"Archie Randolph Ammons was born in 1926 on his family's small farm near Whiteville, North Carolina. It was a subsistence farm, as he notes on 'Poets in Person,' and growing up in the country during the Great Depression gave him not only an intimate acquaintance with the works of nature but also a keen sense of the precarious nature of existence." -Joseph Parisi

A.R. Ammons’s Austrian Aesthetic
by Myles Kantor Unlike so many poets who genuflect to the State, A.R. Ammons is refreshingly iconoclastic when it comes to government and the arts. When the poet and author David Lehman asked in an interview, "How do you feel about government support of the arts," he replied: Ammons’s Austrian features also manifest in his verse. He has said that "Poetry is action," and Sphere: The Form of a Motion instantiates this praxeological conception. (The poem is comprised of one hundred and fifty-five stanzas of quadruple tercets.) Consider this key passage: …the way to write poems is just to start: it’s like learning to walk or swim or ride the bicycle, you just go after it… These lines confer primacy upon individual volition in accord with classical liberal values. No doubt highbrow vampires would recoil from the comparison of poetry to swimming or bicycling. (Hark, benighted masses, verse cannot be equated with plebian pastimes!) Ammons also shuns the chiliastic kitsch that characterizes much contemporary "art." (It corresponds to an evangelical secularism: Save Yourself, Read This Month’s Anointed Artist!) He observes in "Hippie Hop":

Ammons, A. R. Burnout in the Overshoot
Genre Poem Keywords Aging Death and Dying Nature Patient Experience Summary It is autumn. The "first cool spell" has come and made its changes, but life continues: "there's something besides // death and nothingness / even if winter is coming." You can never arrive at death. As you approach death, you diminish, so that in the end, "nothing is equal to nothing." Commentary One of A. R. Ammons' spare, autumnal lyrics. A short poem about dying and what remains: the living in the journey toward death. Source Sumerian Vistas: Poems Publisher W. W. Norton (New York)

A.R. Ammons - 1926 Whiteville By Beth L. Read another essay on Archie Ammons by North Carolina student Rachel Snyder I. Biography In 1926, Archie Randolph Ammons was born and raised on a farm near Whiteville, North Carolina. On the little farm in Whiteville, he received his love for nature, which is so prevalent in his poems. Ammons attended Wake Forest University and there he studied science. Later, he studied English literature for three semesters at the University of California at Berkeley. In World War II, Ammons served aboard an U. S. Navy destroyer in the South Pacific. He went on to work as a high-school principal in North Carolina. He spent twelve years in Southern New Jersey as an executive in a firm that made biological glass; he became a real estate salesman, before he began teaching at Cornell University in 1964. Ammons now lives in Ithaca, New York, where he has lived since 1971. II. Ammons' Poetry A. R. Ammons was born on a farm and there he pondered the scenery around him. This could explain why a large amount of his poetry focuses on nature. Ammons' philosophy is that of a romantic. He looks at nature with wonder and awe and communicates vividly his feelings to the reader. Ammons tends to write poems which are shorter and more to the point. In his poems there is just more going on then the "celebration" of nature.

A. R. Ammons' Life and Career David Lehmann AMMONS, A(rchie) R(andolph) (1926- ) , was born and raised in rural North Carolina, the youngest of a tobacco farmer's three surviving children. Ammons started writing poetry on board a United States destroyer escort in the South Pacific during the Second World War. Upon his return to civilian life he majored in science at Wake Forest University and later did graduate work in English at the University of California, Berkeley. For a year he was principa1 of the tiny elementary school in the island village of Cape Hatteras. For the better part of a decade he worked as a sales executive in his father-in-law's biological glass company on the southern New Jersey shore. Ammons published Ommateum, his first book, at his own expense in 1955; sixteen copies were sold in the next five years. In 1964, the year he joined the English faculty at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, he published his second collection and rather rapidly went from total obscurity to wide acclaim. Collected Poems 1951-1971 (New York, 1972), which won the National Book Award in 1973, capped an astonishingly productive period. Other high honours attended the publication of
