Emma Bull a biographical interlude
Two of Emma Bull's favorite childhood memories are of typing out nonsense words on her parents' black Royal manual, and watching the neighbor mow the lawn. She went to Beloit College, where she majored in English, then moved to Minneapolis, where there are two seasons: Snow removal and road repair. (Or, as it sometimes seems, snow repair and road removal.) There she worked as a freelance journalist and as an editor and graphic designer. She and her husband, Will Shetterly , founded SteelDragon Press to publish comic books and limited edition quality hardcovers. After that, she moved back to her native southern California, where she would've driven with the top down if she'd had a convertible. And now she's living in beautiful Bisbee, Arizona, where she would ride the range if she had a pony. But she does have a great cowboy hat. She's written novels, screenplays, a children's book, and short stories. She and Will are members of the Interstate Writers' Workshop, aka The Scribblies. They're also part of the Sacred Flying House, originators of the Talking Beer (Robert Bly, eat your heart out). Emma and Will taught writing at places like Clarion West in Seattle and the Pima Writers Workshop in Tucson, and conducted writing workshops in Los Angeles.

Why did I read this book?
It had been recommended to me by Sion Arrowsmith , who hadn't read it. Sion's irc nickname is 'sparrow', after the protagonist in this book; when I asked about the reasoning behind this, Sion pointed me at an article about the book (warning: contains spoilers!) to explain the nickname. Fortunately the spoilers didn't make much sense to me when I hadn't read the book, and the timelapse between reading the article and reading the book (lent to Sion by Emmet ) meant that I'd forgotten them all by then anyway. Emma Bull Sorry, but your browser does not have the necessary plug-in to play the midi. If you enjoy sitting under a shady tree on a nice spring day, reading stories with a magical blend of fantasy in the modern day world, then you'll enjoy reading a book or short story written by Emma Bull. She has the ability of bringing the past into the present and making it work. Personally, after having the opportunity of visiting with her at Dragon Con, I think she's a sweetheart. She's a wonderful person with just the right balance of wit and creativity and if you ever get the opportunity to meet her, you'll know what I mean and it's guaranteed you'll leave with a smile that'll last for months. By the way, she's also a terrific singer and musician Emma Bull's Biography Works By Emma Bull Back to Will and Emma's Room Back to the Hallway ... She attended Beloit College in Wisconsin, and received a degree in English literature and composition. Emma's an avid reader and over the years, has probably read a zillion-in-one books. When she was younger, it didn't take her long to realize that novels were written by plain, ordinary people and that's when she decided she could write one, too!

Diana Gabaldon Laurell K. Hamilton David Eddings Chelsea Quinn Yarbro ... links I fell in love with Emma Bull's first book War for the Oaks , and stupidly lent it to a friend who was (unbeknownst to me) a book thief. It was nearly three years before I finally found another copy, and then ACE released a reprint - I bought three. And, my online name is from this book - Phouka. (See, I knew you wanted to know where it came from!) I think the reason I really loved the book was that it was set in Minneapolis, where I grew up, and I recognized the places in the book. I've been to the bars, the parks, and the café's in the story. Of course, I never ran into any of the Sidhe, but... I've read her other books (most notably Finder) and enjoyed them immensely, although not as completely as I did my first foray into her works. My only complaint is that the phouka is described several times in the book as looking like Prince (or the "Artist formerly known as Prince, whatever that is!) and I couldn't get that picture out of my head. Ugh. Well, not that Prince is unattractive, but it was not the picture that I had in my head.
