This means that different freshwater ecosystems are isolated from each other often by large tracts of land. Due to the variation in the volume and quality of the water present in these ecosystems there tends to be less diversity in the variety of organisms living in the ecosystem when compared to marine environments. Freshwater ecosystems may be classified as either standing water (lakes, ponds and swamps) or running water (streams creeks, dams and rivers). Different communities tend to be adapted to the different environments in these ecosystems. Environment Characteristics Typical Organisms Rapid streams Rapid water flow makes a firm bottom. Rocks with crevices for protection of organisms Often shallow with good light penetration and high oxygen concentration.
