WILLIAM BRADFORD by Dorothy Honiss Kelso William Bradford was born in 1590 in the Yorkshire farming community of Austerfield, England. In his early childhood, both parents died. The boy was shuttled among several relatives, never staying long anywhere. Click HERE When the congregation learned that the king, James I, intended to "harry them from the land," they fled to the Netherlands. Here, for 12 years, first in Amsterdam and then in Leiden, Bradford and the rest of the exiles lived and worshipped according to their beliefs. The church, now led by the charismatic John Robinson, faced other problems. WILLIAM BRADFORD Puritan of Plymouth William Bradford, born in 1590, was the only son of a yeoman family (middle class farmers) in Austerfield, England, but his parents died while he was still quite young. A sickly boy, he learned to read and loved learning. At age sixteen, he heard a controversial preacher teach the "Puritan Principles" of personal holiness and separation of church and state. Defying his uncles, who forbade him to associate with these "Separatists," William began attending a Puritan congregation at Scrooby, where he met Elder William Brewster, who became the father and mentor William had never had. King James I made life difficult for these "reformers." When Brewster and others were arrested and fined for being "disobedient in religion," the Scrooby congregation moved to Leyden, Holland, which promised political and religious freedom. In Leyden, Bradford took advantage of the university library to complete his self-education. At twenty-three, already a respected member of the congregation, he married sixteen-year-old Dorothy May; two years later they had a son, John. But the Puritans were first and foremost Englishmen, and readily left Holland when the opportunity came to establish an English colony in the New World. He was a deeply pious, self-educated man who had learned several languages, including Hebrew, in order to "see with his own eyes the ancient oracles of God in their native beauty." His participation in the migration to Holland and the Mayflower voyage to Plymouth, and his duties as governor, made him ideally suited to be the first historian of his colony. His history, Of Plymouth Plantation (1651), is a clear and compelling account of the colony's beginning. His description of the first view of America is justly famous: Being thus passed the vast ocean, and a sea of troubles...they had now no friends to welcome them nor inns to entertain or refresh their weatherbeaten bodies; no houses or much less towns to repair to, to seek for succor...savage barbarians...were readier to fill their sides with arrows than otherwise. And for the reason it was winter, and they that know the winters of that country know them to be sharp and violent, and subject to cruel and fierce storms...all stand upon them with a weatherbeaten face, and the whole country, full of woods and thickets, represented a wild and savage hue. William Bradford: Governor of Plymouth Colony William Bradford, the second governor of Plymouth colony elected to fill the place of the deceased John Carver, was responsible for the infant colony's success through great hardships. The Pilgrims were part of a strain of Puritanism known as Separatism, which denoted the aim to completely secede from the Church of England. The Pilgrims held to a Congregational rather than a Presbyterian form of church government. Not all of the Plymouth colony were Christians, however, and some spoke of using their liberty in defiance of the Pilgrims. Unless they could be held together in unity there was little hope they would survive. The success of the Plymouth was based on covenantalism - the belief that men could form compacts or covenants in the sight of God as a basis for government without the consent of a higher authority. The church of the Pilgrims was already bound by a strict mutual covenant. But to include those outside of the church, a civil compact was drawn up - the constitution and foundation of a Christian democratic republic in the New World. The Mayflower Compact acknowledged the right of everyone who signed it to share in the making and administering of laws and the right of the majority to rule. It was the constitution of a pure democracy, the principle of Congregational church government applied to the state. This was all the law they had for several years. It worked because they chose Christians as their leaders and all understood that they were to be self-governing under the moral law of God.

In 1708 Anne granted four fairs to the earl of Bridgewater, and in 1886 the borough had a new charter of incorporation under a mayor, 4 aldermen and 12 councillors under the Municipal Corporations Act of 1882. Camden (Brit. p. 430) says that Brackley was formerly a famous staple for wool. It first sent members to parliament in 1547, and continued to send two representatives till disfranchised by the Reform Act of 1832. The town formerly had a considerable woollen and lace-making trade. His fame is due to a treatise on the laws and customs of England which is sufficiently described elsewhere (see ENGLISH LAW). The main part of it seems to have been compiled between 1250 and 1256; but apparently it is an unfinished work. This may be due to the fact that when he ceased to be a member of the king’s central court Bracton was ordered to surrender certain judicial records which he had been using as raw material. Even though it be unfinished his book is incomparably the best work produced by any English lawyer in the middle ages. The treatise was published in 1569 by Richard Tottel.
