The Kathleen Hughes Memorial Lecture on Mediaeval Welsh History On 30 April, 2001, our Lecturer was Dr David Stephenson of Cambridge Seminars, speaking on 'The Aberconwy Chronicle'.  It was clear at this event that the Kathleen Hughes Memorial Lecture is now a popular part of the annual Hughes Hall lecture schedule. In 2002 the Hughes Memorial Lecture will be given by Professor Rees Davies of All Souls' College and the University of Oxford.  As President, I am most grateful to our Hughes Memorial Lecture Advisory Committee consisting of Dr Franklin, Professor Dumville, and Professor Patrick SimsWilliams (University of Wales, Aberystwyth) for nominating distinguished scholars to be asked to be our Lecturers. Hughes Hall hopes that this new academic initiative will make a significant scholarly contribution to the study of Welsh history and that the series will continue for many years.  I am pleased to have been able to welcome it to the College's calendar.

    Extractions: WELSH HISTORY IN THE BAY AREA American history nurtured such Welsh descendants as Norman Thomas, the eloquent Socialist; Frank Lloyd Wright, noted architect; fiery labor leader John Llewellyn Lewis; and Sinclair Lewis, the unrelenting satirist. We also claim several signers of the Declaration of Independence. In our area, the first Welsh Church west of the Rocky Mountains was built in 1849 on DuPont Street (now called Grant Avenue) in the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown. It is known that over 200 Welsh miners worked in the gold fields, many with their wives and families, and coal miners that worked the Mt. Diablo mine have left their history in the cemetery at that site. These immigrants to the new country were religious and law-abiding citizens. They formed choirs, held Eisteddfodau (their cultural festivals), and spoke Cymraeg (their native tongue). Their many descendants live among us today. One Welshman noted as the architect of California's early greatness was William McKendree Gwin. His father, James, brought the family to South Carolina and on by wagon train to Tennessee. A deeply religious man, James became known as "Parson Gwin." William read law and was admitted to the bar at 21; he also studied medicine. After various endeavors and developing friendships with the leading politicians of the era, William came to San Francisco and was elected to the Constitutional Convention in Monterey. His contributions to that august body marked him as the main architect of the California Constitution. His provision for public schools was way ahead of the times. On December 31, 1849 the First Legislature of California elected Dr. Gwin and John Charles Fremont to the United States Senate.

For what happened next, I'll be using William of Malmesbury's "The Kings Before the Norman Conquest" (originally written in the 12th C), as William does a good job of synthesizing Bede, Gildas and the AS Chronicle. I'll also draw from Walker's "Medieval Wales" and Lloyd. After the legions had left, the story of what happened in Britain becomes very unclear due to the lack of sources. Here's what happened according to the traditional accounts: After the legions had left, the Picts and Scots (Irish colonizers in Scotland) set about to invade the former province at once. The Romano-Britons requested help from Rome, then ruled by Honorius, which twice extended its aid. However, the last time, the Romans informed the Britons that they could not come again "Accompanied by the tears of the miserable inhabitants" (William of M). The Scots and Picts make fresh attacks, the Britons are hard pressed. The leader of the Britons is Vortigern, " a man calculated neither for the field nor the council, but wholly given up to the lusts of the flesh, the slave of every vice, a charachter of insatiable avarice, ungovernable pride, unquenchable lust

History The Dublin Welsh Male Voice Choir was formed in the 1960s by a small number of Welshmen who had settled in Dublin. Over the years, many Irishmen (and even a few Scots, English and a Dutchman) have combined to form the present choir, which has retained a unique and authentically Welsh choral sound and repertoire - with Irish songs included for good measure. The Dublin Welsh Male Voice Choir at the National Concert Hall The choir has performed and competed in Ireland and abroad and has won prizes at choral competitions in Killarney, Arklow, Navan and Galway. It has performed at the Miners Eisteddfod in Porthcawl and in 1987 it was the first Irish choir chosen to participate in the Night of 1000 Male Voices at the Royal Albert Hall. More recently it participated in the World Choir events in Cardiff and Dublin - but the outstanding highlight for every member was the 1994 tour of Georgia USA, culminating in a spectacular concert in the Atlanta Dome.

The history of Welsh folk dancing is quite a sad one. With the advent of the Non-conformist sects in the 18th and 19th centuries, the chapels saw the Welsh folk arts and customs as ones that were very sinful and not in keeping with chapel teaching. The chapels, chapel-folk, deacons and preachers, some of them the greats of their day like Thomas Charles, Bala, did their utmost to stamp out all sorts of sinful" folk entertainment such as dancing, folk singing, Mabsant festivals and folk music generally, except, of course, hymn singing and music in the chapels. People had to conform (!!) to peer pressure in the Welsh and Welsh-speaking society, although some did resist the pressure and continued to dance (but only after closing the curtains of the house first!!).

This is where you can find out all about the project led by the Ffestiniog Railway to rebuild and operate the Welsh Highland Railway , a neighbouring line running through the mountains of Wales which closed in the 1930s. Approval has been granted to rebuild the whole line. The first seven miles of the new line from Caernarfon to Waunfawr are open, and the extension to the foot of Snowdon will open later this year. This site includes information on the present operations and future plans of Rheilffordd Eryri (Welsh title for the rebuilt WHR), the developments that have led up to the rebuilding now under way, and lots of pictures. This is the railway project that everyone is talking about - check back often for developments as they happen.
