Caesar, Julius: Civil War After the First Triumvirate ended, the senate supported Pompey, who became sole consul in 52 b.c. Meanwhile, Caesar had become a military hero as well as a champion of the people. The senate feared him and wanted him to give up his army, knowing that he hoped to be consul when his term in Gaul expired. In Dec., 50 b.c. Two tribunes faithful to Caesar, Marc Antony and Quintus Cassius Longinus (see under Cassius ) vetoed the bill and were quickly expelled from the senate. They fled to Caesar, who assembled his army and asked for the support of the soldiers against the senate. The army called for action, and on Jan. 19, 49 b.c. Caesar's march to Rome was a triumphal progress. The senate fled to Capua. Caesar proceeded to Brundisium, where he besieged Pompey until Pompey fled (March, 49 b.c. ) with his fleet to Greece. Caesar set out at once for Spain, which Pompey's legates were holding, and pacified that province. Returning to Rome, Caesar held the dictatorship for 11 days in early December, long enough to get himself elected consul, and then set out for Greece in pursuit of Pompey. Pharsalus , Caesar camped in a very strategic location. Pompey, who had a far larger army, attacked Caesar but was routed (48

    Julius Caesar Scaliger
(It., DELLA SCALA). Aristotle whom he calls "imperator noster; omnium bonarum artium dictator perpetuus". Like Aristotle he makes imitation the basis of all poetry. He spoiled his work by exaggerations; not only does he place Virgil above Homer but he places the Homeric epics below the "Hero and Leander" of Musaeus, a poet of the Byzantine period; it is true that Scaliger identifies him with the legendary Musaeus, a disciple of Orpheus (Poet., V, 2). He declared that Seneca was not surpassed in grandeur by any of the Greek tragedians. This last opinion was not without its consequences; it explains the excessive liking of Shakespeare , Corneille, and many of their contemporaries for the tragedies of Seneca. Scaliger is also the author of the following works: "De comicis dimensionibus" (Lyons, 1539); "Exotericarum exercitationum de subtilitate ad H. Cardanum" (Paris, 1537; Basle, 1560); "Poemata" (Geneva, 1574; Heidelberg, 1600); "Epistolae et Orationes " (Leyden, 1600). He translated into Latin Aristotle's "Natural History" (Toulouse 1619), the "Insomniae" of Hippocrates, and wrote commentaries on the treatises on plants of Theophrastes and

    From Octavian to Augustus:
Images Illustrating His Rise to Power
During the decades leading up to Julius Caesar's dictatorship, Roman coinage took on an increasingly personal character, displaying designs with a clear propagandistic message promoting the family or the political favorites of the moneyer who struck the coins for that year. Types commemorated victories, beneficent legislation, famous ancestors, and the like. The trend reached an extreme in early 44 BC when Caesar, stockpiling money to pay for his imminent Parthian campaign, had coins struck with his own portrait, a first for the official coinage of Rome (the images of living Romans had appeared on coins at the periphery of the empire as early as ca. 196 BC, but never on Rome's official state issues). This move was counted as one among many which showed Caesar's tendency towards monarchical behavior and which resulted in his assassination. Far from removing this problem of self-aggrandizement on coinage, however, Caesar's death left the field open for a wide array of would-be rulers who copied the trend to promote themselves, first among the soldiers who supported their causes (for pay and rewards of booty), secondly among the rest of the populace. Thus, we have today a most interesting numismatic documentation of portraits and propagandistic messages of the men who struggled for power in the political vacuum left by Caesar's sudden departure; more to the point, we also can trace the rise to power of Octavian, who ultimately became Rome's first Emperor, known otherwise as Augustus. These are presented below.

When Caius Julius Caesar was born, the leading man in Rome was Caius Marius , who had saved the Roman republic several years before by defeating two Germanic tribes, the Teutones (102) and the Cimbri (101). The connections between the Marius and the Julius families were very close: Marius was married to a sister of Caesar's father. So, Caesar belonged to an influential family. His contemporaries called Marius a popularis . It is unclear what this label means (for some speculations, see below ), but modern historians tend to believe that it means that Marius tried to reach his political aims through the People's Assembly. The opposite group, the optimates , played the political game in the Senate.

History of the Hellenistic and Roman World
On the following pages, you will find a number of articles describing various events and personalities of the Hellenistic and Roman world in the time period 300 BCE to 1 CE. I have been very pleased by the great popularity of the (former) Geocities website which now - for the second time - has caused me to move the website to a new domain. With any luck, this will be the last time I will need to do so. I hope this website will be able to continue to serve, inspire and help people looking for information about the Hellenistic and Roman worlds for many years to come. Michael A.

    - A Biography The most famous Roman general and statesman, conqueror of Gaul (58 - 50 BCE) who brought about the effective end of the Republic. As dictator of Rome, he launched a series of political and social reforms before he was assasinated by a group of nobles in the Senate House on the Ides of March.
