Extractions: Charles Rosen on Elliott Carter Happy Birthday, Elliott Carter The composer Elliott Carter will be eighty on December 11, but these dates might mislead one about his place in history. Pierre Boulez, twenty years younger than Carter, has remarked, "He does not belong in the generation into which he was born; he really belongs to my generation." It is not just that Carter looks like a man two decades younger than his age, or even that he has produced some of his most important works in the past few years. It is rather that he came into prominence along with men a generation younger than he is, that he is most easily considered critically along with the group of composers, above all European, whose work begins in the early 1950s, like Boulez, Stockhausen, and Berio. Born in New York in 1908, Carter spent his childhood in comfortable circumstances. He finished his education at Harvard, majoring in literature, and then went to Paris like so many other American composers to study with Nadia Boulanger. Perhaps equally important for his future development was a trip to Vienna at the age of seventeen, when he acquired the scores of the new Viennese school, including the earliest serial works of Schoenberg. Even more significant was meeting Charles Ives a year before, whom he admired and continued to see often, and who encouraged his ambitions at composition. Carter never succumbed totally to the influence of Ives, and he was never even briefly to try serial composition. Eventually he also cast aside the influence of Stravinsky and the neoclassical school transmitted in Paris by Boulanger. With it, he cast aside the exploitation of folk material that one finds in Aaron Copland and other American followers of the Paris school. Folk material had only appeared halfheartedly in Carter's early works, which are interesting above all for their characteristic and complex rhythmic energy.

Among the most decorated of American composers, Mr. Carter is the recipient of the Gold Medal for Music awarded by the National Institute of Arts and Letters and two Pulitzer Prizes. It is with great pleasure and admiration that G. Schirmer/AMP wishes the composer a joyous 90th year and many happy returns. Celebrations, which were ongoing throughout 1998, continued in December with a recital by Michael Parloff, principal flutist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, at CAMI Hall in New York City. Harpsichordist Gerald Ranck, oboist John Ferrillo, clarinetist Ricardo Morales, bassoonist Whitney Crockett, hornist Joseph Anderer, cellist Fred Sherry, and violinist Philip Setzer assisted Mr. Parloff in a program honoring the composer. Four of Mr. Carter's favorite works were performed including the Woodwind Quintet and Quartet for Flute, Oboe, Cello, and Harpsichord

While not in the easy-listening category, the depth and invention of his textures make him a rewarding composer to explore. Well into his 80s Carter was still writing energetically, travelling and following his many performances round the world. Born in New York City , Elliott Carter was encouraged in his music career by Charles Ives. Carter attended Harvard University where he studied with Walter Piston, and later went to Paris where for three years studying with Nadia Boulanger. He then returned to New York to devote his time to composing and teaching. He returned to the USA and has been writing ever since. His Variations for Orchestra, Symphony of Three Orchestras, and the concertos and string quartets are his best achievements. He has received many awards and honours including the Gold Medal for Music awarded by the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the National Medal of Arts, membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and honorary degrees from many universities. He has received two Pulitzer Prizes and many commissions.
