  • 2nd Generation Christian Bowers Jr. was Born ca 1769 and Died 3 Feb 1830 in Green Co., TN. He married Elizabeth Andes on 26 Nov 1795. They had nine children. Christian's marriage license to Elizabeth was signed in German. He was Lutheran as was the case with most German immigrants. Judging from the names of his sisters husbands they were likely reared in German settlements marrying men of common background and language. Christian is first found in the 1810 Shenandoah Co., VA census record with his wife and two females less than 10 years old. His household appears numerically close to that of his father in the census so we can assume they liver very near each other.

    BOWERS MSS. II
The Bowers mss. II, 1893-1960, are the papers of Claude Gernade Bowers, 1878-1958, ambassador. They consist of correspondence with diplomats politicians, literary figures, artist, high ranking government officials, historians, orators, journalists, editors, publishers, lawyers, bankers, and educators; diaries, speeches, and newspaper clippings. As a very young man he found his two greatest interests in life, politics and history. In 1891 the family moved to Indianapolis and in Tomlinson Hall he heard the greatest American orators. The earliest letters in the collection are from prominent orators in answer to letters he had written asking for advice on oratory. The correspondence for the first thirty years of the twentieth century relates primarily to Indiana and United States politics. During his ambassadorship to Spain and Chile he was also kept well informed of the political situation in the United States through letters from friends. Between 1933 and 1939, the correspondence deals with events in Spain. At the time of the Spanish Civil war, Bowers wrote long and detailed letters to Cordell Hull about the situation in Spain. From 1939 to 1953, he was ambassador to Chile. Soon after his arrival war was declared in Europe and "South America became a diplomatic battlefield." The letters during this period reveal the activities of the Germans and communists in South America, the influence Juan Domingo Peron exerted in the Latin American countries, the demands of the laboring classes, the problems of the copper industry, as well as the economic and political situation in Chile.

    Professor Emeritus
Edgar Bowers was born in Rome, Georgia, on March 2nd, 1924. He lived much of his childhood near Stone Mountain, outside of Atlanta, where his father owned a nursery. During World War II, Edgar left college to serve in the Army's Counter-Intelligence Corps where, immediately after the war, he worked in the de-Nazification program headquartered in Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. For a portion of that time he was actively involved in the search for Martin Bormann. Much of Bowers's powerful first volume of poems, The Form of Loss , came out of his experiences in Germany during this time. Bowers completed work on his B. A. at the University of North Carolina in 1947, and sometime shortly thereafter made the decision to become a poet. In earnest of this, he enrolled at Stanford in the fall of 1947, specifically to study with the brilliant and controversial poet and critic, Yvor Winters, who became his mentor and remained a powerful figure both in his life and in his thinking about poetry. Bowers received his Ph.D. from Stanford in 1953, taught briefly at Duke and Harpur College, and then became an Assistant Professor at UCSB in 1958, where he taught in the English Department until his retirement as Full Professor in 1991. Edgar Bowers was an extraordinarily dedicated poet, which is one of the reasons why his poetic output is not as extensive as that of others. He worked very hard on his craft, often spending months revising a poem until it had the weight and density and complex rhythmical finish that were among his trademarks as a poet. The result is a series of volumes, spaced at wide intervals, that, in their cumulative effect, steadily drew the attention of a larger audience so that by now they have become a permanent part of the American poetic canon. His first book
