Carew Ph.D. University of California, Riverside, 1970 RESEARCH INTERESTS: Cellular and molecular mechanisms of memory I have always loved mystery stories, especially "procedurals," which focus on the clever strategies and nifty tools used to solve particularly challenging puzzles. The mystery that has preoccupied most of my professional life centers on a deceptively simple question: How is it that we remember some things for a few seconds and others things for a lifetime? Said another way: What must go on in our brains to accomplish the seemingly effortless but actually quite remarkable tasks involved in storing different forms of memory? In my laboratory we explore these questions at a mechanistic level in a rather simple animal, the marine mollusc Aplysia . We use Aplysia because its nervous system affords significant advantages for identifying synaptic, biophysical, and molecular changes underlying learning and memory. In our experiments we use multiple levels of analysis: behavioral, cellular (current, voltage, and whole-cell patch clamp), molecular (analysis of second messenger systems, growth factors, and specific genes implicated in learning), structural (light and electron microscopy coupled with immunocytochemistry), and computational (quantitative analysis of single cells and small network interactions). Currently we have three parallel research programs: In the first program we study the synaptic and molecular steps involved in the transition from one stage of memory to another (e.g., from short-term lasting minutes, to intermediate-term lasting hours, to long-term lasting days and weeks). We have found that each stage can be distinguished by its distinctive underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms.

Thomas Carew Born, possibly at West Wickham, Kent. His father, Matthew Carew, a lawyer of some distinction, had been a Master in Chancery since I576, and was knighted by James I in I603. The family took up residence in London about I598, but nothing is known of Thomas Carew's early education. Matriculates at Merton College, Oxford ; graduates B. A. in January, I6I0/I6II. Incorporated B. A. of Cambridge. Admitted to the Middle Temple, presumably intending to enter the legal profession. Probably in consequence of his father's financial difficulties, accepts the offer of Sir Dudley Carleton, English Ambassador in Venice, to join Carleton's entourage as a secretary. On completion of the embassy's official business, returns to England with Carleton, in December. Accompanies Carleton's embassy to the Netherlands. By consequence of some written indiscretions bearing on Carleton's character, returns to England in August, having been discreetly but effectively dismissed from his post. Unsuccessfully seeking employment from various noble-men; recurrently in attendance at court. Father dies, August, I6I8. Makes one of an embassy to Paris headed by Sir Edward Herbert (later Lord Herbert of Cherbury). Perhaps meets the Italian poet Giambattista Marino, resident in Paris from I6I5 to I623.

Nothing is known of Carew's education before he matriculated at Merton College, Oxford , in 1608. Graduating B. A. in 1610/11, he was incorporated B. A. of Cambridge in 1612, after which he was admitted to the Middle Temple. From 1613 to 1616 Carew served as secretary to Sir Dudley Carleton on embassies to Italy and the Netherlands. After being fired for making insulting remarks about Carleton and his wife, Carew returned to England for a futile search for employment. In 1619, his father having died the previous year, Carew joined an embassy to Paris headed by Sir Edward Herbert (later Lord Herbert of Chirbury). Possibly, he met there the Italian poet Giambattista Marino. Thomas May 's comedy The Heir . In the early 1620s Carew associated with Ben Jonson and his circle, and also frequented the court. In 1630 Carew was made a gentleman of Charles I 's Privy Chamber Extraordinary. He was named Sewer in Ordinary to the King (that is, an official in charge of the royal dining arrangements). It is said he was "high in favour with that king, who had a high opinion of his wit and abilities." A Divine Mistress " and " Disdain Returned ," were prized for their wit.
