It is nearly 1800 acres of remarkable diversity...huge venerable redwoods, lush stream canyon, open sunny meadows, pine and oak forests and high dry chaparral-covered ridges. Wildlife is plentiful, ranging from the commonly seen jays and squirrels to the more elusive owls and bobcats. The Ohlone Indians lived here in quiet harmony with their surroundings for many thousands of years. The Spanish and Mexican periods left their marks on the land as did American pioneers such as Henry Cowell himself. A hundred years ago much of Santa Cruz County belonged to Henry Cowell. He and his brother came to California from Massachusetts in 1849, drawn by the lure of gold. Like many before them, they soon found that the road to wealth lie not in the goldfields, but in merchant endeavors which supported the miners. They established a successful drayage business in the San Francisco Bay area. His wealth assured, Cowell moved his family to Santa Cruz in 1865. He diversified his business interests by acquiring lumber and limestone operations. By 1886 Cowell was reported to have the highest income in Santa Cruz County and owned 6,500 acres of prime land. This included over 1600 acres adjacent to Welch's Big Trees Resort. Big Trees Resort was the most impressive grove of redwoods along an eight mile stretch of railroad connecting the town of Felton and the city of Santa Cruz. To meet the demands of tourists, Joseph Welch built a resort, complete with cabins, dining hall and dance pavilion. It's visitors included such dignitaries as presidents Benjamin Harrison and Theodore Roosevelt. An interesting sidelight is that in 1899 Andrew Hill took some pictures of redwood trees in Welch's Big Tress Resort. When Mr. Welch demanded that he surrender the photographic plates, Andrew Hill became incensed. This incident sparked the movement which culminated in the creation of Big Basin park.

    Extractions: Fall Creek is the northern unit of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. It is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains west of the town of Felton. The park has 2,390 acres of land which is almost the entire watershed of Fall Creek. It provides for about twenty miles of hiking trails, enough to satisfy the most avid hiker. Most of these trails follow old wagon and logging roads that once led to the busy industrial sites that operated some fifty years ago. The park contains erosion canyons with ridges extending southeasterly from Ben Lomond Mountain. Fall Creek drains the main canyon while side canyons are drained by South Fall Creek, Barrel Mill Creek, and Three Shack Creek. The Ben Lomond Fault runs along the base of the Mountain on which large amounts of high-grade limestone are exposed. Fall Creek is dominated by a second-growth mixed evergreen forest. The redwoods favor the cool, shaded canyons and alluvial flats. A beautiful grove of big-leaf maples can be found near the kilns. The deep, moist, shaded creekside environment yields lush riparian vegetation. Of the 18 different kinds of ferns in Santa Cruz County, 15 are found in Fall Creek. A small chaparral community is found around the parking lot. The limestone deposit on South Fall Creek was first developed in the early 1870s by the IXL Lime Company. The company built the three granite-block kilns and some of the structures and worked the quarry until 1896. In 1900, after 4 years of idleness, the limestone operation was purchased by Henry Cowell and incorporated into the existing Cowell Lime and Cement Co. under the IXL name. The lime produced was high grade and was used extensively throughout California. Large quantities were used for mortar in rebuilding San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake.

The main park area, containing the large, old-growth redwoods, is about 1,750 acres, and the northern area (Fall Creek) is 2,390 acres, with about 20 miles of hiking trails. The tallest tree in the park is about 285 feet tall and about 16 feet wide. The oldest trees in the park are about 1400 to 1800 years old.

Traditionally, collaborations between dancers and composers are rife with problems of hierarchy. Which takes priority, the music or the dance? While the main Henry Cowell park has family-oriented trails, picnic areas, and other facilities, the Fall Creek unit is simpler, more back-to-nature affair. All you'll find are reasonably-marked trails, trail that offer more challenge than most of the those at the main park, without any frills. Before starting this hike you may want to get an official trail map, available at the park headquarters. If you want to go any reasonable distance in Fall Creek you'll need to do some climbing. In my 10 mile loop I climbed up more than 2800 feet, including one pull of over 1200 feet before encountering any noticeable descent. The attached track log follows my hike through Fall Creek. It has waypoints for features and trail junctions that I encountered. It also has waypoints for features in the main park.
