A WAR OF EYES AND OTHER STORIES
Wanda Coleman
Born in Watts, daughter of a boxer and a domestic who worked in movie stars' homes, Wanda Coleman grew up to be a fighter. "The ebony Amazon," she calls herself in the title piece here, "subservient to none." Her stories back up that claim, matching the powerful punch of her poetry. A War of Eyes glows with the same fiery energy, vibrates in the same real-life-voice-register as Mad Dog Black Lady Imagoes (1983), and Heavy Daughter Blues: Poems and Stories 1968-1986 Most of Coleman's characters are black and poor. They inhabit certain tight, dark corners of Los Angeles where pain and humiliation and defeat take the place of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A pregnant teenager must overcome nausea to fend off creditors in a seedy office; a young mother dreams of opening her own family restaurant but ends up being recruited by pimps; a drug runner gets set-up by his partner; a punch-drunk ex-boxer-turned-preacher is gunned down by police. In the future-is-now world of A War of Eyes , everyone must be constantly combat-ready for the next face-off, with survival always at stake.

Chapter 14: Wanda Coleman
Wanda Coleman
Wanda Coleman

Born in Watts, Wanda Coleman continues to live in and write about Los Angeles. Beginning in 1977, she has published eight books of poetry and fiction, including Mad Dog Black Lady A War of Eyes and Other Stories (1988), and African Sleeping Sickness: Stories and Poems (1990). In 1984 she won a Guggenheim Fellowship for poetry. Coleman focuses on the failures and triumphs of urban African American women struggling against anonymity, poverty, racism, sexism, and violence. Like many blues lyrics, Coleman's writing is consistently direct and stark. She spotlights issues of power and subordination. Her works typically concentrate on sexual characters, relationships often characterized by men's severe mistreatment of women. Violence often erupts in her stories. Many of her female characters face the dilemma of wanting to express their passionate heterosexuality but contending with abusive and sometimes violent males. While most American writers prefer to ignore urban, dispossessed African American women, Wanda Coleman portrays their lives directly and sympathetically.

Wanda Coleman
FOUR POEMS
INTRUDER

i've broken thru poetry's back door. where have they
hidden the valuables? the refrigerator is empty and something
covered in green-gray fuzz stains my eyes and stings my
nose. the oven apron hangs from its hinge. the trash
of countless mealseggshells, coffee grounds, half-eaten fruit,
old cheesesticks to plates, litters unmopped floors. an inky
foot-deep ring circles the basin of the white enameled
tub. the unflushed toilet is feces-clogged. clusters of beer
bottles and ashtrays erupting with cigarette butts and spitballs crowd table and counter-tops. the tv buzzes its spill of white noise. the radio persistently whines those nostalgic rhythms innocence is ever lost by. in the closet, all coat pockets are frayed. in the jewel box, all the diamonds, rubies and pearls prove paste. i've broken into poetry's house. it smells dishonest/venal and there's nothing here worthy of theft AMERICAN SONNET (73) blueprinted here in the sizzling breath of righteous black ink, swaggers the sweaty kingfish, sliding blond-kinked

bed calls. i sit in the dark in the living room trying to ignore them in the morning, especially Sunday mornings it will not let me up. you must sleep longer, it says facing south the bed makes me lay heavenward on my back while i prefer a westerly fetal position facing the wall the bed sucks me sideways into it when i sit down on it to put on my shoes. this persistence on its part forces me to dress in the bathroom where things are less subversive the bed lumps up in anger springs popping out to scratch my dusky thighs my little office sits in the alcove adjacent to the bed. it makes strange little sighs which distract me from my work sadistically i pull back the covers put my typewriter on the sheet and turn it on the bed complains that i'm difficult duty its slats are collapsing. it bitches when i blanket it with books and papers. it tells me it's made for blood and bone lately spiders ants and roaches have invaded it searching for food
