Joanna Baillie Literary history has commonly recognized Wordsworth's preface of 1800 as the first text of English Romantic criticism, but Wordsworth was hardly alone, in the last years of the eighteenth century, in making the attempt to confront the political and cultural crisis of Europe in the 1790s with claims for new, transformative kinds of cultural production. Three years before the appearance of the preface, William Godwin (1757-1836) and Joanna Baillie (1762-1851) had each attempted to rethink the progressive political ideas and rhetorics of the radical Enlightenment within the complicating genres of narrative and dramatic representation. Baillie, a Scottish playwright and poet, appealed in her "Introductory Discourse" to Plays on the Passions In this way, Baillie's theory of tragedy was less an attempt to privatize and domesticate formerly public and political controversy than an effort to rethink the mode of dramatic representation as a discourse capable of making explicit the political restaging of private life.(from Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Criticism)

JOANNA BAILLIE
THE chough and crow to roost are gone,
The owl sits on the tree,
Like infant charity.
The wild-fire dances on the fen,
The red star sheds its ray;
Uprouse ye then, my merry men!
Both child and nurse are fast asleep,
And closed is every flower,
And winking tapers faintly peep
Shrink on their murky way;
Uprouse ye then, my merry men! Nor board nor garner own we now, Nor roof nor latchàed door, Nor kind mate, bound by holy vow Noon lulls us in a gloomy den, And night is grown our day; Uprouse ye then, my merry men! And use it as ye may. Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Injuries put javelin's friendly rivals in doubt for Olympics

KERRY O'BRIEN: Whether you're caught up in Olympic fever or not, if you saw our story on Monday night featuring two of Australia's best track and field Olympic medal chances javelin throwers Louise Currey and Joanna Stone you couldn't help but be moved by their plight at the team selection trials in Sydney this week.
Both are now in serious doubt because of injury.
Although both these friendly rivals qualified for the Olympics by coming first and second in the trials, Currey tore ligaments in her left knee and Stone aggravated a rib injury.
And Stone at least thinks it was avoidable.
Rebecca Baillie reports.
LOUISE CURREY, '7:30 REPORT', MONDAY: I wouldn't be doing it, if I didn't think I could be an Olympic champion.
JOANNA STONE, '7:30 REPORT', MONDAY: It would be fantastic if the both of us were on the dais come the medal ceremony for the women's javelin.
If we're both there, it would just be awesome.
REBECCA BAILLIE: Earlier this week on the 7:30 Report, Joanna Stone and Louise Currey were brimming with confidence and excited about the prospect of medals at the Sydney Olympics. Louise Currey has already tasted Olympic success, winning a medal as Louise McPaul at Atlanta.
