Extractions: Yukon Colour of the Land Reviewed by Michael Gates The Yukon has a long tradition of photo books, dating back to the Gold Rush. Beginning with the works of photographers such as E.A. Hegg, whose chronicling of the Klondike Stampede made him famous, and the Kinsey brothers, who recorded scenes from the Goldfields early in the century, and more recently, publications by Harrington, Morrow, Von Baich and Towriss, the Yukon, its people and events have been captured in a thousand different poses. None has done so more effectively, than this new publication, displaying the works of Yukon photographer, Richard Hartmier. A 20-year Yukon resident, the ebullient Hartmier, was approached by Lost Moose Publishing of Whitehorse to consider a selection of his photography in book form. Hartmier travels the entire Yukon both under contract and for his own pleasure, continually chronicling its every movement, its mood, its seasons and its people. He has an artist's eye for breathtaking vistas, and a natural eye for detail that keeps one returning to certain photos over and over again, only to discover something new each time. This 122 page book is most notable for the quality of the images. It is clearly the best reproduction of Yukon photographic images that I have seen. In the photo of the new growth after a forest fire (page 43), for example, it is possible to pick out individual stems of grass. So sharp are the details and so accurately and vividly rendered are the colours, that I found myself wanting to step into some of the images.

Soil Geography The Yukon is part of the Canadian cordilleran region that is characterized by mountainous terrain and the presence of glaciers and icefields in some areas. Agriculture is limited to the major river valleys including those of the Yukon, Takhini, Pelly, Stewart and Liard. For the most part, agricultural activity is located on river sediments. In the Takhini and Dezadeash valleys typical agricultural soils are formed on silts and clays deposited in glacial Lake Champagne. Climate The Yukon has a sub-arctic continental climate with temperatures reaching as high as 36.1 degrees in the summer and as low as minus 60 degrees in the winter. The average frost free period ranges from 93 days in the Watson Lake area to 21 days at Haines Junction. As well as varying greatly geographically, frost free period varies substantially from year to year at any location. Long hours of daylight during the summer promote rapid growth which compensates to some extent for the cooler summer temperatures experienced north of 60 degrees latitude.

Extractions: The group will fly to Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon Territory via Vancouver. Once there, the group will pack food and gear in preparation for their ten day canoe trip. The trip covers 700kms of swift moving water between Whitehorse and Dawson City. Along the way many historic sites, accessible only by water, will be visited. Many of these old sites date back 100 years to the Klondike Gold Rush era. Time will also be taken to explore the spectacular flora along the river banks.
