Extractions: All the world's great arrangers-most of whom got to work with Frank Sinatra (the rest wish they had)-are (or were) American. With one exception: Canadian-born Robert Farnon. At last report, Bob was still alive and well, and living at "La Falaise" on the Channel Island of Guernsey (a letter with only that address can reach him). Now 85, he still makes the occasional foray into London to do what he's always done best. Andre Previn, told the late, great lyricist Johnny Mercer that "Robert Farnon is the greatest living string arranger in the world." The great ones who admit to Farnon's influence have included Nelson Riddle, Don Costa, Quincy Jones, Neil Hefti, Torrie Zito and Johnny Mandel (just to name the best who worked with Frank Sinatra), plus, (among those who didn't, but wished they had) Henry Mancini, Roger Kellaway, and John ("Star Wars") Williams.

The last of the Stuarts, Anne marked her reign with the most significant event, the 1707 Act of Union with Scotland. She outlived all her children, leaving her throne without an heir. Upon the death of Anne, England looked for a Protestant prince to succeed her, and chose George of Hanover who reigned from 1714-1727. Chosen because he was the great-grandson of James I, the king spoke only German and spent as little time in England as possible. Beginning with this "distant cousin" to the throne, the reign of George I marked the beginning of the 174-year rule of the Hanoverians who preceded Victoria. George I left the running of the government to the English politicians and created the office of Prime Minister. Under the Hanoverians, the powers of Parliament were extended, and the constitutional monarchy developed into what it is today.

He was created third Duke of Gloucester at the coronation of his brother, Edward IV. Richard had three children: one each of an illegitimate son and daughter, and one son by his first wife, Anne Neville, widow of Henry IV's son Edward. Richard's reign gained an importance out of proportion to its length. He was the last of the Plantagenet dynasty, which had ruled England since 1154; he was the last English king to die on the battlefield; his death in 1485 is generally accepted between the medieval and modern ages in England; and he is credited with the responsibility for several murders: Henry VI, Henry's son Edward, his brother Clarence, and his nephews Edward and Richard. Richard's power was immense, and upon the death of Edward IV, he positioned himself to seize the throne from the young Edward V. He feared a continuance of internal feuding should Edward V, under the influence of his mother's Woodville relatives, remain on the throne (most of this feared conflict would have undoubtedly come from Richard). The old nobility, also fearful of a strengthened Woodville clan, assembled and declared the succession of Edward V as illegal, due to weak evidence suggesting that Edward IV's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was bigamous, thereby rendering his sons illegitimate and ineligible as heirs to the crown. Edward V and his younger brother, Richard of York, were imprisoned in the Tower of London, never to again emerge alive. Richard of Gloucester was crowned Richard III on July 6, 1483.

However, Richard's mother Anne Mortimer was great-granddaughter to Edward's second son, Lionel, Duke of Clarence; in this respect Richard's claim to the throne was stronger than Henry VI's own. Outside the court, noblemen built up private armies; a 'bastard feudalism' developed, in which service to one baron was the only protection against the others. These conditions both caused and permitted Richard of York's quarrel with Henry. Had Henry VI been competent, the Yorkist claim to the throne might never have been advanced - let alone that of Henry Tudor, the distant relation who eventually prevailed.
