About Catching Light
Byer opens her book with a ten-poem sequence, In the Photograph Gallery , composed of verses she wrote while first viewing the Evelyn exhibit. "'Who is she?' / a child hanging on to her mother's skirt / asks, as if she is frightened / by what she sees. 'Just a little old lady,' / her mother soothes. / 'That's all she is. '" By placing Evelyn herself in the gallery to respond to the photos, and hear that exchange, Byer opens the door into the inner life of this "little old lady."
Catching Light is a profound inquiry into aging and how one remarkable woman faces it, sings to it, mocks it, rebels against it, and ultimately embraces it.

Byer, Kathryn Stripling My Beautiful Grandmother
Genre Poem Keywords Aging Body Self-Image Death and Dying Disease and Health ... Pain Summary The title and first line, "My Beautiful Grandmother / died ugly," set the tone for contrasts that continue throughout the poem: health and illness, beauty and ugliness, youth and age, life and death, staying and leaving. The poem initially describes the grandmother as aged, ready to die, anorexic and in such pain that she required six years of morphine. The needles used to inject medication, which left her arms bruised "black and blue" are contrasted with her previous embroidery needles, which she had used to stitch "pink cornucopias / on square after square of white cotton." The grandmother was ready to die for a long time, to a place and time apartto the mountains and to her spirited youth, when she was "dashing" and her "mind was as quick / as the stitch of a sparrow's wing." The poem continues with the compression of time yet marking the effects of time: old love letters to the grandmother crumble "like stale bread" in the hands of the granddaughter. The poem concludes with a short stanza alluding to difficulties that the granddaughter experienced leaving the Georgia town where her "beautiful grandmother stayed."

FICTION - The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd (Viking )
Set in 1964 South Carolina, Kidd's first novel centers on the coming of age of 14 year old Lily Owens. Raised by Rosaleen, her black "stand-in mother", Lily struggles with the unknown factors of her mother's killing and the harsh discipline of her father. After an all too believable racial confrontation Lily and Rosaleen leave town together, each seeking a new freedom. They find that freedom and more -power, mercy, friendship- among a family of beekeeping sisters. What could be trite is not, and the book leaves you feeling better about the world. NON FICTION - My Losing Season by Pat Conroy (Doubleday)
Pat Conroy's true, honest autobiography, is mean, ugly, and heartbreaking. I loved it so much I now want to re-read every book this amazing writer has given the world of literature. CHILDREN - Hoot by Carl Hiaasen (Knopf)
Well known author and acclaimed Miami Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen, has written a great novel for the middle reader. Hoot is the story of a new kid in Coconut Grove who discovers burrowing owls threatened by yet another commercial development. Combining his slightly twisted imagination and trademark humor, with his clear cut values of personal integrity and ecological preservation, Hiaasen has mastered yet another genre.

Nationally recognized poet Kathryn Stripling Byer read from her forthcoming collection, Catching Light , which is due from LSU Press in Spring 2002. As if that were not wonderful enough, photographer Louanne Watley , whose "Evelyn" series of photographs is the source of inspiration for the poems in Catching Light , was also on hand to show slides and discuss their creative collaboration. Byer has published three previous books of poetry: The Girl in the Midst of the Harvest (Associated Writing Programs Award Series by Texas Tech Press, 1986); Wildwood Flower (LSU Press, 1992 - Lamont Prize from the Academy of American Poets); and Black Shawl (LSU Press, 1998 - Roanoke Chowan and Brockman-Campbell Prizes). In awarding the Brockman-Campbell Prize, a judge noted: " Black Shawl is a spirited and spirit-haunted book of poems that interlaces folklore and cultural mythology with the myths of the self. Byer sings in her own clear and distinctive voice, but she also speaks in many of these poems through the persona of the ancient woman, a kind of Crazy Jane of Appalachia. These poems are at once old and new, archtypal and freshly minted." Kathryn Stripling Byer was raised on a farm in southwest Georgia, graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, and took an M.F.A. from UNC-Greensboro, where she studied with Allen Tate, Fred Chapell, and Robert Watson. Her poems and essays have appeared in
