Extractions: An American journalist who used the internet to contact Welsh-speaking communities all over the world is to address a conference about the globalisation of different cultures. Pamela Petro, author of "Travels in an Ancient Tongue: touring the World Speaking Welsh" began learning Welsh when she was studying in Lampeter in west Wales. She found it infuriating that whenever she stumbled with her Welsh, the locals would revert to English. So Ms Petro decided to go where English was not an option - other countries with long-standing Welsh-speaking communities. She visited the Hong Kong Men's Choir, a group which sings exclusively in Welsh, the Japanese bardic "eisteddfod" in Tokyo, the Welsh golfers of Oslo, the diners of the Paris Welsh society, and Patagonia. Cultural influences Pamela Petro is one of around 100 speakers at the three-day conference at the University of Swansea called "Writing Disaporas". The conference examines the so-called "axial connections" between different parts of the world, where cultural infuences through language, music and art move between people from different countries, or even continents.

Now Edwards and others are working to restore the Welsh to their area. Edwards has been studying the Welsh language at Middlebury College for about six years, and from her home in Poultney she runs the Welsh-American Geneological Society and helps with the Poultney area St. Davids Society, of which she is a founder. Growing up here, it was not uncommon to hear Welsh spoken, said Edwards, who says shes conversant in the complex language. But as older residents passed on, so did their native language and their traditions, she said. The ones who remember, and the ones who actually traveled over here (in the 19th century) have passed away, she said. Vermonts Welsh pioneers dont get as much attention as some of their contemporaries do. Edwards said there are a few reasons for that.

Blabey When a group of people in Wales in the 1850s started to look around the world for a place where they could have more religious and political freedom, speak their native language, and escape from the forced influence of England, it is easy to see how they might have been attracted to Argentina, a country where the national drink of mate is just a strong version of tea, and the everyday dish of empanadas is so similar to the popular British Cornish pasty. Needless to say, Argentina at the time was also practicing a very open door policy towards immigrants, especially those who agreed to populate the empty expanses outside of Buenos Aires. So, in 1865, a group of about 150 Welsh people, mostly families, set out on the sailboat Mimosa , to establish a new life in Patagonia. They were led by Michael D. Jones, a man who supported equal voting for men and women and proposed to form the community in Patagonia on experimental democratic lines, including universal franchise. Over the next 20 years, the original settlers were joined by more Welsh groups from Wales and the United States, and they founded the four towns of Rawson, Gaiman, Trelew, and Puerto Madryn in the region previously unpopulated except for the native Indian groups.

An Englyn is beautiful in its brevity, exquisite in its diction, making remarkable use of alliteration. The poems themselves are often pointed and thought provoking. There are many forms of Englyn, but the most often used is known as Englyn unodl union. This is a form of thirty syllables arranged in lines of ten, six, seven and seven syllables. There is one end-rhyme, but in the first line one, two or three syllables layer the rhyming word, and are echoed in the first words of the second line. Cynghanedd (literally "harmony", where there is an internal alliteration - certain consonants are made to recur regularly within a line) is necessary. Cynghanedd is a complex system of interplay between vowels and consonants resulting in internal and end rhyme and complex alliteration.

Extractions: Rhondda Valleys Heritage - coal mining part of Welsh culture Trehafod, an integral part of Welsh industrial culture, is situated at the gateway to probably one of the most famous coal mining areas in history, the Rhondda Valleys. However before the influx of the industrial revolution the Rhondda Valleys and surrounding areas enjoyed a former pastoral tranquillity, with bubbling fresh water streams and heavy woodland. The village of Trehafod grew on the estate of the Morgan family in the area known as Hafod. Hafod is the name given to the area of land streaming from the great western colliery in Hopkinstown, to Porth, ancient entrance to 'The Holy City' of Dinas. The Hafod community would have consisted of the Morgan family, owner of the large Hafod Fawr estate, a number of smaller tenant farmers, craftsmen, a small group of labourers, servants, apprentices and shepherds. The community would have been self-sufficient, with their existence dependant on the traditional farming of sheep and some cattle. Hafod fawr (Doctor Morgan's), is the mansion at the east side of the river Rhondda and was home of the Morgan family. The whole of the Morgan estates were a game reserve and there were often as many as 20 guns on a shoot. These would have been attended by lords and nobility from all over the country. A dozen or so men were employed in the mansion grounds with twenty or thirty horses kept for use by the family and their many guests. It is documented that Miners Leader Mabon was a friend of the Morgan's and a frequent visitor to Hafod Fawr. The Mansion's tower overlook the Lewis Merthyr Colliery site and lands were several thousand workers would have been employed.
