Weightlifting and Powerlifting are VERY different sports, although the differences may not be obvious to the casual onlooker. The most obvious difference is that the two sports require the lifter to perform different lifts. A powerlifter performs three lifts in competition, which are the squat, bench press, and dead lift. Success in these lifts is all about raw strength. Weightlifting consists of just two different lifts in competition, these being the snatch and the clean and jerk . The final aim of each of these lifts is to pull a barbell from the floor to an overhead position with the arms fully extended in an explosive fashion. Where powerlifting is about strength, weightlifting is all about explosive power. The two lifts are very briefly described below. In the snatch, the bar is pulled from the floor to an overhead, arms extended position in one single, fluid movement. This lift lift requires not only explosive power but also very good technique, if heavy weights are to be lifted! The clean and jerk, as the name suggests, actually consists of two movements. In the first (the 'clean'), the bar is pulled from the floor up onto the front of the shoulders. The second movement (the jerk) is now performed. The bar is driven from the shoulders to an arms fully extended position overhead, by use of the legs. The lifter splits the legs in order to get his/her body uinder the bar.
