B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) American novelist, creator of the world famous character of Tarzan, one of the indispensable icons of popular culture. Burroughs also published science fiction and crime novels, some 26 books dealt with the Apeman. Critics have considered Burroughs's fiction often crudely written and chauvinist. His books, however, are still widely read and usually more interesting than the films. It is true that Burroughs often portrayed Africans, Arabs or Asians as evil or comic, but the stories also contain several elements that have kept them 'politically correct': Waziri warriors are brave, and his cave girls Nadara and Dejah Thoris, the princesses of Mars, are courageous and resourceful characters. "As the body rolled to the ground Tarzan of the Apes placed his foot upon the neck of his lifelong enemy, and raising his eyes to the full moon threw back his fierce young head and voiced the wild and terrible cry of his people." (from Tarzan of the Apes Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a prosperous family. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran. To glamourize his own origins, Burroughs has claimed that he was born in Peking at the time that his father was military advicer to the Empress of China, and lived there, in the Forbidden City, until Burroughs was ten years old. Burroughs attended several private schools, including the Michigan Military Academy, Orchar Lake (1892-95), where he was instructor and assistant commandant (1895-96). He served in the 7th Cavalry in the Arizona Territory (1896-97) and Illinois Reserve Militia (1918-19). During this period he met and heard stories of men who had fought the Sioux and Apache. After his military career Burroughs was owner of a stationery store in Pocatello, Idaho (1898), had dealings with the American Battery Company, Chicago (1899-03). In 1900 he married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934); they had two sons and one daughter).

EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS OUTLAW OF TORN
Introduction by David Bruce Bozarth
The Outlaw of Torn, set in 13th century England, was Burroughs' first historical fiction work. His second was I Am A Barbarian, a tale of ancient Rome, which was published after his death in 1950.
To My Friend
JOSEPH E. BRAY CHAPTER I HERE is a story that has lain dormant for seven hundred years. At first it was suppressed by one of the Plantagenet kings of England. Later it was forgotten. I happened to dig it up by accident. The accident being the relationship of my wife's cousin to a certain Father Superior in a very ancient monastery in Europe. He let me pry about among a quantity of mildewed and musty manuscripts and I came across this. It is very interestingpartially since it is a bit of hitherto unrecorded history, but principally from the fact that it records the story of a most remarkable revenge and the adventurous life of its innocent victimRichard, the lost prince of England. In the retelling of it I have left out most of the history. What interested me was the unique character about whom the tale revolvesthe visored horseman whobut let us wait until we get to him. It all happened in the thirteenth century, and while it was happening it shook England from north to south and from east to west; and reached across the channel and shook France. It started, directly, in the London palace of Henry III, and was the result of a quarrel between the King and his powerful brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester.

Books by Edgar Rice Burroughs
ERB, as his fans come to know him, had an incredible literary imagination. And following in the footsteps of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells , he wrote his own incredible series of fantastic adventures set in deepest Africa, as well as the worlds of Mars, Venus and beyond. He's best known as the creator of Tarzan, one of fiction's most enduring heroes, as attested by the numerous movies, and TV series featuring the character. But to science fiction enthusiasts, he's known for creating one of the best space opera epics of all time, the Martian series, along with its strong-armed, eternal hero of John Carter. A Princess of Mars is ERB's first book, and it's a great place to start. Southern gentleman John Carter is mysteriously transported to the angry red planet upon his "death" where he finds a dying world embroiled in warfare and a mutual distrust of its races. Over the series, Carter fights to keep the planet alive while uniting the factions. If you like A Princess of Mars , you'll soon be hunting down the other tales of this series, such as The Gods of Mars Warlord of Mars , and possibly the best one of the series The Chessmen of Mars If you're a Tarzan fan, you have to start with

Edgar Rice Burroughs nasce nel 1875 a Chicago.
Under the Moons of Mars Normal Bean (Tipo Qualsiasi).

    Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs, the writer who created Tarzan and fantastic tales of science fiction, was born February 23, 1875 in Chicago, Illinois to Major George Tyler Burroughs and Mary Evaline (Zieger). Edgar Burroughs unsuccessfully pursued a series of careers until he was 35 years old: soldier, cowboy, salesman, and other singular interests. It wasn't until his Oak Park years, between 1914 and 1919, that Burroughs became a successful author. While living in Chicago and Oak Park, Burroughs created many of his most memorable characters. The first Tarzan book, Tarzan the Ape Man , was completed in May 1912. Burroughs was also reknown for writings including the "John Carter of Mars" books, magazine stories, and many other published works. Burroughs captivated many children and adults alike with his imaginative tales. Today his legacy lives on in print film video and online Burroughs' ERB, Inc.
