JULIUS CAESAR Roman General and Ruler Full Name: Gaius Julius Caesar Caesar is remembered as one of history's greatest generals and a key ruler of the Roman empire. As a young man he rose through the administrative ranks of the Roman republic, accumulating power until he was elected consul in 59 BCE. Over the next 15 years he led Roman armies against enemies abroad, especially in Gaul, while fighting Pompey and others for political control at home. In 45 B.C.E. he reached his ultimate success, being named dictator of Rome for life. That rule was short-lived: the next year he was stabbed to death in the Senate by a group led by his follower Marcus Junius Brutus. Caesar's life and death were dramatized in the William Shakespeare play Julius Caesar , with Caesar's famous death line: "Et tu, Brute? Then fall Caesar!"
Extra credit : The ruling titles Kaiser and Czar are derived from the name of Caesar... Caesar had a famous romance with Egyptian ruler Cleopatra , and he fathered her son Caesarion... One of Caesar's trusted generals was Marc Antony , who became a lover and ally of Cleopatra after Caesar's death... Caesar's adopted heir was

This supplemental unit was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP) and the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA).
This unit was designed for use with 10th grade English classes. The unit affords practice in analyzing and discussing character in a written composition (Student Activity 1), in discussing how decisions based on character move the plot of a drama forward (Student Activity 2), in speculating on leadership skills (Student Activity 3), and in searching for alternatives to violence in government leadership changeovers (Student Activity 4).
Goals and Objectives During this unit, students:

  • Gain research skills, specific to the World Wide Web
  • Employ strategies to analyze character in literature (Student Activities 1 and 3)
  • Gain experience in developing a comparison/contrast essay (Student Activity 1)
  • Employ strategies to describe plot in literature (Student Activity 2)
  • Gain experience in researching a political system and writing an argumentative essay (Student Activity 4)

In war, events of importance are
    the result of trivial causes.
It is easier to find men who will
volunteer to die, than to find
those who are willing to endure pain with patience. I have lived long enough both in years and in accomplishments. The die is cast. Alea jacta est. If you must break the law, do it to seize power: in all other cases observe it. The whole of Gaul is divided into three parts. Veni, vidi, vici. - I came, I saw, I conquered. As a rule, men worry more about what they can't see than about what they can. All bad precedents began as justifiable measures.

Veni, vidi, vici. 'I came, I saw, I conquered.' These are the words of the man who changed the course of Greco-Roman history.
Julius Caesar was born in Rome on July 12 or 13, in the year 100 B.C.. His father Gaius Caesar, died when Caesar was 16 years old, and it was his mother Aurelia, who proved to be quite influential in his life. Caesar's family was part of Rome's original aristocracy, called patricians, although they were not rich or particularly influential. At the time of Caesar's birth, the number of patricians was small, and their status no longer provided political advantage.
To obtain distinction for himself and his family, a Roman nobleman sought election to public office. In 86 B.C., Caesar was appointed flamen dialis with the help of his uncle by marriage, Gaius Marius. The position was one of an archaic priesthood and held no power. Nevertheless, it identified Caesar with extremist politics. Ceasar committed himself further to the radical side when he married Cornelia, daughter of Lucius Cornelius Cinna in 84 B.C..
In 82 B.C., Caesar was ordered to divorce his wife by Lucius Cornelius Sulla, an enemy of the radicals. Caesar refused and prudently left Rome for military service in Asia and Cilicia. He returned in 78 B.C. when Sulla died and began his political career as a prosecuting advocate. Caesar then traveled to Rhodes to study rhetoric and did not return to Rome until 73 B.C. During his journey to Rhodes, Caesar was captured by pirates. While in captivity, Caesar convinced his captors to raise his ransom, which increased his prestige. He then raised a naval force, overcame his captors, and had them crucified.

    Caesar, Julius (c.100 - 44 BC)
    Roman leader
A rousing orator, brilliant general, and cunning politician, Julius Caesar was one of the dominant figures of Western civilization, paving the way for the Roman Empire.
Coming from a powerful family, he rose to a position of influence within the Roman political establishment. After several years of service in the Senate, at age 40 Caesar formed a ruling alliance with Pompey and Marcus Licinius Crassus. He then conducted successful campaigns in the north that brought Gaul under Roman control.
After the death of Crassus and the dissolution of the triumvirate, Caesar fought Pompey in a struggle for supremacy. In 48 BC he was elected dictator of Rome, improving provincial administration, extending citizenship, alleviating Rome's debt, and instituting the Julian calendar.
Despite his great talent and charisma, the autocratic Caesar was regarded as a threat to the Roman Republic, and in 44 BC he was assassinated by conspirators. His death opened the way for other would-be autocrats and actually hastened Rome's transition into an empire ruled by family dynasties.

The teacher may have each student working as an individual or opt to form groups wherein students are responsible for completing various parts of each activity, e. g., in Activity 4, one student may research Roman government while another may research historical aspects of Julius Caesar as well as those aspects of Caesar illuminated in Shakespeare's drama. Both students read the play and write one joint composition.
