Product Description
Teaching history should not be reciting an endless list of dead men, entombed between the covers of a textbook. Instead, Breaking Away from the Textbook offers a fascinating journey through world history. Not a comprehensive, theory-heavy guide, this book focuses on active classroom activities, methods for students to grapple with humanity's issues, and innovative ways to show students the relevance of the past to the world today. Simply put, this book makes world history fun. Soon, your students will be busy debating, thinking, applying, and learning about information that will stay with them for a lifetime. The key to this wonderful work is its incorporation of various disciplines including art, music, and writing to create a fun and active classroom. Volume 1 covers prehistory to the Renaissance and volume 2 covers the Enlightenment to the 20th century. Includes pictures and drawings, appendices, indexes, maps, and a bibliography. Appropriate for all grade levels. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lackluster
I am wondering if the rave reviewer of this product is related to or paid by the publisher. The lesson ideas were stale and at or below average creativity level. What's more, no support materials are included for any of the "phenomenal" project ideas presented.Examples of ideas include your standard letter writing, map drawing, journal entries, craft creating etc.Yet, not even any included rubrics to aid on prep time (which of course was my purpose in purchasing this book). This book does not decrease prep time and anyone with half a brain could come up with the ideas.Since the entire implementation still rests at the door of the teacher - with or without the book, I say, save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
If you teach high school World History, you need this book! It is full of all sorts of great teaching and content ideas. It has writing activites, map activities, group activities and project ideas. There are research ideas and projects for your advanced students as well. I have used these in both my on-level and advanced classes. It has some great activity and media ideas as well. I have told everyone in my department about it and our campus has ordered a set of this series for our World History teachers. Our American history teachers then ordered the American set for themselves and have gotten some great ideas too. I cannot speak too highly about this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Filled with ideas for the college classroom
Vol. 2 of Pahl's series covers 1600 to the present.See Vol. 1 for his earlier treatment. This book suggests activities, written assignments, and group activities for world history courses. As such it does a very good job.It takes the same dozen or so activities (quick write, pair share, poster power, talk show hosts, etc.) and applies to the Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment, Bolivar and Latin America, and many other topics. The professor can easily find something that appeals to him or her, and try it out.

The book also tries to give a very short history of some of the major events, but this can be found in many other books, as well, and it is understandably sketchy and sadly eurocentric.

Here is one interesting suggestion of the author: Protest Song - create a protest song "focused on the working and living conditions of the poor workers during the industrial revolution" (p. 79).

Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Breaking Away from the Textbook Vol. II
This is a decent book for world history teachers. It is a bit small for the price and several of the activities are repeated over and over again.I will be able to use it with my classes, but not as much as I had hoped to. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, with a few faults
This book is valuable because it encourages teachers to create more student-centered activities, and include some information from outside the textbook. The author could have been more detailed in some of his instructions.

The star rating comes way down because of inaccuracies. When it's clear that some of the text is inaccurate, the ENTIRE text becomes suspect and untrustworthy, and will need to be checked out before teaching. In specific:

The book says, "[Iranian Prime Minister] Mussadegh ... escaped imprisonment by the shah by moving to Paris."In reality, Mosaddeq was imprisoned for three years, and then spent the rest of his life under house arrest in his village.

The book paraphrases Einstein as believing, "nothing could go faster than the speed of light ... because anything as it approaches the speed of light becomes smaller in size until it is pure energy when it reaches the speed of light."Instead, what Einstein said is that when an object approaches the speed of light it gains mass, and would reach infinite mass at the speed of light, requiring an infinite force to move the object. That is what makes exceeding the speed of light impossible, not the fact that the object "becomes pure energy." ... These are excellent resource materials for teachers who like an active and varied classroom experience for the kids.I use them regularly for starting points for my own assignments. These books are far overpriced for what they are, though.I would say that their value is $20-25 per book.I would try to find them used. ... Product Description
"The Teach Yourself History" series offers an alternative to academic historical books, its content being extensive yet extremely accessible and the approach refreshingly different. The books are informative and compelling, and engage the reader from beginning to end. They assume no prior historical knowledge, and are full of anecdotes and details that provide a very personal appeal. "Teach Yourself The First World War" covers all aspects of the war from an international perspective. It follows its key developments, including the build up to the war, how it developed and the role of the different countries involved. It considers many intriguing aspects of the war, including life in the trenches, spies and espionage, the role of women, propaganda, weapons of war and the loss of life. It looks at the impact of the war on those involved and questions why Germany lost the war. The aim throughout is to give you a better understanding of the events that ultimately led to the slaughter of some nine million men and left a further twenty-nine million either wounded or missing. ...
