The University Committee on Women has carefully reviewed the policy ìsupporting the arrival of children.î We view this policy as a step forward in expanding the opportunities for new parents to care for children. We applaud the effort to include both partners as eligible for parental leave and tenure clock/professional review revisions. We also applaud the decision to include adoptive as well as biological parents as having rights within this policy. We believe that these innovations open up possibilities that have been closed to many new parents who are employed at Iowa State. Because we believe the policy does not yet address the full range of issues regarding parental and family leave we can only give it a ìqualified endorsement.î We request that the policy be implemented for a probationary period of one-year during which UCW and other stakeholders can refine the policy and monitor how it is used.

Extractions: Karen Newell, project leader The 1970s brought many changes to the world of workers and to the classrooms where workers were being prepared. Traditional roles were challenged, and it became apparent that attitudes and pedagogy needed an overhaul. Free To Be You and Me was a popular book with a strong and important message: children must be affirmed for their unique qualities and potential. Girls could be anything they want to be. Girls could be police officers, astronauts or scientists. It came as a revelation to some and a liberating vision to many. Change was in the air. Many of us were thrilled and empowered. Many of us were threatened and afraid. As the mother of two daughters, I must say I joined the former group with enthusiasm. As educators we needed to look at our own biases and prejudices. We did. We challenged the way women and people of color were represented in our textbooks and programs. Language became more inclusive. The appellation Ms. was born, and appeared on many of our classroom doors for the first time. Project Link grew from these changing attitudes.

Settling the issue of salaries for employees during forced absenses During the Gulf War the employees were required to stay at home and not come to work in the event that: (1) The security forces gave such an order to the entire population, or (2) all educational institutions were closed and the employees were instructed not to leave children without supervision. The question of who should bear the burden of payments for the absentee days received a partial answer much later. In order to prevent harm to employees, in general, and to working mothers who are the sole wage earners, in particular, an obligatory payment of salary must be determined for absentee days, and employers should receive government compensation. Forbidden to dismiss parents who are absent from work because they are taking care of their children during emergency periods.

But the women who taught then and in the early days of the republic had little formal training. Education for girls and young women was geared toward instructing them to be good wives, mothers, and homemakersnot teachers of academic subjects. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, women taught the rudiments of reading, writing, and arithmetic in dame schools in their own homes to pupils who paid tuition. As late as 1827, Mary Jacobs announced that she would teach "reading, writing, cyphering, spelling, needlework and fancy Knitting at her house by Sewall's Bridge." The tuition of six cents a week "could be paid in sugar, tea or coffee."

Some women have done this through the political route, working with, and often against, our nation's politicians to show the rest of the nation that women will not settle for anything less than what is rightfully ours. Many women have shown their dedication not through a public political medium, but by setting an example in their daily lives as people who command respect, speak for themselves, and believe in every woman's right to do so. The constant struggle to remain true to one's self and demand equal freedom in every facet of life is no less noble than the political quest to change things in government. It included specific questions related to chronic disease including heart disease, diabetes, migraine headache, back pain and cancer, said Bank One Medical Director Wayne Burton, M.D. Twenty-one percent, or 19,853 employees, returned the questionnaire. Analyzing demographic and payroll data along with the survey responses, the researchers estimated corporate costs due to migraine-related absenteeism and reduced on-the-job productivity to total $21.5 to $24.4 million for the year, Burton said.
