The Dictionary, which is the first complete historical dictionary of the Welsh language, has been the major project of the Universitys Board of Celtic Studies for 81 years, since work commenced in 1921. Publication began in 1950, with the fourth and final volume being completed in 2002.

The Prize consists of books to the value of £70 selected by the prize winner. The candidates for the Prize will be the students taking Welsh History as part of the examination for a degree with Honours; it will be awarded annually, in the case of sufficient merit, to the candidate who, in the opinion of the external examiner in Welsh History, has attained the highest standard. In the case of the equality of two candidates of adequate merit, the Prize may be divided.

But here are the details we have. London Welsh came through another season of encouraging wins and frustrating losses to finish 5th again. "Adrian Davies has in his first year experienced the highs and lows of coaching..yet he has comfortably kept the Club in the higher echelons of the 1st Division." John Dawes, President A season of consolidation enlivened by a good Cup run as London Welsh finished fifth in ADP2. London Welsh performed creditably in their first season in ADP2, finishing fourth and achieving our highest ever league placing. London Welsh achieved promotion from third place due to a league restructuring. A season to forget, both off and on the pitch, but the stats are here just in case you do want to be reminded. Don't look for too long, you'll only get depressed. This season was a success for the Welsh. Extractions: TEACHING METHODS: Lectures, seminars, tutorials and directed learning CONTENT This module will trace the formation of the Welsh people from the early Celts through Roman times and into the early medieval period. Particular attention will be paid to examining the sources for this period, including archaeological remains, material culture, the writings of Ranaus and early historians such as Gildas and Nennuis, the lives of saints, myths and legends. The module will conclude with a discussion of the early Welsh laws which organised Welsh society on the eve of the Norman conquest. Field visits to relevant historical sites such as Castell Henllys hill fort, Caerleon Roman amphitheatre and St Davids cathedral will form an integral part of the course.

Extractions: Historical News Vol. 21, No 5, 1988 In the 1870's and 1880's several families from Wales homestead or bought land in Adams County. Among these early settlers were Evanes, Llewellyns, Williamses, and three brothers, Thomas T., William, and Owen Jones. One of the first to come to Adams County was Thomas T. Jones, who had been a slate cutter at the Nantille, Wales, quarries. In 1869, he had married Margaret Davies, the daughter of the manager of the Cwmllan Slate quarries, and they made their home at Rosehill, Talysarn. Thomas and Margaret with their infant son Thomas W. left home in 1871, and from Liverpool, England took passage to America. They went to a Welsh settlement at Old Man's Creek near Iowa City, Iowa. During their two years in Iowa, Thomas gained a knowledge of farming by working for Iowa farmers, and thus had both experience and an income to support his family. In March 1873, Thomas left his family which now included a daughter as well as a wife and a son. Alone, he went in search of land; traveled as far as Harvard, Nebraska, by train; and thereafter by foot into Webster County to the homestead of Dixie Jones, another Welshman. Jones is a very common Welsh name, and Tomas and Dixie were unrelated. However it was known that Kickie could be helpful in securing land for prospective settlers. Years later, a son of Thomas and a son of Dixie became friendly Hastings businessman.

In the last year of the 18th century, it became home to mill worker and owner, John Jones, his wife Barbara (Davis) Jones of Montgomeryshire, Wales and their sons, John and Richard, both sons having been born in Liverpool, England. In 1811, in a house which still stands and is occupied as a private residence east of the East Poultney Green, son George Jones was born as well as several other children. The family lived there until George was a young teen. George Jones is Poultney's most famous native citizen. A writer, he was co-founder of The New York Times daily newspaper. He is also known for his breaking up of the Tweed Ring; his role in the building of the second Times Building when he was 75 years old; and the raising of the Fund which assured General U.S. Grant an income during the last years of the General's life. He was friends with another famous writer who came to Poultney and learned the printing trade in East Poultney's Northern Spectator Horace Greeley founder of the New York Tribune

Then he could roam anywhere at will. King Math had two nephews whose names were Gwydyon and Gilvaethwy. Gilvaethwy had wicked designs on the beautiful virgin Goewin, in whose lap Math rested his feet. nable to get the beautiful Goewin alone so he could have his way with her, Gilvaethwy and his brother devised a plan to get Math to go to war. They had heard that a neighboring King, Pryderi had a very special herd of pigs (Moch) that belonged to him and to his people. Because their flesh was sweeter than that of Oxen, Pryderi had promised his people that the Moch(pigs) would make them rich, but that not one Mochyn (pig) would be touched until the herd had doubled in size. wydyon and Gilvaethwy disguised themselves as bards and went to Pryderi's kingdom where, according to Welsh custom, they were invited to Pryderi's table to feast. They all recited poetry and ate and drank. After a flask or two too many Pryderi said that Gwydyon and Gilvaethwy's poetry was the best he ever heard and offered them a gift of whatever they wanted. Gwydyon and Gilvaethwy asked Pryderi if they could have his Moch. Pryderi of course said no, that the Moch belonged to his people and were to make them rich, but he said that after the herd had doubled in size, Pryderi would gladly give them some pigs. But Gwydyon and Gilvaethwy said they would give Pryderi something much more valuable then the pigs, and his people would be satisfied.
