BURKE, Edmund. Two autograph letters, signed, to Charles Townshend, the first dated 17 October 1771, from Fludyer Street, the second dated 24 November 1771, from Beaconsfield, both concerning the widespread, false belief that Burke was the author of the Letters of Junius. 2 pp. and 1¼ pp., 4to, in very good condition. The Letters of Junius, which appeared in the Public Advertiser between January 1769 and January 1772, were a series of polemics - extremely deft and stylish, but often scurrilous too - against the Duke of Grafton's administration and eventually against the King himself. Not until the 1960s was it proved conclusively that they were written by Philip Francis, a key protagonist in the epic controversy over Warren Hastings's Bengal administration.
In the first of the present letters, 'Burke is answering one from Townshend on 15 October ... in which he described a conversation he had had with Fitzherbert about the authorship of the Junius letters. Burke was widely rumoured (and hints had begun to appear frequently in the Press) to be the author, and he suspected that Fitzherbert was helping to spread the charge. According to Townshend, Fitzherbert "seemed very chagrined at this report, and protested, that he had never said anything that could be construed to charge you with having the least hand either directly or indirectly in writing or publishing the letters of Junius"' (editorial note in the Cambridge Correspondence). Burke replies:
The second letter was 'written in reply to a letter from ... Townsend of 20 November 1771 ... in which he mentioned a difficulty he had met in clearing Burke's reputation from the imputation that he was the author of Junius's letters - the fact that Burke had "never positively declared in express terms that you were neither directly nor indirectly engaged in the publication ..." He suggested that Burke might wish to make such a declaration to him' (editorial note in the Cambridge Correspondence). Burke writes:

I T MAY NOT BE UNNECESSARY to inform the reader that the following Reflections had their origin in a correspondence between the Author and a very young gentleman at Paris, who did him the honor of desiring his opinion upon the important transactions which then, and ever since, have so much occupied the attention of all men. An answer was written some time in the month of October 1789, but it was kept back upon prudential considerations. That letter is alluded to in the beginning of the following sheets. It has been since forwarded to the person to whom it was addressed. The reasons for the delay in sending it were assigned in a short letter to the same gentleman. This produced on his part a new and pressing application for the Author's sentiments. The Author began a second and more full discussion on the subject. This he had some thoughts of publishing early in the last spring; but, the matter gaining upon him, he found that what he had undertaken not only far exceeded the measure of a letter, but that its importance required rather a more detailed consideration than at that time he had any leisure to bestow upon it. However, having thrown down his first thoughts in the form of a letter, and, indeed, when he sat down to write, having intended it for a private letter, he found it difficult to change the form of address when his sentiments had grown into a greater extent and had received another direction. A different plan, he is sensible, might be more favorable to a commodious division and distribution of his matter.

EDMUND BURKE .............. BIOGRAPHY .............. Burke, Edmund (1729-1797) British Statesman and Political Thinker: Edmund Burke was a leading British philosopher and statesman who eventually supported the patriots in their bid for independence. Burke initially advocated parliamentary supremacy over the colonies, but only on terms acceptable to the colonies. Two of his speeches to Parliament later became famous: one on American taxation (1774) and one on conciliation (1775). He suggested a relationship between Britain and her American colonies in which parliamentary sovereignty would be asserted only with the consent of the colonies, and only for purposes which the colonies recognized as being of common interest. After the American victory at Saratoga, however, Burke asserted that the American colonies could not be retained.
Burke also wrote books of political and aesthetic philosophy, and was known as an eloquent orator.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Burke, Edmund British Whig politician and political theorist, born in Dublin, Ireland. However, he was a vehement opponent of the French Revolution, which he denounced in Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790), and attacked the suggestion of peace with France in Letters on a Regicide Peace Burke was also the author of A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of our Ideas on the Sublime and Beautiful (1756), on aesthetics. He was a leading figure in the impeachment of the British colonial administrator Warren
