5-0 out of 5 stars Very inclusive book
This book is perfect for someone who wants to make sure they are eating the correct vitamins and minerals. It lists the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids essential for making proteins. It lists which foods you can find these in, and what the specified vitamin/mineral does for the body. It is a very good reference book and I highly recommend it, especially for the beginner or for someone who has been wanting to eat a more healthy, complete diet, and they just don't know where to start. Although it does not include everything, it is a book that I will always turn to for a quick and easy reference. I think that everyone who is interested in improving the quality of their diet should consider gettig this book. It is laid out very straight forward, very well organized, very informative. Five Stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting information
This is an interesting view on looking at alternative medicine to improve one's overall health and well being. Not always Western medicine has all the options available and there are so many different vitamins, minerals and herbs this helps to look at what is out there. It does not include everything but it is a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & More
I subscribe to 3 naturopathic papers plus Consumer Reports 'On Health' for balance. This book does a very thorough job of pulling it all together in an easily read guide. I bought it to get a concise guideline for how much of each nutrient is needed for what purpose. It gives that along with precautions. Money well-spent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars About to become my "Bible" of nutrition
This review is of the fourth edition of THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL BOOK, 2007. There are lots of books in the market about vitamin and mineral supplementation but this one makes a better case than most that Americans, on the whole, should be taking a lot more vitamin and mineral supplements. For one thing, says author/researcher Shari Lieberman, the FDA's RDI's (until recently RDA's) are defensive measures designed to guard against certain diseases but not to enhance health. For instance, the suggested amount of B vitamins we need are calculated to keep beriberi, rickets and pellagra at bay, when many other health benefits accrue by taking more of these substances. For another, those usually minuscule RDI amounts are calculated for an imaginary genderless human being of about 160 lbs, truly a statistical straw person. Worse yet, the quality of the food we Americans eat is steadily eroding under the impact of over-processing, fast food, and soils weakened by generations of chemical (nitrogen-based) fertilizers.

So basically the author dispenses with the "common wisdom" along the lines of "Eat a good balanced diet every day and if you like, take a multivitamin-mineral supplement." Lieberman patiently discusses the role of every vitamin of human use and most of the minerals. This book held a lot of surprises for me. Did you know that Niacin (Vitamin B3) can help lower blood cholesterol? It is even called the "best-kept secret in American medicine," especially when so many people are taking vastly more expensive statins to lower their LDL's. (Many people take both Niacin and statins, and shrug and smile when the doctor credits only the precription drug for any improvement in blood cholesterol.) And men -- before you go to the doctor with complaints of a swollen prostate gland (which may be "BPH", benign prostate hypoplagia), try getting more zinc into your diet.

What I like most about THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL BOOK is its intellectually honesty. Lieberman backs up her advocacy by discussing the most recent and relevant studies of vitamins and minerals. Usually her suggested doses of vitamins and minerals are many times the government's straw-man RDI amounts, but really you have to read this book. Someimes the amounts of supplementation for a particular substance is about the same or a little more than the government recommends; and in at least one case I can think of (phosphorus), she recommends no supplementation at all; i.e., nothing compared to the FDA's RDI of a small dose.

So the reader has to pay attention -- gorging on multivitamins, B-complex vitamins and fish oil may do us more harm than good. Also, frequently, the form in which a nutrient gets to us is key. To help reduce cholesterol Vitamin B3 (Niacin) has shown to be helpful, but it needs to be taken in the form of "straight" Niacin, not the Niacinamide that usually winds up in multivitamin or B-complex pills. But ingesting the straight Niacin can lead to a flushing effect -- to counter that, it is necessary to take an aspirin half an hour before taking the straight Niacin (an easy habit for those of us who practice "daily vitamin therapy" of a small aspirin tablet each morning), OR to pay extra for "flush-free" Niacin. This book is packed with such helpful strategies and approaches, which make good common sense and are based on scientific data.

In fact, THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL GUIDE has quickly become my "go-to" book about the benefits of the various nutrients discussed in them (there are also a few herbals the author discusses and approves of). If the recommendations in this book continue to work for me as well as they have for the past several months of implementation, it may well become my "bible" of greater health. Highly recommended. This book has a history of slipping in and out of print, so don't be afraid to go for a good used copy as long as it is fairly recent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Service
The vendor was very professional and sent the item right away. The book is a good, current addition for our library. Our previous book on the same topic was about 25 years old and suggested dosages have changes. Thus, our need for a newer book.We are both Complementary Health Practitioners.I hope this gets recorded to the seller's credit

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Anyone!
My first exposure to The Real Vitamin & Mineral Book was the previous edition as a textbook in nutrition college.

It is one of only two books that I found to be invaluable enough from my school days to buy the new edition when it became available.

This edition is as clearly written and well researched as the previous editions, with the added bonus of updated information.

As a holistic health consultant I still think it is important to seek professional advice before you start making changes to your wellness plan, but this book will help you to understand what supplements truly can and cannot do.

Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Vitamin & Minerals that I have read in a long time.
I thought I pretty much knew all I needed to know about Vitamin and Minerals; I was wrong. This is the best book I have read on the subject in a long time. The author is so detailed on each vitamin that when you go to purchase them you know exactly what they should contain.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get the most for their money when buying vitamins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book There is On Supplements
This is the best book there is on nutritional supplements, and well-documented to boot.Buy one for yourself and give one to your doctor and any other health professionals you work with who have not caught on to the real power of nutritional medicine. This healing modality can no longer be tossed aside, as the 100 pages of research summaries in the back of the book show.I teach nutrition to physicians, and if there is one popular press book I insist they all read, this is it.Superb. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Evidence-Based Approach to Vitamins and Minerals
Books quickly arrived in excellent condition. Very fast service!! I highly recommend this seller! Book gives very detailed information about vitamins and minerals and reactions with other medications, symptoms of deficiency or toxicity. Very well written and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for doctor's office and for fireplace reading
This book is under the banner of the famed Linus Pauling Institute (Oregon State University) has it has a great foreword by Bruce Ames. Linus Pauling was one of the best thinkers of the last century and he recommended much higher than RDA / Daily Value intakes from a multi-vitamin as well as some other supplements in order to help procure optimal health.

There is no science yet to suggest that Pauling was wrong about such high dose supplementation --for example to lower blood-toxin homocysteine, the most likely cause of most heart disease, some cancers and Alzheimer's disease. However, the medical world is slow embracing the evidence supporting this approach but that is changing.

This book is an important and tightly edited work that will help practicing physicians and interested lay people with factual data, pointers and references and even the most knowledgeable person will surely pick up important health information they would otherwise have missed.

This is a well organized handbook with 27 chapters for the individual vitamins and minerals and their effects, sources and therapeutic indications and drug interactions.

This book has "Tolerable Upper Levels" tables to satisfy even the most conservative physician but it must be said that this heading represents a level that prevents the most uncommon or even trivial interactions, and a level that may well be much below "Optimal Levels" as suggested by Pauling, and which are likely to promote health in the great majority of people.

The book would benefit from a "Pauling Proposed Probable Optimal Levels in Most" table and from the inclusion of chapters for what used to be named vitamin F, with the F from "Fat", i.e. the essential omega-3 and omega-6 oils, think of them as vitamins F-3 and F-6. Present intakes of omega-3s are well below adequate levels while omega-6 (linoleic acid from most vegetable oils) may well represent our most common "vitamin overdose".

The challenge of the new nutrition is figuring out the "Long-Latency Deficiency Diseases", LLDD's if you wish, caused by the insufficient intakes over time of one or several nutrients, from vitamin D and calcium for bone health, to the homocysteine-lowering trio of folic acid, B6 and B12 for heart and other diseases.

This book builds a solid foundation with what is known, it is without technical errors and it is clearly presented. Vital in a doctor's office and much recommended for the interested lay person. ..... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This is a comprehensive guide to vitamins, minerals and herbs. It also gives vitamin/mineral/herbal remedies for sicknesses and diseases. Some diseases are a result of vitamin and mineral deficiency and this book could very well help people get off of some medications and choose a natural remedy, but of course, under the supervision of a doctor! That's one of the other things I love about this book. It's written by a doctor. There's a lot of valuable information in here and I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking natural remedies for their ailments.

4-0 out of 5 stars good place to start
Arrived as promised, new.I have the previous edition as well, this one has an additional section on herbs, not extensive but a start.Since my view is that one gets sick because one's system is "out of whack" in some way, this gives a guide to some of the things that could contributing, or at least slowing healing for a collection of illnesses. There is also a good discussion for people who have the inherited possibility of diabetes type II and/or obseity which, while not the recent "method of treatment" (stomach stapling), it DOES describe the treatment that worked for my father, and reasons in line with known biological information.Weight control is her area of expertice, which goes hand in hand with the diabetes.I have had good luck with the advice I have found here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Red Flags Going Off
A rule of thumb that I've learned is always be skeptical when, on the cover of the book, the author's name is accompanied by credentials (In this case, "D.C., Ph.D, C.C."). It's designed to make you instantly trust the author before opening the book, to think, "Well, he's a doctor with that Ph.D, so I'll just trust him." That's one.

Second red flag, he's a chiropractor. See, chiropractors, for the most part, do a lot of the same physical therapy that a real Physical Therapist MD does, except that the PT has to actually pass a regulated exam to get his license to practice. A chiropractor does NOT have to do any exams (not any officially government regulated ones, anyways) - he can practice a modern medicine without a license, basically. Wikipedia lists chiropractic as an "alternative medicine", which ought to tell you something.

Third is that Sheila Buff, the co-author, has no credentials. It just says she's a freelance writer that "specializes" in various things that sound fancy. In the end, it doesn't matter, because she quite simply has no listed credentials. Everyone is technically a freelance author by definition - heck, I am just for writing this review.

Fourth is that it has a forward by Gary Null. That should really say enough by itself, but assuming most don't know who it is, he's a well-known promoter of "natural/alternative medicine". He's been heavily criticized for being plain wrong, even from the James Randi Educational Foundation, which is a damn reputable organization. Basically, if the JREF says something is BS, then it's BS. Period.

So, right off the bat, with all these introductions, I can't help but to be completely on edge when reading the first page, where it talks about the importance of vitamins and minerals. Keeps your bones strong, that sounds good, keeps your eyes working, sounds good, keeps your brain working, sounds good, among other things. And then it says, "MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, you need them to protect yourself from cancer and heart disease." Wow, so cancer and heart disease is more important than being able to see, think or having strong bones to walk with, lift with and do normal everyday things? Even if I had cancer or heart disease, I'd at least be able to *live*, but apparently the author thinks it's better to be (quite fittingly) a vegetable than to have free will.

This book may have actual usefulness in terms of the chemical activities of vitamins and minerals, which is why I checked it out. I really want to know about food. When I look at a nutrition box, all I know is that eating tons of sodium is bad, cholesterol is bad, eating tons of fat makes you fat, so don't eat so damn much fat, always look at the "servings per package" text before eating an entire item and that the more protein, fiber and 100% signs (or as high as you can obtain for a specific vitamin or mineral) means that it's a measure of how healthy something is (see a nutrition panel of Total). But I don't know what any of those vitamins DO. What the heck does Vitamin B do? What the heck does Vitamin C, D and anything else do? Magnesium? All I know is eating the stuff is good, but I don't know what the chemical reactions with the body is exactly and this book hardly helps. I couldn't bring myself to read it because of the glaring red flags. I flipped through the pages and got to the alcohol bits. Abusing alcohol can prevent you from absorbing vital nutrients - that's probably true, I've heard that somewhere before, but drinking alcohol in proper doses, small quantities, has been medically proven to be IMMENSELY healthy, particularly red wine, which I don't remember the author mentioning. Also, all he said was it "blocks" you from absorbing vitamins. He may have mentioned it elsewhere, but for where I looked, he didn't explain why or how it blocks, just that it blocks. That's too vague.

For all I know, this book might contain scientifically and medically correct statements about food, but I just can't force myself to read a book that's very clearly founded on BS. This book is part of the recent trend in the last couple decades in America that are trying to sell garbage for easy money by banking in on all the paranoid fat Americans who want some help.

Look, if you're worried about your health and maybe even want to lose weight, don't eat trash. Don't eat candy or sweets, like cake and donuts, all the time. Don't eat pizza or fast food much, if any. Don't eat heavy meat, like beef and pork (mainly bacon and sausage, pork chops are actually okay). Eat lighter meats, like poultry and seafood (fish, shrimp, etc). Eat fruit and vegetables; I find fruit cups sold at Wal-Mart for about two bucks for four cups to be pretty tasty and adequately healthy. Corn, green beans and rice are all fairly cheap vegetables. Don't listen to the huge trend going around where everyone is suddenly saying corn is bad for you (particularly corn syrup, which is a pretty controversial topic, but I'm on the side that assumes it's not really bad, or at least not significantly bad, for you). I may not know much about the chemical or medical facts on food, but I'm not overweight and I'm very happy with my body. I'm not sick constantly and I don't feel like crap 24/7, so I assume that I'm decently healthy just from trying to eat what I assumed was an all-round daily meal (or at least I try to do so without inconveniencing myself. I admit I eat way too much ramen, but it's just such a sweet meal to have when you're watching anime - yeah, I'm a nerd). The truth is, if you really want help eating right, ask a doctor. Medical doctors know a lot about nutrition, it's their job. Anyone into alternative medicine will say that they don't, but everyone who gets a REAL medical degree has to take things like organic chemistry and microbiology as required courses, and of course it'd make sense for them to know about food to be able to identify illnesses. The people who say that MDs don't know about food are the same people who get high blood pressure and diabetes pills from those same doctors they speak so badly about, both of which are illnesses that could have been avoided if you had listened to what they said about food in the first place.

You don't need this book or any food book. You need to simply ask your doctor, "What do you think would be good to eat in an average week?"

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-written and always clear "vitamin bible".
I bought this book with the intention to better understand vitamins, but also the concern that a book on this subject could be undeniably boring, with the risk to end-up unread on a bookshelf. I instead, to my great surprise, I finished reading it no-time, with the pleasure and interest normally reserved to spy stories.
Extremely clear, if you are really keen on this subject, it is a real eye-opener that can change the way you look at food and health, though the risk is that you may want to start taking all your A, B's, C, D, E, K vitamins plus various minerals in the vane attempt to achieve immortality.
I have to say this is the first book I have read on this subject and I deem it an excellent one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!
AWESOME book. I have been buying books, CD's, videos since amazon.com first came on line...and this is the 1st time I felt compelled to write a review. I owned a copy of Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible, but I was looking for more. I take about 9 vitamins a day & this book answered ALL of my questions and then some. I keep it at work & use it almost daily. I like the way you can find everything very quickly. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a lot of info.in one place.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference even though not up to date
I recently borrowed this book from the library. It is stock full of information, vitamins, minerals, herbs, symptoms, a little of everything. I especially liked the full explaination of vitamins and their attributes. The only thing bad about this book is that it isn't up to date with all the new herbs out on the market or new diseases and afflictions.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable, comprehensive, "user friendly" reference.
Do you need food supplements? If so, which ones? And how much?Nicola Reavley answers these questions and many more in The New Encyclopedia OfVitamins, Minerals, Supplements, & Herbs. Reavley points out thatwe're all different, and not everyone needs supplements. She emphasizesthat supplements don't make up for a poor diet.Peo0le need first to have"a good understanding of the roles played by vitamins and minerals inhealth and disease."Then they need to understand how supplements are"affected by your age, sex, state of health, and lifestyle. Certainsupplements can be harmful to certain people."She starts with ageneral description of vitamins and minerals and their roles in the humanbody. She explains how the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) arecalculated and how to determine if those are adequate for your individualneeds. With this, she includes a discussion of what constitutes a goodbasic diet.In some instances, people can get all the nutrients they needfrom their diet, and don't need to take supplements. The bulk of the bookis devoted to an in-depth discussion of each vitamin, mineral, herb, andother nutrients.Other nutrients include substances like melatonin, sharkcartilage, and coenzyme Q10.She starts each discussion with a "QuickGuide" which summarizes what the supplement does in the body, sources,RDA, interactions, and cautions. She then provides a complete informationabout that supplement. The final section of the book is a listing ofcommon health problems, such as asthma, insomnia, and osteoporosis, withinformation on the causes and treatments for each. She describes the roleof diet and nutritional supplements in preventing and treating thosediseases. A glossary provides definitions of terms used in the book, and an extensive reference section enables readers to do their own researchif they so desire.Reavley says that "as diet has a huge role toplay in the prevention of disease, eating well and consuming adequateamounts of vitamins and minerals are vital for both present and futurehealth."She wrote The Complete Encyclopedia Of Vitamins, Mineral,Supplements, & Herbs to provide the "necessary knowledge to makeinformed choices about the food you eat and the supplements you take." Readers will find that she has met her goal.

My mother recommended this book to me and I use it often. Very good!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and unique, but needs updating
The supplement industry moves at light speed at introducing new products, so the fact that this book is six years old is somewhat of a hindrance. However, that being said, it has a unique medical perspective on just about every vitamin, herb, and mineral you could think of.

Each supplement included in the book includes short sections starting with "Basic Information" that shows foods that include the supplement, if any exist. Also there are sections on known effects (studied and proven), possible additional effects (proven via anecdotal evidence), warnings and precautions, and notes for those who are breastfeeding, infants and children, and senior citizens. There is also information on storage, safe dosage, toxicity, and adverse reactions.

This book is written by an M.D., so it does seem a bit overly cautious at times, but in the age of the Internet with so many snake oil salesmen claiming they have the cure for everything from Alzheimer's to diabetes in a nutritional supplement, I find this voice of caution refreshing. I consider this book just one more weapon in my arsenal of nutritional knowledge.

I also recommend the book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing". That book focuses on specific illnesses, while this book focuses on the herbal remedies and nutritional supplements mentioned in that book. They definitely make good companion reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
Hello, I am a sincere student of health and nutrition. I read Vitamins and Minerals Demystified, learned the information, and passed all the quizzes and final exam. This is not a fluffy book. The book gave me a much more in-depth understanding of vital nutrients - much more than Nutrition Almanac or many other "Vitamin" books. There are charts, graphs, molecular diagram cartoons showingtransport systems and the sequence of nutrient assimilation in the body. Wow! And yet, this was all outlined in an easy-to-use format so I was not daunted by the information. Thank you for the Best book on the market in the subject of Vitamins and Minerals in human nutrition.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
This book is so informative! It is sometimes very technical but also describes the processes in lay terms. It tells you how your body breaks down and uses specific vitamins. This is a great book for those who want to understand how the body works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what it's supposed to be
It is just what it's explained on the cover page. Every vitamin and mineral is described from the following points of view:
- how it works in the human body
- why we need it
- how much of it we need it
- where to find it
- what happens if we lack it
This book is what I was looking for. I am someone who seeks health, not a professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Great
This is a really great book.Direct and to the point without a lot of fluff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I am extremely pleased with all this book has to offer. It's very informative and has research to back it up.A very good buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it was going to be
It was very hard to read I'm not a Doctor and I guess I thought it was going to just tell me what I should be taking, but if I follow all of this info i would be on so many vitamins i wouldn't have to eat Breakfast I would just eat a hand full of vitamins.
I do look up info and it does give me some answers I can put into use I just wishedthey would have written it for someone who is not up on her vitamins and minerals

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information...
This book has great information about all types of minerals and vitamins.I had a hard time putting the book down.I learned so much more about the minerals and vitamins and what doses you should be using. Now I know how much my body needs of certain vitamins.

3-0 out of 5 stars Careful - this book isn't as neutral as the author claims it to be
If you read this book you will be given lots of evidence and independent studies on the various benefits of vitamins and minerals. But while this book claims to be neutral and balanced on the good and bad of each vitamin, the author does leave out a variety of studies that have cast doubt on the benefits of "mega-doses" of various vitamins and minerals.

For instance various recent studies on Vitamin E supplementation have shown no or negative correlation to heart disease.Several studies have even shown an increased mortality rate for people taking high doess of antioxidents (which are thought to do the opposite).A recent article in the Wall Street Journal highlighted some of these growing concerns (search on "the case against vitamins" for that article or "dangers of vitamins" for a variety of articles.)

I'm not an expert, in fact one of the reasons I bought this book was because I am confused on what to take and not to take and this seemed to be an impartial book. All I would suggest is that this book very much recommends taking vitamins at doses much higher than the recommended daily allowances (RDI), and before you take this book as the latest and best info and start a regiment of 15 pills a day, make sure you really do talk to your doctor or at least look at the contradictary studies now available online. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Old Student
Card was a good purchase, had to brush up on Nutrition for class and this was very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy reference covering many vitamins
There is a lot to learn about vitamins and minerals, and opinions vary widely depending on who you ask. The Quick Study guide to vitamins and minerals is a good place to start your search for information.Three authors crammed a ton of information onto four sides of a page. With small print, they cover a lot of ground.

The guide contains three sections. The first section gives you what conditions a particular vitamin is good for, the signs of deficiency, normal dosage, typical sources, and toxicity symptoms. The next section gives suggestions for dealing with various conditions such as cardiovascular or gastrointestinal. And the last section gives details about interactions between vitamins, minerals, and prescription medicines.

I like that the guide is fairly detailed and comprehensive. It seems well laid-out and is visually appealing

Dislikes: It is so brief it's hard to get meaningful information out of it. For example, I know there are studies that show that selenium is associated with a reduced cancer incidence, and they do mention this briefly in passing, but to get a good understanding requires far more than this guide can provide. Also, the guide does not stay up to date; some of the recommendations are too low (like vitamin D) and others are too high (like vitamin A). For vitamin K they don't differentiate between K1 and K2, and they overlook many important benefits. They say a deficiency is rare except in newborns but I feel that is misleading advice.Nowhere do they say vegetarians ought to supplement with vitamin B12. Where is Coenzyme Q10?Resveratrol?Curcumin?Omega 3 fats? The list of quirks, flaws, and omissions is maddening.

But you have to start somewhere. For those who don't want to read a book or subscribe to Life Extension Magazine, this 4-page summary is a reasonable start. If you think of it as an invitation to explore further it's well worth the modest price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great chart, but contains error &needs a revision
I am thankful for this well-formatted list.Although it does not include all important details, it does provide a brief "at-a-glance" reference for the vitamin and mineral sources along with their deficiency and toxicity symptoms, suggested dosages, therapeutic recommendations, and even a few drug interaction alerts. It is a bi-fold, four page chart, with more lists than I expected. It is definitely worth the cost.
However, an ERROR is under the POTASSIUM deficiency sympotoms. It states DECREASED blood pressure and it should be ELEVATED BLOOD PRESSURE. This is incredibly important! Often a person with hypertension has a sodium/potassium imbalance. However, instead of the doctor trying potassium therapy on the patient, the doctor will prescribe a blood pressure medication which also acts as a diuretic, further depleting the patient of more potassium and making the problem worse. The human body, with it's original diet consisting of potassium enriched foods and very little sodium, was designed to retain the sodium and to eliminate the potassium. With our canned and proccessed foods, humans now consume far too much sodium and this imbalance is very common.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT REVISION is needed: Under "High Blood Pressure", potassium should be added, and at the top of the list for the aformentioned reasons.

Product Description

With processed foods and commercially-farmed produce offering us less and less essential nutrition these days, people are taking a greater interest in their diet as a way to stay healthy and cope with illness and everyday stress. As a result the market is swamped with health claims for every kind of food and a profusion of health supplements, each one claiming wonder properties. Now in its fifth edition with many new entries and updated information in existing entries, Nutrients A-Z is an easy-to-use dictionary of every food, herb, vitamin, mineral, or supplement you might encounter, from bananas and carrots, olive oil and yogurt (the oldest natural medicines), to blueberries, guarana, and St. John’s Wort. Each entry gives a definition in plain language: what it is and where it comes from; the form it takes; how to prepare or enjoy it; its medicinal and health benefits; and recommended daily dose. In addition, any other key terms or nutrients that are mentioned within the entries are marked in bold to let the reader know that there is a separate entry on that subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars PRACTICAL QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE
Too many people focus on nutrition only when they are feeling run down or ill. To maintain good health at all times, one needs to pay constant attention to the fuel that you provide to your body. The immune system relies on what we eat for the essential nutrients that it needs to combat illness. Good health is a strategy that everybody ought to employ to prevent illness and provide the body with the resources to protect itself.

This is an excellent quick reference guide to find your way amongst all the food and health products and the profusion of supplements available these days. Each entry provides a definition in plain language, i.e. what it is, where it comes from, the form it takes, how to prepare or take it, the medicinal and health benefits and the recommended daily use.

Not only foodstuffs are discussed, as the entries include related matters such as for example the acid-alkaline balance, allergy, antibiotics etc. The entries run from acacia to zinc. The book includes a list of helpful addresses and herbal suppliers in Australia, the UK and the USA and concludes with an index. I also recommend The A o Z Guide To Supplements by Phyllis A Balch and Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars BOOK-THE PILLBOOK GUIDE TONATURAL MEDICINE
This book is the most exellent source of health information I have ever come across--- WITHOUT PRESCRIPTION DRUG USE WHICH ARE SO FREQUENTLY DANGEROUS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Reference Book
This book is the best I've ever found for the reference of natural medicines. It covers ailments, the conventional medicines prescribed most often, and the herbal or natural equivalent and its effectiveness and safety rating. I've bought several of these books for friends, and have steered many other people towards it. It should be a must for every bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, Helpful, Helpful!
That about sums this book up. I've referred to it so many times when myself or someone in my family is suffering from a slight case of something or other, but we don't feel like blasting ourselves with over-the-counter medications designed for a slew of other symptoms.

It provides a helpful grading system on how effective and how safe a product is when dealing with a specific illness/symptom.It's just a great book for someone who is interested in supplements & natural remedies but aren't sure where to start.A major upgrade from the kid working at the vitamin store in the mall!

This book is a must read for all people, not just African Americans. Understanding that there are definately minor physiological/genetic differences among ethnic groups is critical to receiving and providing healthy treatment for disorders. Knowing what vitamins and minerals are key to human development gives the reader an informed perspective on how to change diet to increase the standard of living. The author has made a solid effort to inform the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vitamins & Minerals from A to Z
This is a wonderful book that details a medical perspective of differences between Africans and Caucasians and will point you in the right direction toward health. It is fantastic to read a book written by someone who hashad the "benefit" of western training and realizes the gaps in"knowledge" in that system.

Dr. Jewel Pookrum does amarvelous job of chronicling chemical reactions, differences that aremelanin-related and opens the doors to a deeper understanding of health. This is information that we as a people, MUST grasp before the human genomebiological apocalypse is released.
