Composed of land masses and coastal fringe on the main island of Culebra and offshore keys. The refuge supports a tropical island fauna and flora representative of the most healthy resources viewable in Puerto Rico today. The absence of development in refuge units protects fragile marine ecosystems from damage by erosion and sedimentation, helping to keep surrounding waters clear. While our trust resources benefit, visitors can enjoy spectacular views both above and below the water line. A Brief History The first known inhabitants on the island were pre-Taino Indian (ca. 500 A.D.), followed by colonists in 1880 from neighboring Vieques and Puerto Rico. At the end of the Spanish-American war, Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the U.S. (1898), and in 1901 the Culebra Naval Reservation was established. With the outbreak of WWII, the Culebra archipelago became the primary gunnery and bombing practice site for the U.S. Navy, which continued on Culebra until 1975. The next year the Navy turned over jurisdiction of these protected areas to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Approximately one quarter of the Culebra archipelago’s total land mass is now included within the refuge. Wildlife and Habitat Offshore keys provide a variety of habitat types for 13 species of migratory seabirds, including Laughing Gulls, Sooty, Roseate, and Bridled Terns, White-tailed and Red-billed Tropicbirds, and Brown Noddies. Throughout the year three species of Boobies, Magnificent Frigate birds, Brown Pelicans and Royal Terns are found in remote areas of the archipelago.

The land surrounding the Wildlife Park was utilised by the Kaurna Aboriginal people as a summer food-gathering and retreat area. The museum's 8,000 square-foot exhibit hall is filled with over 50 species of live, non-releasable native wild animals, a learning theatre and a discovery room with hands-on opportunities for children. In the museum's wildlife hospital one of the largest and oldest wildlife rehabilitation centers in the United States volunteers treat nearly 6,000 injured or orphaned animals every year. Some animals that cannot be returned to their natural home in the wild become part of the museum's live collection. They are cared for daily by teams of volunteers and they play an important role as ambassadors for their species. The museum is surrounded by demonstration gardens that reflect the overall theme of living with nature. Four of the gardens feature plant communities representing natural habitats in Contra Costa County. A wildlife garden contains nectar and fruit-producing plants. Drought-tolerant plants with colorful flowers are the focus of another garden. Deer-resistant plants, an oak woodland and a meadow are additional highlights. The gardens are maintained without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. A complete plant list is available upon request.

Nongame Research The Mississippi Natural Heritage Program identifies the state's most significant natural areas through a comprehensive inventory of rare plant and animal species, exemplary natural communities, special geological features, and significant natural areas. From the inventory, the Natural Heritage Database compiles information on the distribution, biology, status, and preservation needs of these species and communities. Established in 1976, through a cooperative agreement between The Nature Conservancy, a private conservation organization, and the Mississippi Parks Commission (now part of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks), full administration of the program was assumed by the DWFP in 1978. The Mississippi Natural Heritage Program is part of an international network including State Natural Heritage Programs and Conservation Data Centers, all building on the same data collection methodology. The database is updated continuously and is used to set state, national and global priorities for the preservation of natural diversity. Tracks the status of more than 600 species of plants and animals that are rare or imperiled at the state or global level.

The majority of wild animals you will see in Buffalo Grove are typical throughout both Lake and Cook Counties. Some of the most common ones are a variety of birds, squirrels, opossums, raccoons, and woodchucks. On occasion, you might see a white-tailed deer, a red fox, or a coyote. All of these animals (with the exception of some bird species) are protected under the Illinois Wildlife Code. As our local towns and communities expand, these animals are running out of natural habitat. The animals you encounter typically are very timid, and will look for the easiest and fastest way to get away from you. As an informed resident, you can become familiar with their behaviors and learn ways to discourage them from living on your property or in your residence. By doing so we can successfully co-exist with the wildlife in our community. The State of Illinois requires a special nuisance animal permit for anyone who wishes to trap wildlife. Since the Village of Buffalo Grove does not have a separately funded and trained animal control department, the Village has not obtained a State of Illinois Nuisance Animal Permit. At this time, we utilize private agencies with the state permits to ensure that all wildlife are humanely trapped and safely relocated. The police department has a list of animal control companies that we would be happy to provide to you. These companies do have the necessary permits to trap and relocate wild animals, however it will be at a cost to you. If you wish to obtain information off of this list, please call our non-emergency number (847-459-2560) and ask to speak with a Community Service Officer or Desk Officer.
