I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774) William Collins was born ca 1799/1800 in Marion Dist, SC. He is a proven son of Jonathan Collins (bef 1755) as named in Jonathan's probate records (mixed in with Jonah Collins ' records) W. W. Sellers mentioned William in his book. Here is what he wrote (anything in brackets [...] was added by me for clarification): COLLINS. "... Of the two brothers, old Collins, Thomas and Jonah, the latter became the progenitor of the Collins below Marion and Pee Dee Island Collins; don't know much about them. There were two or three brothers, descendants of old Jonah, to wit: William, James and Jonah, these were either sons of old Jonah or grandsons. William Collins was the father of Mrs. Valentine Rowell; he may have had other daughters and sons, of whom nothing is known." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. William S. Collins (c1792) and - and Dorothy Eagerton of Marion Co, SC
Commentary Children Researcher List Register Report ... Home I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to William S. Collins. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774) William S. Collins was born ca 1791/92 (per 1850 census) in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). I don't know what his "S" middle initial stood for. I don't know who William's parents were. Census analysis reveals a few suspects, but nothing solid. I have a suspicion (but no direct evidence) that William is a brother to John J. Collins (c1790) William would have been about 8 years old by the time of the 1800 census, so he could be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). Dempsey Collins had one that age; Jonathan Collins had two under 10, but they are both proven, and this William isn't one of them; Thomas Collins had a son under 10, but he is not William's father. Of these, I'd remove Jonathan and Thomas from consideration, since they both have well documented children. That leaves Dempsey as the primary suspect. For the 1810 census, William would have been about 18 years old, so he should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1784/94).

William Collins
Petty France, London Collins, according to Piggott, "was a studious elder and a good pastor, noted for his peacable spirit. The Subjects he ordinarily insisted on in the Course of his Ministry, were the great and important Truths of the Gospel, which he handled with great Judgment and Clearness. How would he open the Miseries of the Fall! And in how moving a manner would he discourse of the Excellency of Christ, and the Virtues of his Blood, and his willingness to save poor awaken'd burdned [sic.] Sinners!... His sermons were useful under the Influence of Divine Grace, to convert and edify, to enlighten and establish, being drawn from the Fountain of Truth, the Sacred Scriptures, with which he constantly convers'd in their Original Languages, having read the best Criticks, Antient and Modern; so that Men of the greatest Penetration might learn from his Pulpit-Discourses, as well as those of the meanest Capacity". Such a testimony of his character and abilities well suits one thought to be co-editor (along with Nehemiah Coxe ) of the Confession of Faith (see Documentary Sources and Origins of the Confession) and one to represent his church and subscribe it.

WILKIE COLLINS
Go straight to Menu 1853 was a quieter year than for the 29 year-old Wilkie Collins. He had no publications out at the turn of the year and his only published work dated 1853 was ' Gabriel's Marriage ' which was published in Dickens's weekly Household Words 16-23 April 1853 and was then pirated in the USA by Littell's Living Age appearing on 28 May. It is a story of poverty, murder, superstition, a death-bed secret, and Christian forgiveness set in Brittany at the time of the persecution of the Catholic religion during the French revolution. It is notable for Wilkie's use of the weather and landscape to set the scene. And perhaps most remarkable to us now for the sentence "The White Women! the grave diggers of the drowned are out on the sea!". In 1856 Wilkie republished it in his collection of short stories After Dark Basil published late in 1852, was going "pretty well" Wilkie wrote in March "our first edition being nearly exhausted. It has been vehemently objected to as immoral by some of those virtuously inflammable ladies and gentlemen of Modern Times...As I have never written for these people and never will, then their condemnation is infinitely more acceptable than their approval." During March, Wilkie was put in touch with the French literary critic Émile Daurand Forgues to whom he sent a copy of Basil . In 1855 Forgues wrote one of the first literary criticisms of Collins's work and later translated two of his books into French.

COLLINS, WILLIAM WILKIE
He died at his house in Harley Street, London, on the I3th of December 1729. His writings are important as gathering together the results of previous English Freethinkers. The imperturbable courtesy of his style is in striking contrast to the violence of his opponents; and it must be remembered that, in spite of his unorthodoxy, he was not an atheist or even an agnostic. In his own words, “Ignorance is the foundation of atheism, and freethinking the cure of it “ (Discourse of Freethinking, 105). In philosophy, Collins takes a foremost place as a defender of Necessitarianism. His brief Inquiry Concerning Human Liberty (1715) has not been excelled, at all events in its main outlines, as a statement of the determinist standpoint. One of his arguments, however, calls for special criticism,—his assertion that it is selfevident that nothing that has a beginning can be without a cause is an unwarranted assumption of the very point at issue, He was attacked in an elaborate treatise by Samuel Clarke, in whose system the freedom of the will is made essential to religion and morality. During Clarke’s lifetime, fearing perhaps to be branded as an enemy of religion and morality, Collins made no reply, but in 1729 he published an answer, entitled Liberty and Necessity. Besides these works he wrote A Letter to Mr Dodwell, arguing that it is conceivable that the soul may be material, and, secondly, that if the soul be immaterial it does not follow, as Clarke had contended, that it is immortal; Vindication of the Divine Attributes (1710); Priestcraft in Perfection (1709), in. which he asserts that the clause “the Church . . . Faith” in the twentieth of the Thirty-nine Articles was inserted by fraud.
