Two Decades of David Bottoms' Poetry

~E DWARD B YRNE
T HE R OLLING C IRCLE: D AVID B OTTOMS' A RMORED H EARTS AND V AGRANT G RACE
The scenes depicted in Bottoms’ poems have always carried
a strong sense of authenticity and credibility as they carefully
catalog even the most ordinary items in everyday life, yet
present them in a lyrical language that lends an elegance
to everything that matters, especially those objects too often overlooked because of their commonplace appearances, but that are nevertheless essential.
E ver since David Bottoms’ first book, Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump, was selected by Robert Penn Warren for the Academy of American Poets’ Walt Whitman Award in 1979, readers have come to expect certain traits or patterns of action in his poetry: a clear and credible voice offering accurate and evocative description of nature, as well as the natural activities of everyday existence, often mixed with wit and irony, as he searches for understanding of the higher spiritual significance among the commonplace or ordinary events of life. With his retrospective Armored Hearts: Selected and New Poems

Jane Hill Department of English State University of West Georgia Carrollton, GA 30118 The Fisher King on the Edge of Appalachia: David Bottoms and the Reconfiguration of Eliot’s Waste Land [Paper delivered at the Appalachian Studies Association, Unicoi, GA, 15 Mar. 2002] The two poems that close Armored Hearts , David Bottoms’s 1995 volume of selected and new poems, “My Perfect Night” and “Allatoona Evening,” characterize with a profoundly simple beauty the end of his poetic persona’s quest for spiritual serenity in the postmodern reality of his rapidly changing North Georgia world. Bottoms defines his “perfect” night as one in which “. . . I follow a trail by the river, / and my shadow on the water / looks deep and alive” (139). By positioning his poetic protagonist on a trail by a river and by emphasizing his shadow and its vivacity, Bottoms invites readers to remember the closing image of T. S. Eliot’s twentieth-century epic The Waste Land , in which Eliot’s protagonist, a modernist embodiment of the Fisher King of Arthurian legend, finds himself along the banks of London’s Thames, waiting patiently for signs of fertility and renewal to emerge from the river’s post-World War I sterility and decay. Like Eliot’s protagonist, the characteristic first-person speaker of Bottoms’s poems is a man who has lived through a period of enormous social upheaval and cultural revision. For the Bottoms protagonist, the era is the 1950s and ‘60s, and his geographic position is not London, but the southern rim of Appalachia. Middle-aged by the time “Allatoona Evening” articulates his ultimate response to having lived through his own version of a wasted land, this speaker takes his cue from the lake’s waters. He hears its call as an admonition “to lay down / [his] anger” and to realize that “Nothing is more beautiful than [his] emptiness” (140). These images—of anger and emptiness—share the decidedly guarded nature of the optimism that ends Eliot’s poem. At the end of

Sea Ray and Balsa Core Bottoms
by David Pascoe
T he debate over the use of balsa cores in boat bottoms seems recently to have come to an end when, in October, 2002, Powerboat Reports ran a piece entitled "Core Complaints". Purporting to be an editorial, when in fact the piece ran five pages and is a full-blown article, including a response from Sea Ray to a PBR inquiry for Sea Ray's response to allegations of serious problems with the use of balsa core in the bottom of their boats 40 to 55 feet built from 1995 to 2002. In their response Sea Ray, as one might anticipate, goes on the aggressive defense, defending th use of balsa in boat bottoms by (1) blaming some marine surveyors for "providing a lot of incorrect information during the process"; (2) claiming that balsa is widely used by many boat builders (without specifying where they use it); (3) that balsa is "tried and tested [by Sea Ray]"; (4) that balsa core is "recognized, certified around the world [by] Lloyds Register of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, American Bureau of Shipping ...." and others.

David Bottoms in the Suburbs
Southern Quarterly 37.3-4 (Spring-Summer 1999): 80-84. guy's view of nature in the suburbs is to have ducks ; the poet's view is to let the turtles kill. Both men are caught in homemade manipulations of the environment for very temporary results. Ulee's Gold , said it was the writer's job "to explore what's left of place when it's not all there anymore." He was referring to his own background as half first-generation American and half long-term resident of North Florida. His point was both pragmatic and imaginative (speaking as an artist), morally responsive, but reluctantly so (speaking as a citizen). He would give us people living incaught inplaces where flux is pervasive, where unanticipated cultures crop up and grow, shifting, breaking old soil, riving old pathways and settled hearts; those people are the source of the writer's strength, the source and treasure-house of humane adaptability. Nunez would not argue that the synthesis is easy nor that it is universally good. His comment clearly implies some regret at what may have been lost ("what's left of place when it's not all there anymore"), but his perspective as an artist has deepened as he has assimilated others' experiences into his own. nowadays is unlike Thoreau's in mid-nineteenth-century New England. That is, Thoreau's "desperate men" were struggling with tried-and-true spiritual conflicts, the kind that pits flesh against spirit, selfishness against social responsibility, Gradgrindian "Facts!" against the claims of the imaginative soul. But they were doing it within a relatively homogeneous society, certainly by our standards. Thoreau's protests were mounted against the sorts of dangers that romantics always mount againstinstitutional power, doctrinal tyrannies, materialism, the simple staving-off of mortality as we wind along, more and more distant from innocently insightful childhood, from our finer instincts that might be fostered by poetical attention to nature.
