Baldwin also wrote three plays, a children's storybook, and a book of short stories. He gained fame with his first novel, GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN (1953), a story of hidden sins, guilt, and religious torments. In this and subsequent works Baldwin fused autobiographical material with analysis of social injustice and prejudices. Several of his novels dealt with homosexual liaisons. "If we do not now dare everything, the fulfillment of that prophecy, re-created from the Bible in song by a slave, is upon us: God gave Noah the rainbow sigh, No more water, the fire next time! " (from The Fire Next Time James Baldwin was born in Harlem, New York City, as the son of a domestic worker. Illegitimate, he never knew his own father and was brought up in great poverty. When he was three, his mother married a factory worker, a hard and cruel man, who also was storefront preacher. Baldwin adopted the surname from his stepfather, who died eventually in a mental hospital in 1943. In his childhood Baldwin was a voracious reader. When he was about twelve his first story appeared in a church newspaper. At the age of 17 Baldwin left his home. After graduation from high school, he worked in several ill-paid jobs and started his literary apprenticeship.

About James Baldwin
James Baldwin was born on August 2, 1924, and educated in New York. His first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain , appeared in 1953 to excellent reviews and immediately was recognized as establishing a profound and permanent new voice in American letters. "Mountain is the book I had to write if I was ever going to write anything else," he remarked. Baldwin's play The Amen Corner was first performed at Howard University in 1955 (it was staged commercially in the 1960s), and his acclaimed collection of essays Notes of a Native Son , was published the same year. A second collection of essays, Nobody Knows My Name , was published in 1961 between his novels Giovanni's Room (1956) and Another Country The appearance of The Fire Next Time in 1963, just as the civil rights movement was exploding across the American South, galvanized the nation and continues to reverberate as perhaps the most prophetic and defining statement ever written of the continuing costs of Americans' refusal to face their own history. It became a national bestseller, and Baldwin was featured on the cover of Time magazine. Critic Irving Howe said that The Fire Next Time achieved "heights of passionate exhortation unmatched in modern American writing." In 1964

n the tenth anniversary of his death, Vintage Books and The Modern Library look back on the writing of one of America's greatest writers and most important intellectuals. James Baldwin, through novels, essays, social criticism, and drama, explored the American condition in a new language of unmatched depth, passion, and surgical precision. His works' potential for transforming both the American consciousness and conscience is still just beginning to be registered. Baldwin's excavation of America emerged at a crucial moment in our collective history, and, ten years after his death, the questions he raised continue to resonate with the hope and despairand to take the defining shapehis voice gave to them. JAMES BALDWIN
James Arthur Baldwin was born in Harlem, New York City, Aug. 2, 1924 and died on Nov. 30, 1987. He offered a vital literary voice during the era of civil rights activism in the 1950s and '60s. The eldest of nine children, his stepfather was a minister. At age 14 , Baldwin became a preacher at the small Fireside Pentecostal Church in Harlem. After he graduated from high school, he moved to Greenwich Village. In the early 1940s, he transferred his faith from religion to literature. Critics, however, note the impassioned cadences of Black churches are still evident in his writing. Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953), his first novel, is a partially autobiographical account of his youth. His essay collections [ Notes of a Native Son Nobody Knows My Name (1961), and The Fire Next Time (1963)] were influential in informing a large white audience.
From 1948, Baldwin made his home primarily in the south of France, but often returned to the USA to lecture or teach. In 1957, he began spending half of each year in New York City. His novels include Giovanni's Room (1956), about a white American expatriate who must come to terms with his homosexuality, and

Baldwin Woven into the pattern of violence that exists in racial bigotry is a theme that is gentle, wistful, and poeticBaldwin's apologia for homosexual love. Set in Greenwich Village, Harlem, and France, among other locales, Another Country is a novel of passionssexual, racial, political, artisticthat is stunning for its emotional intensity and haunting sensuality, depicting men and women, blacks and whites, stripped of their masks of gender and race by love and hatred at the most elemental and sublime. In a small set of friends, Baldwin imbues the best and worst intentions of liberal America in the early 1970s. Novel by James Baldwin, published in 1962. The novel is renowned for its graphic portrayal of bisexuality and interracial relations. Shortly after the action begins, Rufus Scott, a black jazz musician, commits suicide, impelling his friends to search for the meaning of his death and, consequently, for a deeper understanding of their own identities. Employing a loose, episodic structure, this work traces the affairsheterosexual and homosexual as well as interracialamong Scott's friends. In its language and structure, the novel is a departure from Baldwin's earlier work.
