Maj Gen Patrick Cordingley, who commanded the brigade - the renowned Desert Rats - in 1991, believes that Iraq poses no imminent threat to Britain or its interests and that "the case for war has not yet been made by the politicians". Gen Cordingley told The Telegraph: "I'm absolutely opposed to a war. I feel very strongly that it is wrong. There is no justification for sending British troops to Iraq." He doubted that the dossier of evidence against the Iraqi regime - to be released by Tony Blair on Tuesday - would prove the case for war. "I don't think they have much, frankly," he said. It is understood that Gen Cordingley also has grave concerns about the number of casualties that could result from having to fight all the way to Baghdad. Based on his forecast from 1991 that military casualties in a full-scale conflict could amount to 15 per cent, a suggested British and American invasion force of 250,000 troops could suffer more than 37,000 casualties.

Throughout the war, he built himself a very impressive war record and was regarded as one of the most able officers to enter the army from civilian life. Although unattached and unenlisted, Logan fought at Bull Run. When the Battle at Bull Run was finished, he went to Washington and resigned his seat in Congress. Then, upon returning to Illinois, Logan joined the Union army and raised a regiment of volunteers of which he was made colonel. This regiment was called the 31st Illinois or, as Logan referred to them, the "dirty-first." John Logan and the 31st were part of McClernand's brigade along with two other Illinois regiments. One of the first major battles that Logan and his men fought was the Battle of Belmont in Missouri. By nine o'clock on the morning of November 7, 1861, the Union troops were ashore three miles above Belmont, ready to march to the Confederate camp. McClernand's three regiments took the lead in the advance on Belmont. Logan's men, suffering terribly from the lowland humidity, threw off their overcoats. Following them, each regiment down the line did the same. When the clearing where the Confederates were camped was finally reached, the Confederates were already prepared for battle. With McClernand still in the lead, the Union soldiers filed across the field, the 27th Illinois on the far right, the 31st to its left and slightly out of line, and the 30th on the left of the formation. There was some delay before the fighting began because Logan momentarily refused to get into formation.

He was the oldest of Jesse Grant's and Hannah Simpson's six children. Ulysses was christened Hiram Ulysses Grant, but he later changed it to Ulysses Hiram Grant to avoid being teased about his initials, which would have spelled H.U.G. Grant attended West Point, graduating in 1843. Grant became engaged to the sister of a classmate. Their wedding was delayed due to the threat of the war with Mexico. In 1844 Grant took part in the war. In 1847 he participated in the capture of Mexico City, which won him praise and promotion for his bravery. He was made first lieutenant by the end of the war. Grant's experience would be helpful in his later military career. In 1852 Grant was stationed at Fort Vancouver. He did not take his family west because his army pay was too little. To Grant, Vancouver was a lonely place. Separated from his family, Grant became depressed and started drinking heavily. Several critics charged him with drinking, but there was no formal evidence. In 1853 Grant won promotion to captain and was transferred to Fort Humboldt in California. Soon after, Grant resigned from the army to live with his family in St. Louis. For the next six years Grant's life was difficult. Mrs. Grant's father gave her a farm near St. Louis. There Ulysses built a cabin that he called "Hardscrabble." The family lived on the farm from 1855 to 1858. Grant tried and liked farming, but he failed because crop prices were low and his health was poor. In 1859 Grant sold the farm and moved to St. Louis. There a relative gave him a job in a real estate office, but Grant could not collect rents. In 1860 Grant's father gave him a $50-a-month job as a clerk. Ulysses accepted, but showed no ability as a storekeeper.

The gunboats were stopped after a minor skirmish, so the infantry took the fort with ease. Grant was promoted to Major General after he took the fort. The Battle of Shiloh sent Grant’s reputation suffering. He lost a total of 1,754 men. After the battle he was known as "Butcher of Men." The battle of Vicksburg made Grant more widely known for not using traditional means of battle. He set up false battlefronts to confuse the Confederates. In October of 1863 Lincoln put Grant in command of all Union troops. Shortly after a major battle took place, The Battle of Chattanooga. Grant led his troops there to a major victory. After Chattanooga Lincoln had complete faith that he would win the war against the Confederacy. The Battle of Cold Harbor was a terrible loss for the Union and Grant. Grant was fighting a losing battle and kept retreating and coming back and losing more and more men trying to win. Grant suffered great losses and lost the battle. After three battles with no success, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, Grant moved his troops south of the James River to Petersburg. He decided to sieze Petersburg; the siege took the lives of 8,000 men and lasted nine months. One of Grant's strategies was to do the unexpected. Once he found where the Confederates were, instead of attacking them he would move around them. He would also divide his troops into three parts and attack from all sides.

CIVIL WAR GENERAL When it came to the business of war, Bryan Grimes, a Confederate major general from North Carolina in the War Between the States, was as lucky as he was capable. Battle after battle in such places as Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania and Gettysburg, he led charge after charge. Horses dropped beneath him, his knapsack was blown away by grapeshot and his coat was ripped by lead, but the enemy never drew a drop of his blood. Such were the discoveries of T. Harrell Allen, an East Carolina University professor, whose book, Lee's Last Major General: Bryan Grimes of North Carolina , was just released by Savas Publishing Co. and distributed by Stackpole Books. The story is about Grimes, a native North Carolinian from Pitt County, who, like so many young southern men in 1861, was a farmer until leaving home to become a soldier. In 1865, after four years as an officer, he returned to his plantation home at Grimesland (named after his grandfather) to become a successful planter and a benefactor to a struggling University of North Carolina. His potential as a state leader was enormous, but the role of statesman was not to be in his future. A character trait that made him stern and strict with a stubborn sense of duty may have prompted the blast from an assassin's shotgun that ended his life on a dark road near his home in 1880.
