    Extractions: Kansas City has long been the center of many meteorological activities. Some of this has been due to its central location. Others factors include the unique work of government meteorologists early in the 20th century. Another factor was the superior communication facilities that surrounded Kansas City when it was a major rail hub. Much of this material is not well documented. Compiled by Allen Pearson and the WDAF FOX 4 Weather Department from several sources as noted in each section. SEVERE STORMS FORECASTING AND RESEARCH Joseph Galway (a longtime tornado and severe thunderstorm forecaster for the National Weather Service) became interested in a U.S. Army Signal Corps meteorologist, Lt. J.P. Finley. Much of this material is taken from Galway's 1992 paper "Early Severe Thunderstorm Forecasting and Research By the U.SD. Weather Bureau". In the United States minor networks for organized meteorological observations were established by the Land Office in 1817, and in 1819 by the Surgeon-General of the Army. The telegraph, invented in 1833 was made available to the public in 1845. In 1847 the Smithsonian Institution began a series of meteorological observations for solving the problems of storms. By 1860 there were 500 weather stations, but the Civil War cut into the program. In December 1873 Joseph Henry, director of the Smithsonian, petitioned the U.S. Army Signal Corps to assume the funding for the obser- vation program, which it did in 1874. The observations were rudimentary and little was done with the data in an operational fashion. In 1880 a "study room" was formed and in 1882 Lt. John P.

    Extractions: During WW2, Staff Sergeant Robert Dodson jumped into St. Mere Eglise on D-Day with the 82nd Airborne Division. He fought as an infantryman for days before returning to his primary job as a weather observer. Joe Motylewski performed two combat jumps with the 101st Airborne Division. First in France and then into Holland. Also during WW2, a few weathermen volunteered to work as part of the Special Intelligence (SI) section of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services). These men performed daring weather-gathering missions behind enemy lines. Major Chuck Hight was the commander of the OSS weathermen. He completed both British jump school in Palestine, and OSS operator training. He had the responsibility of chosing all the sites for infiltration of the teams, ensuring they were resupplied as necessary, and overseeing and decoding their transmitted messages. His account of the mission can be found by clicking on the "Yugoslavia Caper" hyperlink below: Staff Sergeant Joe Conaty and Captain Cecil Drew, OSS weathermen, jumped into Yugoslavia in 1944 to send weather intelligence data for resupply to Tito's Partisans.They later had to escape and evade for 12 days when the Germans dropped SS Fallschirmjager Battalion 500 on them to capture Tito and kill the members of the Allied weather team on the island of Vis, off the coast of Yugoslavia.     Extractions: Prior to and during the Vietnam War, Special Operations Weather personnel were assigned to the 1st Air Commando Wing. SSgt Hank Kelley was the first Combat Weatherman assigned to a Combat Control Team, and is pictured below. In 1965, elements of the 82nd Airborne Division and 7th Special Forces Group deployed to the Dominican Republic for Operation "Power Pack." Special Operations Weathermen such as Chuck Irby were there, too. Air Commando Combat Weather Team In SE Asia, Capt Keith Grimes and his Air Commando Weather Team members set up an indigenous weather net which assisted our bombing efforts in Vietnam. These men attended many of the same schools and operated alongside Combat Control Team (CCT) members who were there. Many times the weather guys had to go places no-one else could go, due to the significant enemy threat. They also worked as Forward Air Controllers (FACs), directly supporting one SE Asian country's efforts against the communists. Capt Grimes even briefed the Secretary of Defense on his teams activities in the country, some of which are still classified to this day.

My answer is always an indefinite one but always with a note of concern because I know of the history of this location. Hurricanes have hit Savannah in the past and will hit the area again in the future, I just cannot say when, but we must prepare ourselves for the times when they will. If we read a chapter out of the book of hurricanes that have hit the Georgia and southern South Carolina coast, we can get an idea of the threat that is imposed upon us. If you look at the history of hurricanes that have made landfall along the Georgia coast during the 1900's, you might ask yourself, "Why all the worry?" Only three storms have slammed into the coast in the past 97 years! Is there a need to be concerned? The answer is to read more of the book of mother nature. If this book has only three chapters, the 1900's was only chapter two. By reading this section of the book, indeed, a feeling of false security could easily befall on us. We need to read chapter one, "Hurricanes that have hit the Georgia and southern South Carolina Coast in the 1800's." This section of history will open your eyes!

In 1940 An Armistice Day storm raged across the Great Lakes Region and the Upper Midwest. A blizzard left 49 dead in Minnesota, and gales on Lake Michigan caused ship wrecks resulting in another 59 deaths. Up to 17 inches of snow fell in Iowa, and at Duluth MN the barometric pressure reached 28.66 inches. The blizzard claimed a total of 154 lives, and in Iowa, killed thousands of cattle. Whole towns were isolated by huge snowdrifts. In 1955 An early arctic outbreak set many November temperature records across Oregon and Washington. The severe cold damaged shrubs and fruit trees. Readings plunged to near zero in western Washington, and dipped to 19 degrees below zero in the eastern part of the state. In 1987 A deepening low pressure system brought heavy snow to the east central U.S. The Veteran's Day storm produced up to 17 inches of snow in the Washington D.C. area snarling traffic and closing schools and airports. Norfolk VA reported their earliest measurable snow in 99 years of records.
