library or a bookstore most days of the week, because I love to be around other people's books, too. Reading and writing books takes up most of my life. Now I've added talking about books on school visits, which is all the fun and none of the work of writing.
The best part of school visits is meeting my readers, since my three children are grown now and I don't get to hang out with teenagers (although I still play the piano for the four choirs in our middle school). School visits are such a neat way to see America. When you're in Indiana one week, Oregon the next, and Louisiana after that, you go home astonished and honored to have met all those wonderful kids and their teachers.
"Where do you get your ideas?" Readers ask this question of every writer. I don't usually know. I just wake up with a mind full of ideas. But we all have great ideas; I could go to your school and brainstorm with your class, and we'd end up with a great plot, or ten of them. The hard part is turning the idea into a book.

Caroline Cooney knew in sixth grade that she wanted to be a writer when "the best teacher I ever had in my life" made writing his main focus. "He used to rip off covers from The New Yorker and pass them around and make us write a short story on whichever cover we got. I started writing then and never stopped!" When her children were young, Caroline started writing books for young people with remarkable results. She began to sell stories to Seventeen magazine and soon after began writing books. Suspense novels are her favorites to read and write. "In a suspense novel, you can count on action." To keep her stories realistic, Caroline visits many schools outside of her area, learning more about teenagers all the time. She often organizes what she calls a "plotting game," in which students work together to create plots for stories. Caroline lives in Westbrook, Connecticut and when she's not writing she volunteers at a hospital, plays piano for the school musicals and daydreams!

Tod Lockwood has never wanted to be anyone's knight in shining armor. In fact, he wants to avoid having anything to do with girls, at least for the present. But that's before Devonny Stratton steps into his life out of the nineteenth century. The Face on the Milk Carton

No one ever really paid close attention to the faces of the missing children on the milk cartons. But as Janie Johnson glanced at the face of the ordinary little girl with her hair in tight pigtails, wearing a dress with a narrow white collara three-year-old who had been kidnapped twelve years before from a shopping mall in New Jerseyshe felt overcome with shock. Among Friends
Six high school juniors discover surprising, often painful, things about themselves and their relationships with the people around them in the diaries they are asked to keep as a three-month English assignment.
Both Sides of Time
Right now I'm in the middle of reading Both Sides of Time by Caroline B. Cooney. It's about a girl named Anna Sophia Lockwood who wants romance but her boyfriend, Sean, only cares about cars, not romance. Right now the town is in the process of tearing down the old Stratton mansion. Annie (her preferred name), thinks she is a romantic in the wrong time and wishes that she lived in the 1890's rather than the 1990's. That's when she falls through time into 1895. There she meets Hiram Stratton Jr. She instantly falls in love with him and he falls in love with her. There's only one problem. Strat (as he prefers to be called), has known Harriet Ranleigh ever since he can remember, and is expected to marry her. His father is the one who wants him to marry her because she is so rich. His sister Devonny knows that Harriet desperately wants to marry Strat and that she loves him.
At the same time all of this is going on, a man-servant is pushed down the basement stairs. one of Strat's friends, Walker Walkly tries to drag the Irish maid, Bridget, into his room so she spits on him. To get her back, when Devonny called the police to investigate, Walker told them that Bridget killed the servant, Matthew. Devonny doesn't speak up on her behalf and as a result, Bridget is sent to jail. Devonny, hours later, is sorry she didn't speak up because she knows Bridget wouldn't kill anybody, and now it's to late to save her, or so she thinks. At the moment, Annie is back in her own time, wishing she wasn't so she can help Bridget.
