5-0 out of 5 stars Abundant in Theory and Insight
While I would say that this book is not a "How to" guide, I feel it does an excellent job in explaining the relevant trends as they relate to Women in the workplace. This book provides the FRAMEWORK for solutions with some real world examples of how companies have worked within the mentioned frameworks. If you are looking for outright solutions (or at least a myraid of case studies), I would not recommend this book on its own.

I would even go as far as to analyze the work environment before attempting to implement any of the frameworks mentioned in this text - The "How to Begin Small Wins" section in "A Modest Manifesto for Shattering the Glass Ceiling" has some of the questions that can be used to complete this analysis.

3-0 out of 5 stars some decent info
I initially found this book in a bookstore and did some cursory reading of it before I bought it online.I have to say it seemed more interesting in the store. The book is a collection of articles published by Harvard Business School. Some articles are more 'readable' than others.- But if you're desperate to find a book that at least addresses some of the many issues women face in the business world, then I'd say this is a decent book to buy.But it is not a "how to" book for coping with problems in the male dominated corporate world. - Still some of the articles make interesting points. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Needs updating
Overall, this book could use some updating. I think if I'd looked at the date of publication I might have thought twice about putting it on my wish list. It was published in 1997 - in other words, pre-9/11, and before it was common to use websites as resources. There are several chapters that are just plain common sense.

The climate towards Americans has changed world-wide, the risks have increased.... and this book lacks links to Internet sites for the resources and agencies listed as helpful.

It is, however, good for listing general customs and things to watch for in various countries. It isn't bad - it would just be a lot better if they did an updated version.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and Ethnocentric
This book was published awhile ago, and needs to be updated. I was particularly interested in the Middle East section, which this book called, "The Lands of Islam." The language was ethnocentric, with an orientalist attitude (see Edward Said for an explanation of orientalism). I do not recommend this for anyone interested in info for this region of the world; I have lived there and the information presented in this book is now incorrect, as the book is outdated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Do's and Taboos Around the World for Women in Business
Interesting for young very unexperienced women.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recipe for success?? --> Take action !!!
"Do's and Taboos Around the World for Women in Business" is a highly interesting book, and one that is likely to prove useful for women who need to travel abroad for business reasons. Moreover, it is quite engaging, due to the fact that the authors combine practical advice with funny anecdotes about women working in international business.

I recommend you to read the whole book, if you can, because at least some of the tips it gives might help to you. On the other hand, if you are pressed for time, just read the parts that interest you more. The book is neatly divided into chapters according to subjects:

-Part one: Survival "over there"(it includes -> 1: Sex, dating, discrimination and harassment; 2: Know your product, know the culture; 3: Protocol for women; 4: Safety when traveling; 5:Healthy traveling; 6: Luggage and packing; chapters 1 to 6).
-Part two: Advice country by country (it analyzes some countries in particular, but most are grouped and studied by regions; chapters 7 to 22).
-Part three: Women in the world of work (it includes -> 23: Women in international business: past, present and future; 24: How I got my first job in international business; 25: Profiles of three successful women; chapters 23 to 25).
-Part four: The international assignment (it includes -> 26: To go or not to go; 27: Preparing for your life abroad; 28: Family matters; 29: On-the-job challenges; 30: Culture shock; 31: Repatriation and reverse culture shock; 32: Cross-cultural and language training; chapters 26 to 32).
-Part five: Help for the independent businesswoman who wishes to work abroad (it includes -> 33: Tips for the independent career search).
-Part six: Additional resources.

Personally, I found some chapters more practical than others, for instance I took great advantage of the tips on what to pack ("You don't need more clothes, more colors, more combinations. You need fewer things, carefully chosen"), but I guess that depends on what each of us needs more.

On the other hand, bear in mind that even though the advice that the writers give is right on the spot in most occasions, that is not always the case. For example, they point out that punctuality isn't overly important in Latin American countries, but I'm from Argentina and I can say that many think that arriving late is rude, so if you were to arrive late to a business meeting just to "follow local custom", you would be giving a bad impression.

Notwithstanding that, I can tell you that I really liked this book. I specially enjoyed the fact that the authors take into account that "international business tends to be uncomfortable for most North American managers -men as well as women. Many have yet to develop cross-cultural experience, skills, perspective, and confidence". Their recipe for success?. Well, according to them "You can allay your doubts by taking action. To overcome negative attitudes toward women in international business you must assume the initiative and thoroughly prepare yourself".

On the whole, I found this book very useful, and I believe that it can be valuable not only for women in international business but also to those who need to travel abroad with their families due to their spouses' job. "Do's and Taboos Around the World for Women in Business" isn't a perfect book, but it is a very good one, and the kind of book you will want to carry with you around the world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Do's and Taboo's
I thought that this book while touching on many areas of do's and taboos was very basic in it's approach...perhaps even juvenile or youngsterish...While I was looking for actual do's and don't this book often offered situational issues...rarely stating DON"TS and offering multiple choices instead of stating the real Do's in many cases. Good for young adults and young persons going into new countries. Older people probably want a guide that states the facts like: In this country..cover your head in public at all times..instead of choice 1-go buy a head scarf.....2 tear a part off your dress and make one ...3 go scarfless...4 scream loudly I'm an American and don't need it.
I was really looking for more depth and coverage from aexperienced traveled business person on exactly what to do. Still a starting point for a new business traveler.

5-0 out of 5 stars FROM A RETIREE
I have so enjoyed this latest book of Sheryl's and just wish it had come out a few years back when I was still working. It contains so many varied stories from women in today's work place which could have been so helpful to me.I fought my way up to a Secretary-Treasurer position of a small corporation about twenty years ago ... and I now know I got my title instead of the salary I so "richly deserved," because I allowed that to take place.Today I would have known better. If there had been a book like HEART OF A WOMAN IN BUSINESS around in those days, I would have known how to go after both the money and the title. This is an excellent book for every working woman of today, and I highly recommend it.

Product Description

Female executives of large companies are still in short supply in the U.S., but they have made great strides in recent years and their number is growing. Patricia Werhane and four other leadership experts interviewed twenty-two prominent women—including executives at Kraft, Boeing, and Harley Davidson—to uncover their leadership styles, reveal their most effective practices, and find out how they broke through the glass ceiling. This celebration of stellar executives highlights their achievements, the values and visions that guide them, and the contributions they've made to both their companies and industries. Besides enjoying fascinating stories, readers—both men and women—will gain insights that help them manage and lead better.

Despite enormous strides in the status of women in business, female CEOs of Fortune 500 companies can be counted on two hands, and less than 15 percent of Fortune 500 board seats are held by women. These daunting statistics, however, belie another phenomenon: The iceberg of male domination in the boardroom is beginning to break up and melt. More and more women are assuming positions of real leadership. And it's none too soon. With the increasing diversity of the workforce, businesses need the wisdom successful female executives can offer. To encourage more women to step up to the plate, this book tells many stories of perseverance and inventiveness. But it digs deeper to reveal common qualities and characteristics that reflect a style of leadership that is in stark contrast—in every major dimension, from communication styles to team building to crisis management—to the traditional, white-male model that has dominated practice, theory, and management education. While men tend to be transactional leaders, the women profiled in this book are nothing less than inspiring, transformational leaders. The result is an incisive, engaging, thought-provoking, and ultimately empowering narrative that will serve as a guide for women now entering, progressing, and leading in the workplace—as well as the men with whom they work.

Product Description

As women make great strides in business in the past two decades, many obstacles clearly still remain in a culture where the majority of the top jobs and positions are held by men. Jo Haigh has worked for many years in corporate finance, and has experienced these obstacles and overcome them. She offers stories of success from many different areas of business, giving advice on how to reconcile an open, emotional disposition with an executive level's occasionally brutal atmosphere; how to spot the right training and development opportunities (and get them funded); how to overcome resistance to female leadership; and how to build, manage, and maintain a professional network. Based on Haigh's own experience as an executive and entrepreneur, and bolstered by the experiences and stories of other top women in their fields, this is an indispensable resource for all women in business.

Product Description
The only book on the market to bring together business and women's history, Incorporating Women: A History of Women and Business in the United States by award-winning author Angel Kwolek-Folland, is an engaging and unique survey of women in business that begins with 17th century Native American fur traders and ends with the producer of the film Top Gun. Along the way, the reader is introduced to some of the women - famous, infamous, and forgotten - who have engaged in business throughout U.S. history. This narrative challenges our expectations about both the history of women and the history of business as it focuses on the changing legal and social climate for women's economic activities and traces the expansion of opportunities as well as the persistent problems that continue to face women in the business world. Kwolek-Folland has chosen two organizational themes: women's business experiences in light of a diversity of economic relations, and the importance of the legal and social conditions of women to their business opportunities. Drawing on cutting-edge scholarship in the "new business history," this volume covers everything from firms and markets, to small and large businesses, to workers and entrepreneurs. The extensive research from both primary and secondary sources, incorporates the latest scholarship on women and business and is presented in clear, jargon-free prose that makes this introduction to women's business history accessible to scholars, students, and everyone interested in the role of American women in business throughout history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another great addition to the family ...
The One Page Business Plan Company continues to offer great resources for entrepreneurs.I purchased my first The One Page Business Plan for the Creative Entrepreneur in 2004 and loved the step-by-step process it took me through.I was excited they introduced one specifically for consultants, The One Page Business Plan for the Professional Consultant in 2006 because it addressed specific issues for my business practice. So why did I get yet another version written specifically for Women in Business?

With their history of focusing on key needs for their target audience, I thought I'd give it a try and update my business plan (always a good idea to revisit this!)The "voice" it is written in speaks right to me and I LOVE the Sage Advice sections. This new feature in the book is encouraging and informative.Great job guys!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready to move forward on your business?
I have been in business for a while and as a company of one I had resisted creating a business plan. My thoughts were that it made no sense to bother with it because 1) Too hard and too abstract 2) I wasn't seeking financialhelp.
At the suggestion of my business coach, I gave in a tried the One Page Business Plan. Not only did it make total sense, it was easy and doable, but it has made a great difference in the success and growth of my business. As if by magic, the moment I wrote my plan, using the templates offered on the book and the accompanying CD's I found clarity and direction that allowed me to start taking the baby steps towards the goals I wanted for my business.
This book was just perfect for women entreprenerus like me who recognize that we do business a little different and truly have own own particular issues and challenges as business owners.
Whether you have own your business for a while or are getting ready to start, The One Page Business Plan is a great way to take that overwhelming idea out of your head and into paper in a way that makes it more real and attainable.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Read !
This is an excellent collection of stories about courageous business women who have broken barriers to achieve their goals! Each of these talented, and creative women are an inspiration to us all.Everyone can relate to their struggles, their ambitions and to the many insightful, real-life stories. Most of all, the book made me laugh - there are many truly hilarious passages. It is a great read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who aspires to beat the odds and pursue their dreams. If you are not "scrappy" already, this is the book that will inspire you to be so!

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrappy Women Rule!
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2111DM6XCL1R3 "Scrappy Women In Business" is hysterically funny. Kimberly Wiefling chose wisely in gathering this tribe of gutsy gals to share their "scrappiest" practices in the workplace. This book should be required reading for every woman who works in the "real world!"

4-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air...
Loved reading about the dynamic, powerful, talented, resilient women in Kimberly's book. Each has so much strength, character and ability to inspire.I read it in a day.The best parts for me were Betty Jo Waxman's advice on Gut Check Questions for the Aspiring Business Owner and Eldette Davie's lessons learned from the project from hell. Thanks for showing us how to bend the rules, be scrappy and succeed Kimberly!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrappy Women in Business Inspires us Trust our Own Path Forward
I first encountered Kimberly Wiefling's authentic voice when I was studying for my project management certification and was looking for a more grounded and salty perspective than what I found in PMBOK, the industry's official guidebook. To my utter delight, Wiefling delivered an honest, pragmatic and hilarious perspective in her book, Scrappy Project Management. Needless to say I read Scrappy Women in Business with great expectations which, once again, Wiefling delivered. Through this collection of scrappy women who share their life stories, we are able to see the larger themes of all pioneering women. It's easy to be inspired by their undaunted courage in the face of frequent self-doubt, perseverance when roadblocks pop up, ability to learn from failures and create a future for themselves with very limited resources. We are also able to come to grips with the fact that there isn't a typical "track" forward for women in business. Their stories allow us to be confident and trust that our own unconventional path can lead to success and fulfillment, if it hasn't already. These scrappy women also remind us to "own" our capabilities and recognize that many people and companies have already benefited from the wisdom we've gained in our journey along the way.

I liken scrappy women to fine wine. They say the best wine is made from grapes that come from vines that are planted on rocky hillsides where the roots have to struggle to dig deep into the ground to reach water. Scrappy women know how to "dig deep" and their results in business have proven very fruitful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than ever and very insightful!
I did not think Kimberly could topher "Scrappy Project Management" book but I think she has here!Women and men alike will benefit from the expertise of this collaboration of twelve smart and witty business women.Don't miss it, and pass it on to all who want to succeed in business and life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Benchmarks
For those organizations which seek to establish and then sustain programs which optimize the talents of the women whom they employ, this is an immensely informative book. Of even greater value than the informationprovided are the specific suggestions it offers based on three decades ofresearch on all manner of companies. Catalyst is a non-profit organizationwhich "partners with U.S. corporations and professional firms thatunderstand the critical power of women at work, that know that women'sadvancement is not a feel-good or even a do-good issue but a bottom-linepracticality."

The Catalyst Award is given to those corporations whichhave achieved lasting, measurable results in this area. The book examinesmany of these corporations. For example: IBM, Avon Products, E.I. du Pontde Nemours, Eastman Kodak, Arthur Andersen, Motorola, American Airlines,Morrison & Foerster, McDonald's, J.C. Penney, Dow Chemical,Knight-Ridder, Texas Instruments, and Allstate. I hasten to point out thatmost (if not all) of the information and suggestions provided by the bookare also relevant to small-to-midsize organizations and may indeed be ofeven greater value to them than to (let's say) "Fortune 100"companies.

Advancing Women in Business is divided as follows:

Part I. Changing the System

Part II. Best Practices

Part III. Resources: The Catalyst Award

"The Catalyst Approach" can maximize thevalue of a workforce by "capitalizing on the talents of women" only if allefforts are made within an "inclusive, problem-solving, comprehensiveprogram." Specifically, first establish a strong foundation by connectingeach initiative explicitly to a business rationale; next, build a fact baseby gathering information that will create the baselines for evaluating eachinitiative's progress; finally, develop, pilot, and implement action planswhose initiatives achieve practical solutions tailored to theorganization's environment. How? Several dozen corporations are examinedwhich illustrate what the "Catalyst Approach" requires of those involved inits implementation. Specific strategies and tactics are discussed. Resultsare measured and evaluated. I rate this book so highly because I think itis very well written, because it provides a wealth of important informationabout "best practices from the corporate leaders", and because it includesa number of practical suggestions as to HOW to derive greatest benefit fromthat information. By now, frankly, I had hoped that a gender-specific booksuch as this would be unnecessary in the year 2000. Well, unfortunately, itis. I now hope that enough people buy it and enough organizations areguided by it so that one day very soon, my granddaughters read it and thenask me "What's this all about? Was it really like that? That's ridiculous!"Yes it is.

Product Description
“Ann Holmes has created the perfect guide to help women turn their dreams into a reality.”
–Donna Mullen Good, CEO of the Center for Women & Enterprise

If you’ve ever dreamed of starting your own business, or if you’ve ever wondered about how to build up the business you already run, but worry because you don’t have an MBA or a couple of years of college business courses, this book is for you. Based on extensive interviews with more than eighty women entrepreneurs from around the country, There’s a Business in Every Woman offers inspiring success stories (and instructive missteps) in a wide range of businesses–from catering, landscaping, personal training, and wedding and events planning to interior and clothing design, staffing, manufacturing, and product design.

What the trailblazing women in this book have in common is a good idea and the courage to turn a dream into a money-making reality through hard work, passion, and drive. Take, for instance, the woman who started an IT consulting company in her basement and now has more than a thousand employees in three states; two jogging buddies who commiserated about their uncomfortable bras and went on to design and produce a jog bra, creating a company that Playtex ultimately bought for millions; the mom whose hand-made birthday-party invitations made such a splash that she launched her own custom party invitation company, which she expanded to include holiday cards, gift tags, bags, and more; the sixty-five-year-old corporate wife and mother who applied her domestic talents to opening a profitable B&B; the twenty-three-year-old who bought a fledging real estate franchise and now earns a healthy six figures annually.

These success stories highlight the practical: focusing on what you’re good at; setting up your business properly–even if you are starting out from your basement or garage; getting financial backing when you need it; marketing your products with sizzle; networking like the “good old boys”; understanding how and when to diversify your products or services; managing your growth; and, most important, knowing what your company is worth and when it might be lucrative to cash out.

An accessible crash course in starting and running your own business, There’s a Business in Every Woman will teach you everything you need to know to turn your pipedream into serious profits.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you want to start your own business, read this book
This book is great for anyone who is in business or wants to start a business. Ann Holmes knows her subject. She has successfully started, run and sold multiple businesses. Although directed toward women, anyone going into business can benefit.

Ann writes with the wisdom of a mother who knows how to coach her children from birth to graduation, one step at a time. She assumes the reader is starting at the beginning and must acquire the business language, know-how, and understanding needed to operate a successful company.

True to her subtitle, the book provides a concise 7-step guide to discovering, starting and building the business of your dreams. It comes complete with a checklist for each step, real life examples, and plenty of resources. Ann openly shares her own experiences of having to make tough decisions to get her business through difficult times. Beside the checklists there are "Success" stories and "Regrets" stories to help you recognize the value of each step and what the consequences could be if you do not organize a business in a systematic way.

In the second part of her book, putting the seven steps into practice, Ann continues to provide real-life examples so the reader will comes away with a total concept that the business owner's role is to be the captain who charts the course for the business and uses the wisdom of the 7-step guide to navigate the business to a successful outcome including selling the business if that is your goal.

The only thing left for the reader is to have the brilliant business idea, follow the 7-step guide, and make the decisions that let your business flourish.

Armchair Interviews says: With so many women starting businesses, anything that helps them be successful is important to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A ra-ra book for women who want to think about starting their own small business.

I enjoyed this book. I think any woman who collects a W-2 and wants to become self-employed would do themselves a favor to read this book as they plan to make the transition. As I turned the pages to this book I felt as though I was reading a re-write of Ginny Wilmerding's book that came out last year entitled Smart Women and Small Business (ISBN: 0471778680). See my review for that book.

This book is broken into 10 chapters as follows:

1. How Do You Know if There's a Business in You?
2. Choose and Focus on Your Core Competencies
3. Build Your Company's Infrastructure
4. Keep Good Financials
5. Market Your Products
6. Diversify
7. Plan and Manage Growth
8. Understand Valuation and Organize an Exit Plan
9. Put Your Company into Play
10. Done Deals: Sold Companies and IPOs

It claims to include a 7-step guide to discovering, starting, and building the business of your dreams. I found the "guide" to include some wonderful information, but I did not find it to flow logically from one step to the next. At page 30 of the book in Figure 2 the 7-steps are diagrammed. I'm not going to point out all the diagram's flaws, but I will say I think it would have been much better if it had been written as the following "7 steps." See

1. Learn the ropes of your business BEFORE you start it (have a skill set)
2. Prepare a business plan
3. Start the business
4. Market the business & keep good financial records
5. Grow & Diversify
6. Systematize the business
7. Sell the business (exit & move on)

The author says at page 5 of the book that she wrote it for women entrepreneurs to help them navigate the steps to business success. As long as you keep in mind the above 7 steps I have written here you can read the book and the author will accomplish what she set out to do by writing the book. There is lots of great content in this book. My favorite part was Chapters 9 & 10 that describes the process of preparing to sell your company and cash out. I would have liked the book better if the topic of venture capital had been left out. It did not seem appropriate for the target audience of this book.

I particularly liked the reference made to SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) at page 35. I'm a SCORE volunteer, and the fact that I am is probably why I am reviewing this book. It's worth a read. 4 stars! ... Read more

Product Description
This program is for working women who are fed up with the male dominance in their business or social organization. This is a program for women who want to break into the "good old boy" network for a greater chance at getting promoted and having a voice in the future of their organization. This program outlines the techniques for making more logical and objective business decisions. A female supervisor or "informal leader" who wants to be part of a more logical decision-making process can use this program workbook.Phase I of the workbook sets the tone by explaining that group decision-making will be the focus, however many of the processes can be used for individual decisions.Phase II reviews eight decision-making processes and invites the reader to select one to use at work.Phase III presents refinements to the processes in phase II where more objectivity and logic are desired in the decision-making process. Examples are brainstorming and how to select the best alternative.Phase IV outlines factors that are present in all business decision-making environments. This includes the political, social, and personality factors. Individual versus team decision-making is reviewed.Phase V presents options for special decision-making.Examples are strategic planning, and quality improvement teams. The appendix contains examples and blank work sheets for decision-making situations.

You are NOT asked to be less feminine, but merely to use provided techniques to influence men to respect your logic and objectivity.Benefits included in the program are: (1) Reviewing a variety of decision-making processes, understanding when each process should be used, and how to apply these processes with the males in the organization. Many of these processes can be used in your personal life, (2) Being able to implement the basic decision-making techniques in a team/group environment. This is because work teams are now a standard work unit in many organizations, (3) Learning how to apply refinements to the basic processes where increased objectivity is desired.Examples of these refinements include brainstorming and how to select the best alternative,(4) Knowing how to plan for the different factors in the decision-making environment for more successful final decisions, (5) Having a variety of examples and blank forms for easier application of the processes, (6) Having the aid of a support system to assist in the learning process.Step-by-step encouragement is offered at the web site for each phase of the program, and interactive communication with the author is offered in using the techniques with specific males, (7) Building confidence in your new abilities, which should reduce work stress and improve the feeling of "wellness," and (8) Learning these techniques with an easy-to-follow 59 page workbook with "do-it-now" steps and worksheets, in the self-paced privacy of home or office. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars PASSION FUELS SUCCESS
Alexandra Powe Allred brings an inspiring and informative book based on 25 examples of women who have achieved astounding success in business, along with what drove them to their heights. You will learn how to "identify your chosen field" how to break down boundaries, "doing your homework" how to "market yourself and your business" and much more. One of my favorite examples for strategy is about Jenny Craig, and the "recommended steps for success" provided: "Set your goal;" "Understand your market;" "Research several aspects of the business and your product"; "Identify your resources"; "Learn what you need to know"; "Develop your marketing skills"; "Hone your people skills"; "Believe in yourself and your goal."

Most importantly, this book will inspire you to hopefully look within and discover what you are absolutely PASSIONATE about doing and being in your life. It is your heart-felt passion that fuels your energy to do what it takes to live your dreams, while you joyfully create the success you deserve along the way.

Highly recommended for the inspiring stories of HOW women started from scratch and created the life and success they deserve, as well as for the in-depth resource guide at the back of the book, bringing you complete contact information for excellent organizations and publications, that can aid you in creating the success you deserve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Napoleon Hill's Message
In the wonderful book, "Think and Grow Rich," by Napoleon Hill, he advises readers to think of role models who at night, just before going to sleep, you imagine are in a meeting with.During this imaginary meeting you are asking them to teach you what you most admire in them.

And he calls these people his invisible counselors.

Aliza, in essense, is doing this, through "PowerTools For Women in Business," by telling the story of 10 women who continue to convert their most adverse life experiences into propelling causes, work and prospererty.

Because, as Mary-Scott Welch, "Networking", said, "It helps a lot to get other women's ideas about your problems, not in the abstract but in the very specific terms of a real-life situation," a book like "PowerTools is a great beginning for women to walk through the examples of other women, to bring out the best in who we are.

As a journalist, I have the opportunity to meet many authors, and I must say that some of them do not live the messages that they promotee in their books - but Aliza certainly does.

This book contains easy to follow, real life stories of women maximizing their strengths, while never forgeting to be women.

Thank you, Aliza for living your mission.

5-0 out of 5 stars An enthusiastic, can-do optimistic guide
Aliza Sherman's PowerTools For Women In Business is an enthusiastic, can-do optimistic guide that teaches women how to best take advantage of their own strengths and personalities to succeed in the business world. PowerTools For Women In Business is about keeping professional and personal lives in harmonious balance, never sacrificing one at the expense of another, when for women especially they tend to become all too intertwined. Personally imposed barriers to success, and emotional obstacles such as guilt or unease wielding power can be confronted and conquered. Very highly recommended reading for any female executive, especially one who is relatively new to the cutthroat, male-dominated, complex and demanding world of business!

A critical lesson, that by overcoming our fear of asking for help and appearing needy, we can actually get farther faster by talking about the areas of business we are stuck in and learning from the advice of others.Powertools was a fun and informative read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Insights in Craziness
With this book, Weinstock reveals a lot. She gives us the true insider's look at how movies and TV shows are made. The streets in Hollywood aren't paved with gold, she says, but with hard work. And you can see that in each interesting, insightful story she tells. But this isn't so much a book about working as a producer but about working in general--about what it's like to have an unreasonable boss or to have to be the one in charge of a difficult (and sometimes dangerous) situation or to learn to deal with difficult people and situations. In revealing so much about her own experiences, difficulties and achievements, Weinstock helps anyone who reads her book to see better how to avoid setbacks and enjoy triumphs. Debra Anne Davis

5-0 out of 5 stars Where were you 20 years ago?
I wish this book had been around when we were involved in our family business! It is a comprehensive guide with extensive examples and very practical bullet points at the end of each section.

The different scenarios or case studies rang so true. And, although the realities are shocking and jarring to me (i.e. how women are STILL often regarded as second class citizens in family businesses), it is certainly better to be aware of the many pitfalls and develop a pro-active strategy.

A must-read not just for the women in a family business but everyone involved!

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended! A must read for every woman involved in a family business.
Excellent advice for every women involved, or about to become involved in a family business. I also encourage the male in a family business to pick up a copy to get valuable insights on often-overlooked issues that happen every day in family businesses.

As a family business coach, I encounter the issues described in the book, and many more, on a regular basis. Moreover, having experienced many of the issues described in my own life - first as the oldest daughter and sister to a younger brother working in a family business, then marrying into a family business and becoming the daughter/sister-in-law, and as the widow of the successor son - I find that the authors did an excellent job in capturing the main issues females deal with in a family business.

For the spouse, the book provides excellent insights and advice what you should be aware of concerning succession and continuity planning (chapter 3), and estate planning (chapter 5).The information described, is often not included in a way that serve your best interest when succession and estate plans are made. Therefore, it is important for you to be aware of the issues and take a pro-active stand. The book is an excellent starting point.

In addition, I agree with the information on what you should know as a spouse, mother, daughter-in-law, aspiring family business leader etc.It takes a shift in attitudes and you need to see things for what they are.I remember, while growing up, I made a promise to myself never ever to marry a man who had his own business, based on what I saw around me - my own family and that of friends. As things went, I married into one and started to remember what my mother told me.The advice she gave me was priceless. The authors captured many of the things and is a `must' read not only for the women already married into a business, but also for the ones about to do so.

Every family business is unique and, therefore, has a set of unique challenges; I find the authors captured the main issues and provide valuable advice and insights that can help you in your situation.

One bit of advice - while reading the book keep in mind that the book is organized around the roles of women in family business, and the issues as it relates to that specific role.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insight and advice
As an author, I loved the format. It's easy to read with practical solutions to some common problems for women in family business. As the book shows, you don't have to take a paycheck to experience the challenges in a family business.
Wish I'd had this little jewel 20 years ago when I married a man with loads of family business issues!!!
Congrats to the authors.

Family, Inc.: How to Manage Parents, Siblings, Spouses, Children, and In-Laws in the Family Business

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb advice for the female, and sometimes for the male, in how to cope with the transfer of business assets and responsibility
Since this book is written from the perspective of the female as wife, daughter, stepdaughter and daughter in law, as a male I cannot completely place myself in the role of the target audience. However, as someone with a family business and the father of a daughter that has been working for that business for eight years, she is now seventeen; I do have a great deal of expertise regarding the subject matter. Also, I can understand the perspective of the male roles referenced by the case studies.
The authors do a superb job in describing many of the situations that can arise in the course of the development of a family business and how it is treated as an asset to be passed on to members of the family, whether the relation is genetic or marital. One of the best points of the book is the mention of the brutal reality that there are situations where it is best to just sell the business off and split the assets. That may be anathema to the person who built the business, but in some cases it is really the only option that preserves any value.
People that built businesses, and most of the examples in this book are male, tend to be strong, confident personalities.Transferring the somewhat abstract entity of the business and any assets to others is a complex task fraught with many ways in which resentment can be created. While the authors obviously could not present and resolve every possible situation, they do cover enough ground so that you will be able to find advice that will be applicable to your situation, whatever it may happen to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Being married to a business owner for over 15 years, I thought this book was very helpful and I appreciated the psychological and relational approach. It is very difficult to find information that specifically deals with roles women have in the family business, but who do not work in the business.I liked the practical advice and I related to the scenarios provided. There are a lot of women and men who would benefit from reading this book. ... Product Description

This book uniquely combines gender theory, case studies, and the legal challenges surrounding the mechanisms of gender discrimination at work. It provides the student with real-life examples from managers (based on interviews with people who experienced discrimination) that help students understand how gender discrimination operates, even when there are legal protections against it. At the end of each case study, students are asked to put themselves in the shoes of the individual experiencing the discrimination and ask themselves reflect on how they would handle the situation. Students must examine their own beliefs about gender and work place practices and consider consequences of actions they might take. In addition to the sections of theory, cases, and legal challenges, websites of interest are included student assignments and classroom activities.

Key features include:

  • Engaging case studies embedded in each chapter
  • Legal cases that highlight each chapter and lend credibility to each case study

Product Description
This comprehensive handbook presents specially commissioned original essays on the societal roles and contexts facing women in business and management, the specific career and work-life issues of women in these fields, organizational processes affecting women, and the role of women as leaders in business and management. The essays shed light on the extant structures and practices of society and organizations that constrain or facilitate women's representation, treatment, quality of life, and success.

Despite decades of ongoing inquiry and increasing interest, research on women in business and management remains a specialized field without mainstream acceptance within business and management disciplines. The handbook presents the current state of knowledge about women in business and management and specifies the directions for future research likely to be most constructive for advancing the representation, treatment, quality of life, and success of women who work in these fields. It provides the foundations for improved societal and organizational structures, policies, and relational practices affecting all in business and management. Thus, by enhancing the knowledge base that improves the work and life situations of women, it suggests ways to elevate the societal and organizational systems for all.

The handbook will be an essential reference source for recent advances in research and theory, informing both scholars of organization studies, gender, diversity, and feminism; human resource specialists; and educators of and consultants to business organizations and management.
